Abstract

Special Education Schools (SLB) are formal educational institutions that provide services for students with special needs. Until now, SLB still faces significant challenges related to safety in the school environment. To overcome these challenges, mentoring activities are needed to increase safety capacity for teachers, staff and security officers at the Semarang City State SLB. This community service activity uses a participatory approach and is carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation and evaluation. Initial observations showed various problems such as inappropriate evacuation routes, invisible meeting points and expired fire extinguishers. Through mentoring and training activities that combine lecture, discussion and practice methods, participants experienced a 37% increase in knowledge. The evaluation results showed increased participants' knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of implementing safety in schools. This program is expected to be a model for strengthening safety capacity in SLB and encouraging a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Abstract

Unbalanced population growth caused by high birth rates, low mortality, and uneven population distribution poses various challenges. One of the impacts is the increasing number of workers who choose to work abroad. In 2024, there will be 297,434 Indonesian Citizens working as Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI), with the most placements in Hong Kong (99,773), Taiwan (84,581), and Malaysia (51,732). PMI contributes significantly to the national economy through foreign exchange reserves. However, some of them also face various unfair treatment, such as low wages, violence, confiscation of documents, excessive working hours, and an inadequate work environment, in addition to many complaints related to illness, work accidents, and death. The literature review results related to PMI in Hong Kong show that PMIs still face problems related to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). With a lack of awareness about OSH rights, this condition will worsen. Therefore, there is a need for intervention in safety awareness training to increase workers' understanding and awareness of OSH. This training aims to improve workers' knowledge to reduce the number of work accidents and increase productivity. The results of the qualitative analysis showed that training increased participants' knowledge; therefore, PMI needed to conduct refresher training regularly to improve their safety awareness.

Abstract

Digitalization of Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) governance is an urgent need to address the challenges of transparency, accountability, and professionalism in village economic management. The Sumber Kamulyan BUMDes, which manages the Umbul Pelem tourist destination in Wunut Village, still faces obstacles in manual administrative records, the lack of an integrated data management system, and a suboptimal digital branding strategy. This study aims to develop the Wunut BUMDes Information System (SIBUMDes Wunut) as an effort to modernize administrative governance while strengthening the digital branding of the tourism village. The method used is Business Model Canvas analysis to formulate institutional and business strategies, and the application of the Waterfall Model in the system development process, which includes the stages of analysis, design, implementation, and testing. System testing was conducted using blackbox testing to ensure functional suitability. The results show that all key features, such as tourist data management, financial transaction recording, statistical report preparation, and social media content management, can function properly. These findings confirm that SIBUMDes Wunut not only improves administrative order but also serves as a sustainable digital promotion instrument. Thus, this system is declared feasible to be implemented and has the potential to be replicated by other villages as a model for BUMDes digitalization in order to encourage local economic independence.

Abstract

Translation techniques play a crucial role in ensuring that meaning is conveyed accurately and naturally across languages, particularly in dialogue-driven texts such as webtoons. However, previous studies on webtoon translation have predominantly focused on specific linguistic or cultural aspects, with limited attention to the overall distribution of translation techniques in English-to-Indonesian contexts. This study aims to identify the types of translation techniques and analyze their frequency in selected chapters of Serena by Jeong Ina, based on the framework proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). Using a descriptive qualitative design with quantitative support, 474 data units were analyzed from the English and Indonesian versions. The findings indicate that modulation is the most dominant technique, followed by amplification, reduction, and established equivalent. These results suggest that the translator prioritizes naturalness, clarity, and readability. Overall, the selection of translation techniques is influenced by the communicative demands of webtoons as multimodal and dialogue-based medium.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has normalized digital translation in higher education, yet its integration into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pedagogy remains complicated by an institutional vacuum. Grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model and Cognitive Load Theory, this study examines university students’ multi-tool strategies and critical engagement with Neural Machine Translation (NMT) and Generative AI (GenAI) platforms. Employing a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, quantitative data were gathered from 165 EFL undergraduates (73.7% female, 72.2% sophomores, 61.1% daily active users) via questionnaires, alongside semi-structured interviews with a purposive sub-sample (n=10).The findings reveal an advanced ecosystem characterized by functional differentiation: students strategically leverage specialized NMT engines like DeepL (38.9%) for academic precision but pivot to GenAI tools like ChatGPT (38.9%) for iterative conversational support. While students report high perceived usefulness (98.8%) and ease of use (96.1%) to minimize extraneous cognitive load, they reject passive consumption. Instead, 94.8% actively engage in critical post-editing due to systemic accuracy limitations regarding cultural nuances. Ethically, although 94.7% view automated assistance as an acceptable cognitive scaffold, the absence of clear institutional rules fosters a transparency gap, causing disclosure anxiety. This study dismantles the traditional narrative of student passivity and argues that higher education must move away from obsolete restrictions toward a framework of guided integration and structured translation literacy.

Abstract

Social media allows people to interact with others worldwide without face-to-face communication, creating opportunities for language learning through authentic online interaction. While previous studies have extensively examined language learning through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, limited research has specifically explored how interactions on X (formerly Twitter) contribute to language acquisition, particularly from the perspectives of Indonesian EFL learners. This study aimed to explore Indonesian EFL learners’ perceptions of how Twitter interaction supports their language acquisition. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study involved 30 university students from different universities in Indonesia. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that learners perceived Twitter as a valuable platform for language acquisition. Through interaction on Twitter, learners improved their English proficiency, expanded their vocabulary, enhanced their exposure to authentic language use, and increased their confidence in communicating in English. Furthermore, Twitter features such as real-time interaction, discussion threads, and access to native speakers played significant roles in supporting learning. The study concludes that Twitter interaction facilitates language acquisition by providing meaningful exposure to authentic English communication and opportunities for active engagement with global users.
