Abstract

This study looks at how verbs are translated from English to Indonesian in the iPhone 13 Pro Max user guide, and how the translation techniques used affect how acceptable the translations are to Indonesian readers. While many studies have looked at translating technical texts, not many have focused on verbs or how they affect users’ understanding. This study fills that gap by focusing on verbs, which are important in user guides because they give instructions that need to be clear and easy to follow. The study uses a qualitative method, applying Molina and Albir’s (2002) framework to identify the translation techniques, and Nababan’s (2012) model to measure how acceptable the translations are. Five Indonesian iPhone users were asked to rate how natural and clear the translated verbs were using a three-point scale. The results show that established equivalent was the most commonly used technique and had the highest acceptability. Other techniques such as linguistic compression, compensation, transposition, and modulation were used less often but were still mostly acceptable. By connecting translation techniques to user feedback, this study offers a focused and user-centered contribution to translation studies. It also gives useful insights for translators and user guide developers who want to make their translations clearer, more culturally appropriate, and easier to understand.

Abstract

This research examines the evaluation of attitudes in 5 articles from Jakartapost.com regarding the electoral debate of presidential candidates. As a mass media outlet targeting readers both domestically and internationally, Jakartapost.com is required to maintain neutrality in reporting on presidential debates. Therefore, the research aims to understand the attitudes and political ideology of 2024 Indonesian presidential candidates reported by Jakartapost.com. The news was analyzed using the appraisal system proposed by Martin and White (2005), categorizing attitudes into affect, judgment, and appreciation. This research utilized qualitative methods with embedded case study and Spradley’s analysis to identify cultural patterns and themes within the data. The results showed that attitudes consisted of 39.7% negative and 24.6% positive judgments, 16.4% negative and 8.2% positive appreciations, and 9.6% negative and 1.4% positive affects. The appraisal system can identify political ideologies of the three presidential candidates. Anis Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo express conflicting attitudes towards the current government, indicating their role as opposition and socialist populism, while Prabowo Subianto aligns himself with the current government known as technocratic populism. Journalists tend to assess Prabowo more positively compared to other candidates, suggesting a bias towards supporting him in the 2024 election.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explore and analyze the types and interpretations of metaphors found in songs from Jungkook’s Golden album. The analysis focuses on selected tracks including ‘3D’, ‘Seven - Explicit Version’, ‘Yes or No’, ‘Please Don’t Change’, ‘Somebody’, ‘Shot Glass of Tears’, ‘Closer to You’, ‘Standing Next to You’, ‘Hate You’, and ‘Too Sad to Dance’. Employing a qualitative research method, the study utilizes I.A. Richards’ (1936) framework to classify metaphor types and draws on the theories of Wittgenstein (2002) for interpreting metaphorical meanings. A total of ninety metaphorical expressions were identified, consisting of fifty-six living metaphors and thirty-four dead metaphors. Living metaphors were more frequently encountered, while dead metaphors appeared less often. The analysis reveals that living metaphors, due to their novelty and the introduction of unfamiliar expressions, tend to require deeper interpretation. In contrast, dead metaphors are more easily understood, as their repeated use over time has led to more conventional and simplified meanings.

Abstract

This study examines the application of code-switching by a tutor in the context of English language instruction within a language course. It aims to classify the varieties of code-switching evident in the tutor's statements and elucidate their communicative roles during the instructional process. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing data obtained from direct classroom observation and video recordings. A qualitative methodology, utilizing classroom observation and video documentation, was implemented. We looked at the data by putting different types and functions of code-switching into groups based on well-known theoretical frameworks. The findings indicate that the tutor utilized two forms of code-switching: inter-sentential switching, which involves switching between sentences, and intra-sentential switching, which involves switching within a sentence. The most common type was switching between sentences. The study also found that code-switching has four main purposes: changing the topic, affecting the mood, repeating something, and socializing. Among these, the topic switch function was used the most often. These results indicate that code-switching is a beneficial communication technique in English language instruction, facilitating classroom interaction and augmenting student comprehension.
