Abstract

Globalization is a multidimensional phenomenon that not only includes economic aspects, but also social, cultural, and political dimensions. Anthony Giddens, as a leading sociologist, made an important contribution to understanding globalization through the concept of global interconnectedness rooted in modernity. This article aims to analyze the concept of globalization according to Giddens, specifically through the framework of time-space distancing, interdependence, and global–local dialectics, and examine its relevance in the context of Muslim society. This study uses a qualitative approach through a literature study by analyzing Giddens' main works as well as relevant secondary literature. The results of the study show that globalization in Giddens' perspective is not just a process of homogenization, but a complex dynamic that involves a reciprocal transformation between global structures and local contexts. From an Islamic perspective, global interconnectedness is in line with the principle of human interconnectedness (ta'āruf), but it also requires a critical attitude in filtering out values that are contrary to Islamic teachings. Globalization presents challenges as well as opportunities for Muslim communities, especially in maintaining religious identity while actively participating in the global order. This study concludes that a critical, adaptive, and value-oriented understanding of globalization is essential for Muslim societies to be able to play a constructive role in the global arena without losing its normative foundation.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the educational approaches and strategies used by the Prophet Muhammad SAW in conveying Islamic teachings during the Mecca phase. The Mecca period was an important phase in the history of Islamic preaching, during which the Prophet faced complex social, cultural, and political challenges. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using literature review methods, analysing primary sources such as the Quran, hadith, and relevant classical and contemporary literature. The findings reveal that the Prophet's educational strategies in Mecca emphasized the cultivation of faith, character development, and the promotion of values such as monotheism, patience, and noble ethics. The methods employed included a personal (individual) approach, covert (sirriyah) preaching, setting a good example (uswah hasanah), and utilizing a limited social environment such as the house of Arqam bin Abi Arqam as a centre for training. This strategy demonstrated effectiveness in shaping the early generation of Muslims who were resilient and highly committed to Islamic teachings. The educational methods used by the Prophet in Mecca remain relevant for application in contemporary education, particularly in instilling faith and Islamic education, character and moral education for foundational or basic education.

Abstract

The Mughal Empire (1526–1858) was one of the largest Islamic dynasties to have existed in India and reached the peak of its glory in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its presence marked an important milestone in the history of Islamic civilization, as it succeeded in flourishing within a predominantly Hindu society. This study aims to describe how the Mughal Dynasty built an advanced Islamic civilization through inclusive political policies, religious tolerance, and harmonious cultural acculturation. The research employed a qualitative method through a literature review that examines the historical, social, cultural, and administrative aspects of the Mughal Empire. The findings reveal that Mughal rulers—particularly Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan—successfully established political stability by implementing the principle of Sulh-i Kull (universal peace), abolishing religious discrimination, and integrating Hindu elites into the bureaucracy and military. Moreover, Mughal civilization experienced rapid development in the fields of art, architecture, literature, and governmental administration. However, decline began during the reign of Aurangzeb due to stricter religious policies, internal conflicts, military stagnation, and increasing British intervention. This study emphasizes that the Mughal Empire’s success in managing pluralism offers valuable lessons for building multicultural societies in the contemporary world.

Abstract

The Ottoman Empire played a highly crucial role, especially in the expansion of Islamic territories and the development of Islamic civilization in Europe. The peak of Ottoman advancement occurred under the leadership of Sultan Suleiman I. He was known as al-Qanuni, meaning “the lawgiver,” because he successfully formulated laws to regulate society. During the Islamic golden age, many Europeans came to learn and seek knowledge from Muslims, enabling them to emerge from the Dark Ages. The Islamic world had once reached great heights in science, technology, and philosophy, particularly under the Abbasid Dynasty, which lasted from the 8th to the 15th century. This study uses library research with a historical approach. The results show that the Ottoman Empire achieved significant glory in its era, successfully expanding Islamic territories across three continents and managing the longest-lasting government in Islamic history (approximately seven centuries) involving 39 ruling leaders. However, the Ottoman government placed strong emphasis on military strength; the kingdom’s position would weaken if its military institutions were not well maintained, while a strong military contributed to the empire’s progress. Nevertheless, the military still played an important role in supporting the greatness of the Ottomans.
