Abstract

Globalization is a multidimensional phenomenon that not only includes economic aspects, but also social, cultural, and political dimensions. Anthony Giddens, as a leading sociologist, made an important contribution to understanding globalization through the concept of global interconnectedness rooted in modernity. This article aims to analyze the concept of globalization according to Giddens, specifically through the framework of time-space distancing, interdependence, and global–local dialectics, and examine its relevance in the context of Muslim society. This study uses a qualitative approach through a literature study by analyzing Giddens' main works as well as relevant secondary literature. The results of the study show that globalization in Giddens' perspective is not just a process of homogenization, but a complex dynamic that involves a reciprocal transformation between global structures and local contexts. From an Islamic perspective, global interconnectedness is in line with the principle of human interconnectedness (ta'āruf), but it also requires a critical attitude in filtering out values that are contrary to Islamic teachings. Globalization presents challenges as well as opportunities for Muslim communities, especially in maintaining religious identity while actively participating in the global order. This study concludes that a critical, adaptive, and value-oriented understanding of globalization is essential for Muslim societies to be able to play a constructive role in the global arena without losing its normative foundation.
