Abstract

This study evaluated the potential of aquaculture effluent as a liquid organic fertilizer to enhance soil fertility and cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) productivity. Conducted in Blang Berandang Village, West Aceh Regency, the experiment employed a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with six treatments: a control (0% effluent), inorganic fertilizer, and four effluent concentrations (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), each replicated four times. Measured variables included soil chemical properties (pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and exchangeable potassium), plant growth parameters, and tuber yield. Results indicated that the aquaculture effluent was rich in nutrients, containing 35.2 mg L⁻¹ nitrogen, 12.6 mg L⁻¹ P₂O₅, and 22.4 mg L⁻¹ K₂O, with a C/N ratio of 3.6. Effluent application significantly improved soil physicochemical properties, raising soil pH from 5.5 to 6.9 and organic carbon from 1.25% to 2.45%. Furthermore, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and exchangeable potassium levels increased in proportion to effluent concentration. The 75% effluent treatment yielded the optimal results, producing a plant height of 135.4 cm and a tuber weight of 4.12 kg per plant—a 90% increase compared to the control. These findings demonstrate that aquaculture effluent significantly enhances soil fertility and cassava productivity relative to untreated controls. Consequently, its utilization offers a sustainable, eco-friendly strategy for integrated aquaculture–agriculture systems, contributing to increased crop production while mitigating environmental impacts associated with aquaculture waste.

Abstract

The Cetak Sawah Rakyat (CSR) program conceptually executed as a paddy field optimization initiative is a government strategy aimed at increasing rice production and strengthening food security by enhancing land productivity and cropping intensity. As an archipelagic region, Simeulue Regency possesses significant potential for rice field development; however, it faces various constraints, such as limited agricultural infrastructure and cultivation technology, which restrict optimal cropping frequency. This community service activity was conducted to enhance farmers' understanding and readiness regarding the implementation of the CSR Program in Simeulue Regency. Held at the Agricultural Extension Center (BPP) office in Salang District, the activity employed a participatory empowerment approach involving farmers, farmer groups, village governments, agricultural extension officers (PPL), and the Department of Agriculture of Simeulue Regency. The methods comprised preparatory stages, socialization and counseling, problem identification discussions, and the distribution of questionnaires to assess farmer group readiness. Of the 1,162 hectares of land proposed under the prospective farmer and land scheme (CPCL), 981.36 hectares met the technical and administrative requirements, with 31 farmer groups declared eligible for the program. This community service initiative successfully enhanced public understanding regarding their rights, obligations, and the importance of sustainable rice field management. The CSR program is expected to boost rice production by increasing annual harvest frequency, strengthen institutional capacity among farmers, increase community income, and support sustainable food security in archipelagic regions.

Abstract

Local rice germplasm is a valuable genetic resource for developing bacterial leaf blight (BLB)-resistant and high-yielding rice cultivars. However, information on the resistance of Southwest Aceh local rice to Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), particularly during the generative stage, remains limited. Previous studies have mainly focused on commercial cultivars or vegetative-stage screening, leaving the resistance potential of local germplasm at the reproductive stage largely unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the resistance of local rice to BLB at the generative stage of plant growth. The research was conducted at Experimental Field, Teuku Umar University. West Aceh (4°08′33″ N; 96°11′54″ E). Fifteen local rice genotypes, together with resistant and susceptible control varieties, were evaluated following artificial inoculation with Xoo strain VIII. Disease resistance was assessed based on incubation period and lesion length, while agronomic performance was evaluated using key yield-related traits. Seven local genotypes Itam Tangke Lango, Jantong, Jempa Puteh, Manyam U, Pade Manggeng-1, Pade Manggeng-2, and Rangan Lango were classified as resistant based on lesion length. Among the evaluated genotypes, Sikleng exhibited superior agronomic performance, producing the highest number of productive tillers (27.50) and grains per panicle (317.73). The novelty of this study lies in evaluating Southwest Aceh local rice germplasm for bacterial leaf blight resistance at the generative stage using Xoo strain VIII while integrating disease resistance with yield-related agronomic traits. The identified resistant genotypes provide valuable donor parents for breeding BLB-resistant, high-yielding rice cultivars and contribute to sustainable rice production and regional food security.
