Abstract

Background: Antenatal Care (ANC) is an early preventive measure to detect risk factors during pregnancy and childbirth, reduce the maternal mortality rate (MMR), and monitor fetal well-being. One factor that encourages pregnant women to attend regular ANC visits is not only the provision of information about their health condition, but also the midwife's ability to listen to complaints, show empathy, and provide friendly service. Effective communication can create patient satisfaction, which ultimately influences adherence to follow-up visits. Purpose: To determine the relationship between midwife communication and pregnant women's satisfaction with antenatal care services. Method: This quantitative study used an analytical survey design and a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 20 pregnant women selected using a total sampling technique. The study was conducted in July 2025 at the Khomba Waliyauw Community Health Center, Sentani. The research instruments used were a midwife communication questionnaire and a patient satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate chi-square statistical tests. Results: Most midwives had good communication skills, and most pregnant women were satisfied with antenatal care services. The chi-square test yielded a ρ value of 0.000 (<0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between midwife communication and maternal satisfaction with antenatal care services. Suggestion: Future research should expand the scope of variables, such as facilities and medical personnel competence, to provide more comprehensive results.   Keywords: Antenatal Care Services; Midwife Communication; Satisfaction Level; Pregnant Women.

Abstract

Pregnancy and the postpartum period are periods with a continuous and ongoing risk of HIV/AIDS infection, which are the targets of mother-to-child HIV prevention. Postpartum mothers with HIV positive require special care from health workers, especially midwives who are not only skilled in the technical aspects of patient care, but more than that must have empathy and be skilled in therapeutic communication. The high risk of HIV/AIDS transmission in midwives causes feelings of anxiety and reluctance to provide care to patients. Many health workers experience stress due to work, feelings of anxiety about contracting the disease, feelings of inability to meet job demands or what is expected from the job, which impacts the mental and physical health of midwives, which ultimately impacts the services provided. Objective: To explore the experiences of midwives in caring for postpartum mothers with HIV/AIDS. This type of research is qualitative with an exploratory phenomenological approach. Participants in this study were two midwives who had provided assistance to postpartum mothers with HIV/AIDS. Data collection techniques were observation, interviews, documentation, and triangulation. Data processing was carried out using the Colaizzi approach. The importance of midwives' experience in caring for postpartum mothers with HIV/AIDS will improve the midwives' ability to provide care to postpartum mothers with HIV. The midwives' ability to care for postpartum mothers with HIV/AIDS is also influenced by the midwives' experience in caring for postpartum mothers with HIV/AIDS. Some of the obstacles encountered by midwives in providing care are feelings of anxiety and shame in postpartum mothers that make sufferers disappear and refuse to undergo ANC examinations and refuse treatment. Midwives' hopes in caring for postpartum mothers with HIV/AIDS, postpartum mothers must remain enthusiastic and continue treatment to prolong life and prevent transmission to children, extra support is needed for the mother's psychology, emotional support from health workers and the patient's family. Motivation and deeper support are needed for postpartum mothers with HIV/AIDS in midwife care so that care can be carried out properly without any obstacles.

Abstract

Maternal mental health from pregnancy to the postpartum period represents a major public health concern with substantial implications for maternal well-being and early child development. Physiological and psychological changes during pregnancy increase vulnerability to anxiety, stress, and depression, particularly in settings with limited access to mental health services. Pregnancy dance has emerged as a non-pharmacological, mind–body intervention that may support maternal psychological well-being. Objective to examine the effect of pregnancy dance on maternal mental health from pregnancy through the postpartum period. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design was applied. The study involved 32 pregnant women in the second and third trimesters who participated in a structured pregnancy dance programme conducted 2–3 times per week during pregnancy. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Mental health outcomes were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) at three time points: before the intervention, after the antenatal intervention, and during the postpartum period. Statistical analyses were performed according to data distribution, with a significance level of α = 0.05. Significant reductions in depression, anxiety, and stress scores were observed following the pregnancy dance intervention (p < 0.001). Improvements in mental health were sustained into the postpartum period, with most participants classified as having a low risk of mental health disorders. The greatest reduction was observed in stress scores, followed by anxiety and depression. Pregnancy dance is an effective intervention for improving maternal mental health from pregnancy to the postpartum period. This approach offers a safe, low-cost, and feasible promotive and preventive strategy for integration into comprehensive antenatal care, particularly in areas with limited access to mental health services.
