Abstract

This article examines the role of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in fostering self-efficacy among high school students, emphasizing how this pedagogical approach enhances students' self-efficacy in their ability to understand and apply chemistry concepts. By engaging students with real-world problems, PBL promotes active participation and critical thinking, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning. The study investigates how PBL aids students in overcoming challenges traditionally associated with chemistry education by providing hands-on, direct experiences. The research shows a notable difference in students' self-efficacy before and after the implementation of PBL, while no significant change was observed in students' self-efficacy before and after using the scientific approach. This article offers valuable insights for educators seeking to implement PBL in chemistry classrooms as a strategy to enhance student outcomes, foster a deeper understanding of chemistry, and cultivate sustained interest in the subject.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between critical thinking skills and self-efficacy in high school chemistry learning. This research investigates the correlation between students' critical thinking skills and their self-efficacy. Conducted at a senior high school in Jayapura, the research involved a sample of 96 students, selected using a random sampling technique. Utilizing a quantitative approach with a correlational research design, data were collected through standardized instruments measuring students’ critical thinking and self-efficacy. The instruments used were a self-efficacy questionnaire and a critical thinking skills test in the form of open-ended two-tier multiple-choice questions. The reliability of the critical thinking test was 0.850. The validity test of the self-efficacy questionnaire showed infit and outfit MNSQ values ranging from 0.77 to 1.30 using QUEST, with a reliability coefficient of 0.71. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics using the Pearson correlation test to determine the correlation between students’ critical thinking skills and selthe f-efficacy. The analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between the two variables, indicating that students with higher self-efficacy tend to demonstrate stronger critical thinking skills. Furthermore, the implications of this research align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4 on Quality Education, SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production), highlighting the contribution of chemistry education to sustainable development through enhanced critical thinking skills.

Abstract

National defense training for prospective teachers is a strategic effort to develop resilient, disciplined educators with a strong sense of national identity. This article presents an evaluation of a community service program in the form of national defense training assistance for 21 students of the first cohort of the Teacher Professional Education (PPG) program at Cenderawasih University. The three-day program was conducted at the National Defense Education Depot, RINDAM XVII Cenderawasih, combining interactive lectures, simulations, and field practices such as drill regulations (PBB), ceremonial procedures, group dynamics, and field psychology. The experiential learning approach and collaboration with the military were key to the program's implementation. Evaluation through pretest-posttest and participatory observation revealed significant improvements: all participants (100%) achieved the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) in the posttest, compared to only 14.29%-38.10% in the pretest. The greatest improvement was in drill regulations (85.71%), followed by military honors (80.95%), and national insight (71.43%). Qualitatively, participants showed enhanced discipline, teamwork, confidence, and understanding of national values. Activities such as campfires and field psychology simulations further strengthened solidarity and leadership skills. This program demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating experience-based training and educational-military partnerships in preparing prospective teachers as agents of character development for the younger generation. The results recommend incorporating similar training models into the PPG curriculum to reinforce the academic, social, and nationalistic competencies of future educators.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of the implementation of literacy culture on improving chemistry learning outcomes in class X students of SMA Negeri 7 Jayapura. In this context, the School Literacy Movement (GLS) is required to foster a culture of reading non-lesson books for 10-15 minutes before learning starts. The method used is purposive sampling, with data collection techniques in the form of questionnaires (questionnaires) for literacy culture and cognitive tests for learning outcomes. The results of the study show that the implementation of literacy culture in class X of SMA Negeri 7 Jayapura can improve chemistry learning outcomes with an average n-gain value of 0.52 which is in the medium category. However, the results of correlation and regression analysis showed that the literacy culture variable (X3) had a nonsignificant effect on learning outcomes (Y). The correlation coefficient (R) is very low, which is 0.005.
