Abstract

Qur’anic studies in Indonesia have undergone significant methodological transformations, evolving from oral traditions to written interpretations. This study addresses the scholarly gap regarding the lack of integrated analyses that holistically examine the traditions of Qur’anic recitation, writing, and interpretation in the Indonesian context. Employing a qualitative method through desk research, this study critically engages with both primary and secondary sources, including classical and contemporary tafsir works, standardized Indonesian mus}h}af editions, and academic journal articles. The findings reveal that the evolution of Qur’anic studies in Indonesia has been shaped by the interplay between local cultures and global Islamic traditions. Oral transmission methods such as Baghdadiyah and nagham characterized the early phase which gradually transitioned into written forms exemplified by the production of standardized mus}h}af manuscripts such as Mushaf Bahriyyah, Bombay, Braille, and Sign Language editions which aim to ensure both accessibility and authenticity. In terms of interpretation, prominent Indonesian scholars such as Abdur Rauf Singkili, HAMKA, and M. Quraish Shihab have developed context-based approaches tailored to socio-cultural realities. This study concludes that Qur’anic studies in Indonesia are dynamic, continually adapting to technological, cultural, and social changes. However, further research is necessary to explore interdisciplinary interpretive approaches involving gender, ecology, and socio-political issues. Strengthening contextual and thematic interpretations will enhance the role of the Qur’an as a responsive and transformative source of guidance for contemporary Indonesian Muslim society.

Abstract

There are many statements that men and women are different in all respects in the name of religion, especially Islam. Such reductions need to be re-examined so that there are no misperceptions that cause chaos and misinterpretation. With that, through the thought of Riffat Hassan as a foothold, Islam is very merciful to differences. Like the nature of men and women, both of which have the same potential in showing existence. It is necessary to consider and negotiate Riffat Hassan's thoughts on equality between men and women. Three main key points; the first is that equality is more important than others, the second is the concept of polygamy which is not necessarily interpreted as letter leg, and the third is the concept of veil or purdah which has many interpretations. Thus, through the study of Riffat Hassan's thoughts, it can be summarized that; everything departs from God's justice that does not discriminate against his servants because the main thing in God's eyes is the devotion of his servants.

Abstract

The study of Qur'anic interpretation continues to develop along with the dynamics of Islamic thought, one of which is through the pattern of kalām interpretation developed by the Mu'tazilah. Tafsir al-Kashshāf by al-Zamakhsharī is one of the main representations of the Mu'tazilah rational approach in understanding the verses of tanzīh i'tiqādiyyah. This study aims to analyze the epistemological relationship between reason and revelation in the interpretation, especially in interpreting the concepts of divinity, divine justice, and human free will. In this context, a methodological dilemma arises between the authority of reason as the main interpretive instrument and the authority of revelation as a source of transcendent truth, which is problematic in the discourse of interpretation—both historically and contemporary. Using qualitative methods based on literature studies and content analysis of the interpretation text, this study found that al-Zamakhsharī emphasized the supremacy of reason in interpreting verses containing elements of anthropomorphism, and rejected literal interpretations that have the potential to equate God with creatures. This interpretation consistently prioritizes linguistic and logical approaches to maintain the purity of the concept of monotheism. This study contributes to understanding the epistemological construction of Mu'tazilah interpretation and opens up opportunities for the development of contemporary interpretation methodology that is rational-transcendental and contextual.

Abstract

This study examines the complex relationship between religion, violence, and secularism by analyzing the perspectives of thinkers such as Marx, Nietzsche, Hobbes, and Karen Armstrong. Although religion is often considered the primary source of violence, this paper argues that violence related to religion is better understood as a manifestation of deeper political, economic, and existential forces. This study also explores the different paths of secularism development in the Western and Islamic worlds. In the West, secularism emerged as a revolutionary response to the corruption of church authority during the Dark Ages. On the other hand, secularism in the Islamic context was shaped by the need to manage religious diversity, as illustrated by the Medina Charter. The method used in this research is a qualitative-historical analysis of texts discussing the relationship between religion, violence, and the state. The novelty of this research lies in the application of José Casanova's concept of secularism to reveal that, despite the process of secularization, the West has experienced a resurgence of religion in the public sphere—thus demonstrating the failure of secularism as an ideology and nor statecraft principles.
