Abstract

The phenomenon of alcohol addiction in Indonesia has rapidly spread across various demographics, from the elderly to the youth. A strategic approach to addressing this issue involves drawing upon the gradual prohibition of alcohol (khamr) established during the Prophet Muhammad’s time. This study aims to examine the stages and processes of khamr prohibition in early Islam as a reflection for contemporary challenges. The research adopts a qualitative methodology, sourcing information from books and other literature (Library Research), and applies a descriptive historical analysis to integrate Tartibunnuzul (chronological order of revelation) and Sababunnuzul (context of revelation) approaches. Findings reveal that the Prophet’s method addressed alcohol prohibition progressively, starting with prohibiting intoxication during prayer (An-Nisa [4]: 43), encouraging contemplation on its benefits and harms (Al-Baqarah [2]: 219), and finally, establishing an absolute prohibition (Al-Maidah [5]: 219). This gradual approach proved psychologically effective and presents valuable insights for addressing modern-day challenges in dakwah.

Abstract

This research explores the relationship between the concept of underground water and agricultural plant growth as mentioned in the Qur'an, focusing on Surah Az-Zumar verse 21 and Al-Baqarah verse 74. The identified issue is the lack of research combining semantic and scientific approaches to understand this relationship, even though the concept was mentioned in the Qur'an long before modern scientific discoveries. The research study uses a descriptive-analytical method with a semantic and scientific approach, employing theories of isytiqaq (derivation) and siyaq (context) for Qur’anic text analysis. The research demonstrates that rainwater seeping into the ground and stored in underground reservoirs is a vital source of life, as illustrated in the Qur'an. The study argues that the Qur'an provides clear guidance on natural processes that sustain life, which is later validated by modern science, showcasing the scientific evidence of i'jaz ilmy in a broader context.

Abstract

This study examines the authenticity and limitations sources of Tafsīr bi al-Maʾṯūr in addressing contemporary intellectual challenges. While often regarded as authoritative for relying on the Qur'an, Hadith, and the sayings of the Sahabah and Tābi'īn, Tafsīr bi al-Maʾṯūr faces challenges such as the inclusion of Isrāiliyāt, omitted Sanad (chains of transmission), as fabricated reports. This study explores traditional scholars' approaches to these issues using qualitative and descriptive methods based on library research. It evaluates the contribution ofTafsīr bi al-Maʾṯūr to modern Islamic thought. The conclusion indicates that not all Tafsīr bi al-Maʾṯūr maintain high authenticity despite its general perception as being based on reliable sources. Some interpretations rely on narratives that lack a direct connection to the Qur'anic text, including Isrāiliyāt and fabricated hadiths, or omit Sanad, raising doubts about their credibility. Therefore, looking at previous studies which say that Tafsīr bi al-Maʾṯūr is sufficient as the primary reference in understanding the text of the Qur'an, this is fatal because a more dynamic and contextual interpretation approach is still needed to ensure that the interpretation of the Qur'an remains relevant in the modern era.

Abstract

The emergence of new Islamic groups in Indonesia often sparks debates regarding the validity of qirāʾāt and the interpretation of the Qur’an, with each group claiming to hold the most authentic understanding. The diversity of qirāʾāt poses a challenge in maintaining unity among Muslims. Imam Qurṭūbī, through his moderate approach, emphasizes the importance of objectively understanding these variations without excessive bias. This study employs a descriptive analytical method with a qualitative approach based on library research. It focuses on the analysis of Ṭahārah verses in Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:6) and Surah An-Nisa (4:43). The findings indicate that Imam Qurṭūbī elaborates on qirāʾāt differences in detail without prioritizing one over another, reflecting a balanced interpretative approach. This moderation offers a solution for addressing differences while strengthening Muslim unity.

Abstract

The phrase Marriage is Scary resonates in Indonesian society, influenced by rising Marital Violence or KDRT cases. The Central Bureau of Statistics reported a decrease in marriages from 1,695,255 in 2022 to 1,577,255 in 2023. Factors like patriarchal culture and inadequate education contribute to this issue. This study examines the Qur'an's perspective on gender harmony and its role in reducing violence and fostering harmonious households. Using a qualitative, critical-historical approach, the research integrates Asbabunnuzul and Qishshatul Qur’an with a correlational or Munasabah theory by library research method. Findings highlight the Qur'an's emphasis on premarital education, balanced roles between spouses, and prioritizing gender harmony to prevent violence. The study identifies examples of ideal households in the Qur'an, such as the families of Prophet Ibrahim and Imran, illustrating the importance of faith, patience, and mutual cooperation in achieving harmony. In the Indonesian context, where patriarchal norms and increasing marital violence contribute to marital anxiety, this study emphasizes the importance of Qur'anic teachings on justice, mutual respect and premarital preparation for building resilient households.

Abstract

The phenomenon of unrestricted dating after engagement has sparked a critical debate within Islamic thought concerning the enforcement of Sharia law. Society perceives dating after engagement as a means to better understand each other to prevent divorce, alongside the assumption that khitbah is considered a permissible form of dating. Based on this issue, the researcher aims to re-examine the interpretation of khitbah in the Qur'an. The method employed is qualitative, categorized under library research, utilizing documentation techniques with historical analysis. The findings of this study indicate that Islam encourages its followers to marry as a means of safeguarding themselves from sinful acts and fulfilling the principles of sunnatullah. Marriage in Islam is regarded as a form of worship aimed at creating a harmonious, loving, and respectful family. The practice of unrestricted dating after khitbah or engagement is seen as deviating from the Islamic purpose of marriage. Commitment to Sharia and adherence to religious boundaries are key in the process of establishing a legitimate relationship. Therefore, preserving honor and following religious guidance in premarital relationships represent a Muslim's responsibility in upholding Islamic values and Sharia law.

Abstract

The study of Qur'anic interpretation continues to develop along with the dynamics of Islamic thought, one of which is through the pattern of kalām interpretation developed by the Mu'tazilah. Tafsir al-Kashshāf by al-Zamakhsharī is one of the main representations of the Mu'tazilah rational approach in understanding the verses of tanzīh i'tiqādiyyah. This study aims to analyze the epistemological relationship between reason and revelation in the interpretation, especially in interpreting the concepts of divinity, divine justice, and human free will. In this context, a methodological dilemma arises between the authority of reason as the main interpretive instrument and the authority of revelation as a source of transcendent truth, which is problematic in the discourse of interpretation—both historically and contemporary. Using qualitative methods based on literature studies and content analysis of the interpretation text, this study found that al-Zamakhsharī emphasized the supremacy of reason in interpreting verses containing elements of anthropomorphism, and rejected literal interpretations that have the potential to equate God with creatures. This interpretation consistently prioritizes linguistic and logical approaches to maintain the purity of the concept of monotheism. This study contributes to understanding the epistemological construction of Mu'tazilah interpretation and opens up opportunities for the development of contemporary interpretation methodology that is rational-transcendental and contextual.

Abstract

A textualist interpretation of Surah An-Nisa verse 34, particularly regarding the term Qawwām has often fueled issues of discrimination against women. This verse is frequently cited as a basis for restricting women's roles across various spheres, from social involvement to administrative duties. This study employs a qualitative, library-based approach, incorporating thematic analysis, linguistic studies, and historical context related to sabab nuzul and sabab wurud. Findings indicate that Islam does not explicitly prohibit women from leadership roles in governance, social settings, economics, or religious spheres, as long as specific conditions in line with Islamic Criteria are met. By exploring narratives such as Maryam’s service in Baitul Maqdis and Queen Bilqis's leadership in the Qur’an, it is evident that women’s leadership can succeed when rooted in integrity. Such roles are often contextually motivated by necessity and circumstance. A woman in leadership, however, is expected to uphold respect within her household, demonstrating balance and commitment to her familial responsibilities.
