Abstract

Soybean seeds deteriorate rapidly, especially under humid tropics. An effective method for boosting seed germination is invigoration, which is applied as a pre-planting seed treatment to stimulate the metabolic activity in the seed. The research aimed to compare the effectiveness of vermicompost priming with other invigoration methods in improving the physiological quality of soybean seeds. The experiment was arranged in a split-plot, randomized design. The main plots were seed lots based on low, medium, and high germination of three soybean varieties (“Argomulyo”, “Detap 1”, and “Devon 1”). Subplot, invigoration method: control, matriconditioning with rice husk charcoal, a ratio of seed (g): rice husk charcoal (g): water (mL) 9:6:7 for 12 hours; osmoconditioning with 15% PEG 6000 solution, a ratio of seed (g): solution (mL) was 1:2 for 12 hours, and vermicompost priming with a ratio of seed (g): vermicompost (g): water (mL) 12:14:12 for 18 hours. Each experimental unit used 120 g of seeds. The invigoration treatment was conducted in a room with a temperature of 25 ± 2°C and a relative humidity (RH) of 65-70%. The results showed that invigoration treatment can be used on soybean seeds with moderate viability (germination rate of 70-79%). In “Argomulyo” and “Detap 1”, the seed physiological quality increased with vermicompost priming, and in “Devon 1”, it increased with matriconditioning. The enhanced physiological quality of soybean seeds may be attributed to the complete nutrient and phytohormone content in vermicompost.

Abstract

The rapid deterioration of soybean seeds during storage severely limits the availability of high-quality planting stock. Seed invigoration, specifically through matriconditioning, a technique involving controlled hydration using a moist solid medium, offers a method to improve the germination capacity of aged seeds. This study was thus designed to ascertain the optimal dosage of vermicompost utilization as a matriconditioning agent for improving the physiological quality of soybean seeds. Vermicompost, the product of organic matter decomposition, provides a comprehensive nutrient profile that may enhance seed physiological quality. The research aimed to determine the optimal vermicompost dosage for improving soybean seed physiological quality. A two-factor Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replications was employed. The factors were the priming ratio seed (g): vermicompost (g): water (ml) at four levels R0 (control), R1 (12:14:12), R2 (12:14:13), R3 (12:14:14) and priming duration four levels: D0 (control), D1 (6 hours), D2 (12 hours), D3 (18 hours). The experiment used Argomulyo cultivar seeds (initial germination 70-79%). Results indicated that the most effective invigoration treatment utilized the vermicompost priming ratio of 12:14:12 and an incubation period of 18 hours at ambient conditions (25±2 ºC).

Abstract

Organic rice cultivation following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) is a key strategy for sustainable agriculture, yet its success depends on farmers’ participation in implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). This study analyzes the factors influencing farmers’ participation in GAP within the Pangudi Bogo Farmers’ Group, Boyolali Regency. Using a quantitative approach with 30 respondents, data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method through multiple linear regression to identify factors affecting farmers’ participation in GAP. Farmers’ participation in GAP implementation was found to be relatively high. The results indicate that experience in organic farming and extension have a significant positive effect on farmers’ participation, whereas farmer satisfaction has a significant negative effect. In contrast, conventional farming experience and farm size were found to have no significant effect. The findings of this study highlight that enhancing organic farming experience and the role of agricultural extension agents are key factors in strengthening farmers’ participation in GAP. Moreover, farmers’ satisfaction with cultivation outcomes should be directed as a motivation to further engage in GAP implementation.
