Abstract

This study examines the concept of maqâshid contained in Rasail Nur by Badiuzzaman Said Nursi through a literature approach. The Qur'an, as a guideline for the life of Muslims, covers various aspects of life. The maqâshid approach in interpretation aims to achieve human welfare. Maqâshid means the goal or principle desired by the shari'a in establishing laws for the good of humanity. The history of maqâshid began with Imam al-Tirmidzi in the 3rd century AH and continued to develop until the modern era with scholars such as Muhammad Abduh and Sa'id Nursi who expanded the study of maqâshid to various aspects of life. This article explains how Said Nursi applied the concept of maqâshid to understand and apply the teachings of the Qur'an according to the demands of the times.

Abstract

Artikel ini mengkaji tentang kitab nail al maram min tafsir ayat al ahkam karya Shaddiq Hasan Khan yang termasuk sebagai salah satu kitab tafsir ahkam pada era kontemporer penafsiran al-Qur’an. Kitab ini hanya akan dianalisis dari segi penggunaan sumbernya, tidak dikaji metodologi atau sistematika penafsirannya secara khusus. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis validitas penggunaan sumber hadis dalam ayat ahkam pada kitab nail al maram min tafsir ayat al ahkam. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk menganalisa bagaimana jalan pemikiran Shiddiq Hasan Khan terhadap ayat-ayat ahkam. Objek studi ini meliputi tiga ayat ahkam yang terfokus pada hukum fikih ibadiyah, yakni ayat tentang makna salat wusta, ayat tentang makna istatha’a (mampu) dalam haji, dan ayat tentang syarat berwudhu. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan studi analisis teks. Peneliti akan menganalisis tiga ayat ahkam pada kitab nail al maram min tafsir ayat al ahkam, kemudian mencari dan menelaah apakah terdapat sebuah hadis dalam penafsiran tersebut dan dianggap benar oleh Shiddiq Hasan Khan. Setelah melakukan langkah tersebut, maka peneliti akan menemukan sebuah hasil yang kemungkinan besar dapat divalidasi kebenarannya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Shiddiq Hasan Khan terbukti tidak bertaqlid pada satu madzhab fikih dan langsung merujuk pada hadis Nabi. Dengan kata lain, pemikiran Shiddiq Hasan Khan menyerupai pemikiran salafi.

Abstract

This study examines Tafsīr lughawī as one of the styles of Qur’anic interpretation that emphasizes a linguistic approach. This interpretive style emerged from an awareness of the importance of understanding the Qur’an through Arabic linguistic tools encompassing grammar, semantics, and rhetoric. The main purpose of this study is to comprehensively describe the definition, historical development, various types, characteristics, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of Tafsīr lughawī, along with the authenticity and significance of Tafsīr works that adopt the linguistic approach. This research employs a qualitative method using a library research approach, based on various classical and contemporary Tafsīr literatures. The findings show that Tafsīr lughawī significantly contributes to exploring the meanings of Qur’anic verses in depth through linguistic analysis. However, this approach also has limitations, particularly in the contextualization of social, historical, and maqāṣidī dimensions. Therefore, integration between Tafsīr lughawī and other approaches is essential to achieve a more complete and relevant understanding of the Qur’an in accordance with contemporary dynamics.

Abstract

In addition to interpreting the Qur'an through rational reasoning (ra'yi), scholars also employ an interpretive approach based on narrations, known as the bi al-ma’thūr interpretation. This form of interpretation is esteemed by Ibn Taimiyah and Ibn Kathir and carries high validity and evidential support. To such an extent, outcomes from the bi al-ma'ṡur interpretation are obligatory and not to be disregarded. This study critically analyzes and validates the bi al-ma’thūr interpretation model that emerged in the mutaqaddimīn era. The focus is on two seminal interpretations, namely "Jāmi' al-Bayān an Ta’wīl Ȃyi al-Qur'ān" by Muhammad bin Jarīr al-Ṭabarī (d. 310 H.) and "Bahr al-‘Ulūm" by Naṣr ibn Muhammad al-Samarqandi (d. 375 H.). This research employs an analytical descriptive approach and falls under library research since primary data source originates from literature within libraries. The research includes verification, used to reevaluate principles and methods of interpretation in relation to contemporary relevance. Findings reveal that despite being considered the best, the bi al-ma’thūr interpretation model exhibits problematic deficiencies. Among these are weak and even questionable authenticity (munkar) in narrations, often with lacking isnads, making distinguishing between reliable (ṣaḥīḥ) and weak (ḍa'īf) challenging. Many narrations include israiliyat (Jewish and Christian narratives) sans commentary or selective narrators, citing negatively-viewed sources. Therefore, interpreting this model is advised to be avoided by audiences lacking expertise in riwayah and dirayah (methods of narration and interpretation).

Abstract

In the contemporary era, the infiltration of non-authentic narratives has permeated the discourse of Qur’anic interpretation. This phenomenon poses significant challenges. This article addresses the issue of how the story of Harūt and Mārūt has been infiltrated by data sources and has the potential to distort the divine meaning, as well as how al-dakhil plays a role in the epistemology of da’wah. The main objective of this study is to analyse the dialectical relationship of al-dakhīl in the interpretation of Mafātīḥ Al-Ġaib, focusing on the impact of this fictional infiltration narrative on Islamic da’wah discourse. To achieve this, a qualitative method encompassing a comprehensive review of literature and interpretations related to the story of Harūt and Mārūt serves as the foundation of the research methodology. The results of this study indicate that the spread of infiltrative narratives without preventive measures can lead to the degradation of fundamental Islamic values. These findings underscore the need for a responsible approach in explaining Islamic teachings. In another dimension, this article advocates for the validation of sources and the promotion of accurate interpretations. Ultimately, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse in the world of Qur’anic interpretation by emphasizing the importance of preserving authentic Islamic teachings in an increasingly contemporary world.

Abstract

This article examines the maqāṣidī (purpose-based) approach to interpretation in Sayyid Quthb's work Fī Ẓilāl al-Qur’ān, and relates it to Waṣfī ‘Āsyūr Abū Zayd's theory of maqāṣid al-Qur’an. Through comparative analysis, this article highlights how Sayyid Quthb directs his interpretation toward the essential values and primary objectives that the Qur’an seeks to achieve, rather than on narrative or speculative details that are irrelevant to the spiritual and moral purposes of the text. His approach aligns with the structure of maqāṣid suwar as explained by Waṣfī ‘Āsyūr, which involves dividing the surah into thematic units that lead to a single primary objective, while avoiding discussions not directly indicated by the text. This article demonstrates that Sayyid Quthb applies a consistent interpretive framework, focusing on personal and social transformation, and emphasizing spiritual values such as murāqabah and khasyyah as the fruits of a deep understanding of the Qur'an. Thus, Fī Ẓilāl al-Qur’ān can be positioned as a practical example of the application of maqāṣidī tafsir, which has made an important contribution to the modern tafsir tradition.

Abstract

This article examines the humanistic interpretation of the Qur’an by Abdurrahman Wahid in relation to social issues in Indonesia. Utilizing a sociological approach, the article analyzes six spectra of Wahid’s humanistic interpretations that provide solutions to various discourses surrounding these national challenges. First, it addresses the issue of religious exclusivism as presented in Surah Al-Baqarah [2:256], where Wahid emphasizes the necessity of fostering awareness of religious pluralism. Second, in the discourse on education and moral decadence, Wahid advocates for character education through Surah al-‘Aṣr [103:1-3] and Surah al-Shūrā [42:30]. Third, regarding gender discrimination in the social realm, Wahid interprets Surah al-Nisā’ [4:34] and Surah al-Ḥujurāt [49:13], proposing role equality as a solution. Fourth, in the context of state politics, Wahid discusses the challenges posed by the capitalist system, drawing from Surah al-Nisā’ [4:135] and Surah al-Baqarah [2:282], while advocating for leadership oriented towards social welfare. Fifth, concerning the issue of poverty, Wahid references Surah al-Ḥashr [59:7] to emphasize the importance of community empowerment. Lastly, in addressing the cultural crisis, Wahid refers to Surah al-Ḥajj [22:40] to promote awareness of multiculturalism. Overall, this article argues that in the discourse of Qur’anic interpretation, Abdurrahman Wahid has enriched the contextual reading of the Qur’an by employing a humanistic paradigm tailored to the socio-religious and national contexts he faced.

Abstract

Isu gender tetap menjadi fokus kajian dan subjek perdebatan di kalangan ilmuwan, dengan sebagian kelompok menolaknya dengan alasan bahwa Islam tidak mengakui prinsip kesetaraan gender. Kompleksitas masalah publik seputar isu gender semakin mencuat ketika dihadapkan pada fenomena kontemporer. Pertama, ada pandangan yang menyatakan bahwa gender adalah konstruksi sosial, sehingga perbedaan tidak secara otomatis mencirikan perbedaan peran dan perilaku dalam ranah sosial. Kedua, ada pandangan yang menyatakan bahwa perbedaan gender selalu memiliki dampak pada konstruksi konsep gender dalam konteks kehidupan sosial, sehingga selalu ada jenis peran yang berstereotip gender. Artikel ini berusaha mengkaji kesetaraan gender menurut pandangan Nasaruddin Umar. Penulis menggunakan metode penelitian kepustakaan deskriptif-analitis. Hasil dari artikel ini menunjukkan bahwa Nasaruddin Umar menyempurnakan teorinya tentang kesetaraan gender dengan menemukan beberapa catatan penting. Selain melihat makna semantik dalam ayat-ayat yang terklasifikasi, ia juga secara kritis meninjau kesetaraan gender dalam Al-Qur'an secara umum.
