Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The listening comprehension test (maharah istima') instrument for basic-level Arabic learners is still limited and has not yet been able to measure language competence comprehensively. Previous studies have emphasized literal understanding but have paid less attention to phonetic, cognitive, and visual dimensions, resulting in suboptimal instruments. This study aims to analyze and formulate the standardization of the maharah istima' test based on Musthofa Sya'ban's perspective, which is relevant to the needs of beginners. The method used is a library research approach, with primary data from Ma'ayir Lughawiyah and secondary data from books, journals, and scientific articles. The analysis was conducted through identifying key concepts, categorizing themes, and comparing them with previous research findings to develop a conceptual model. This study offers a listening comprehension test model based on Musthofa Sya'ban's standards suitable for beginners. It thus can serve as a reference in developing Arabic language evaluation instruments at the basic level.

Abstract

The difference between today’s social reality and the historical context in which the hadith emerged necessitates a reinterpretation of several texts that are not always consistent with the dynamics of modern society. This need for adjustment has given rise to a liberal-rejectionist approach that seeks to interpret the hadith in a more historical, rational, and contextual manner, particularly with respect to issues of justice, gender bias, and universal human values. Although more relevant to contemporary society, this approach still raises methodological and epistemological issues related to the authority of the hadith and the limits of reinterpretation. In this context, this study formulates two main foci: first, how the concepts and practices of the liberal-rejectionist approach are understood in hadith studies; and second, the epistemological and social impacts of this approach on the authority of hadith and on the religious practices of Muslims. This study employs a systematic literature review following PRISMA guidelines, covering the stages of searching, selecting, extracting, and analyzing 33 scientific articles published between 2015 and 2025. The analysis employed a qualitative thematic approach to explore the conceptual, methodological, and social impact patterns that emerged in the literature. The results show that the liberal-rejectionist approach arose from the need to respond to several hadiths deemed incompatible with developments in social reality, particularly those concerning gender issues, human rights, and social justice. This approach presents a more historical and contextual reading, thereby bridging the gap between the text and changing realities. This approach is manifested in the reinterpretation, recontextualization, and rejection of certain hadiths, with attention to potential narratorial bias and the socio-historical context. These findings reveal a shift in perspective on the authority of hadith and have sparked debate between progressives and traditionalists over the legitimacy of this approach.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of the meanings of Arabic words absorbed into Indonesian through a semantic analysis of lexicographical sources. The research employs a qualitative, literature-based approach, analyzing 23 Arabic loanwords listed in the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (Great Dictionary of the Indonesian Language) and comparing them with their original meanings in the Al-Munawwir dictionary. The analysis was conducted by classifying changes in meaning into narrowing, broadening, shifting, amelioration, and pejoration. The results show that Arabic loanwords undergo various semantic changes, including narrowing, broadening, shifting, amelioration, and pejoration. Most religious terms, such as fitrah, ibadah, syariat, and iman, have narrowed in meaning due to the institutionalization of religious practices. In contrast, terms such as hijrah and dakwah have broadened in meaning in line with developments in social discourse and the media. On the other hand, words such as bid‘ah and jihad show shifts and pejorative changes influenced by ideological contestation and public representation. These transformations in meaning shape a contextual and dynamic understanding of Islam, but can reduce normative concepts if not accompanied by adequate semantic literacy.

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the effect of animated cartoons as a learning medium on students’ listening and speaking skills in Arabic language instruction. Methods – The study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design involving eleventh-grade students at MA Darul Kamal NW Kembang Kerang. Using purposive sampling, students were assigned to an experimental group (n = 25) taught with Arabic cartoon animation films and a control group (n = 28) receiving conventional instruction. Data were collected through validated listening and speaking tests and analysed using the Mann–Whitney U test and ANCOVA, with effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals reported. Findings – The experimental group outperformed the control group in the posttest (M = 86.20 vs. 70.96). The Mann–Whitney U test revealed a significant difference with a large effect size (p < .001; r = 0.78). This result was confirmed by ANCOVA, which showed a significant treatment effect after controlling for baseline scores (F = 32.25, p < .001; partial ?² = 0.57). Overall, animated cartoons significantly enhanced students’ listening and speaking skills, with a stronger effect on listening. Research Implications – The findings of this study have practical implications for Arabic language learning, particularly the use of animated audiovisual media as a routine learning strategy to improve students' listening and speaking skills in a more interactive, student-centered manner.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relative effectiveness and contextual advantages of the Education Unit Level Curriculum (KTSP), the 2013 Curriculum (K13), and the Merdeka Curriculum in developing Arabic language competencies among secondary school students, specifically listening (istimāʿ), speaking (kalām), reading (qirāʾah), and writing (kitābah). This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) guided by the PRISMA 2020 framework. A systematic search was conducted across Google Scholar, DOAJ, Scopus, and ResearchGate, resulting in 36 peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025 that met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that KTSP predominantly supports receptive and structural competencies, particularly reading and grammatical mastery, but provides limited opportunities for oral skill development. The 2013 Curriculum demonstrates more systematic literacy development through a scientific approach, although listening and speaking skills remain uneven due to variations in resources and teacher readiness. Meanwhile, the Merdeka Curriculum shows relative effectiveness in integrating receptive and productive skills through differentiated and project-based learning, although its implementation outcomes vary across educational contexts. This review contributes original insight by offering a comprehensive comparative synthesis of three national curricula and highlighting that curriculum effectiveness is shaped not by structural reform alone, but by pedagogical alignment, institutional readiness, and contextual support in Arabic language education.

Abstract

The digital era has brought significant transformation to Islamic Religious Education (PAI), resulting in a crisis of essentialism in which the core values of Islamic teachings—such as tawhid, morality, and worship—are increasingly reduced to symbolic expressions rather than deeply internalised spirituality. This study aims to analyse the crisis of essentialism in PAI and explore strategies for revitalising its essential meaning amid the dominance of digital culture. Using a qualitative library research method, data were collected from books, journal articles, and scientific publications relevant to Islamic education and digital culture. The findings show that digital media has fostered a form of superficial religiosity characterised by performative piety, weak moral reflection, and diminished transcendental awareness. This crisis is mainly caused by the dominance of visual-symbolic culture, low levels of religious digital literacy, limited pedagogical adaptation among PAI teachers, and an unresponsive curriculum to contemporary challenges. To address these issues, the study proposes integrative and transformative strategies, including strengthening religious digital literacy, applying reflective-contextual pedagogy, implementing project-based learning, and redefining the teacher’s role as a spiritual mentor. Strengthening a school culture rooted in Islamic spirituality is also crucial to restoring the depth and authenticity of Islamic values.

Abstract

The use of Fuṣḥa and 'Āmiyah in the context of Islamic higher education in Egypt creates complex linguistic dynamics for Indonesian students at Al-Azhar University. This study aims to analyze the relationship among the choice of Arabic language varieties, academic demands, and students' social adaptation in a real diglossic environment. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 25 Indonesian students and subsequently analyzed using content analysis from a sociolinguistic perspective. The results show that Fuṣḥa functions not only as a formal academic medium but also as a symbol of scholarly authority and legitimacy of academic identity. At the same time,‘Āmiyah becomes the main instrument in building social relations, understanding local culture, and achieving practical communication effectiveness. The continuous interaction between the two varieties fosters adaptive communicative competence, characterized by strategic code-switching, sensitivity to social norms, and pragmatic flexibility. These findings show that Arabic diglossia functions as a productive linguistic resource rather than merely a barrier to learning. This study provides a conceptual contribution to the study of Arabic sociolinguistics. It offers pedagogical implications for the development of Arabic language learning for foreign speakers that align with sociolinguistic realities.

Abstract

This research is motivated by differences in judges' decisions in disputes over the default of a mudharabah contract in the religious court environment, even though the objects of the dispute and the legal bases used are similar. This study aims to analyze inconsistencies in judges' legal reasoning in assessing the elements of default and their implications for the consistency of the application of Sharia economic law in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative method with a juridical-normative approach, drawing on two decisions of the Yogyakarta Religious Court, Number 392/Pdt.G/2021/PA. YK and Number 370/Pdt.G/2020/PA. YK by analyzing positive legal norms, DSN-MUI fatwas, and the principles of muamalah fiqh. The results of the study show that the judge in the first case emphasizes the legal-formal approach, oriented toward legal certainty, while the judge in the second case adopts a substantive-normative approach that considers the fairness and good faith of the parties. These paradigm differences indicate a disharmony in the interpretation of sharia law and in the proof of mudharabah contracts. This disharmony has implications for the weakening of legal certainty in the settlement of Sharia economic disputes. Theoretically, these findings confirm Gustav Radbruch's view of the tension between the value of legal certainty (rechtssicherheit) and substantive justice (gerechtigkeit) in judicial practice. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare guidelines for the interpretation of sharia economic law that integrates the principles of positive law, fiqh muamalah, and maqashid al-sharia in encouraging real business sector financing and supporting development of the sharia economy.
