Abstract

Abstract

Background: First aid is the initial action taken before someone is taken to hospital when they experience health problems such as accidents, fainting, insect bites, broken bones, bleeding, or other conditions. Accidents and health problems can occur anywhere, whether at home or at work. A security officer may face injuries, broken bones, fainting, and situations that will cause problems for themselves or others. Therefore, proper first aid measures are very important. First aid is so important that basic first aid training must also be known by security officers. Objective: This Community Service programme focuses on providing education and training on first aid to security personnel to improve the safety of themselves, visitors, and other employees. Method: The community service activity uses a method of outreach, discussion, and training. The outreach and training are presented by the community service team from the Faculty of Nursing, Pelita Harapan University. This activity was attended by 100 security personnel from PT BSS Jakarta and evaluated using a pre-post test. Results: The community service activity was carried out successfully with a pre-test score of 66.02 and a post-test score of 83.47. The activity showed an increase in knowledge after education and training were provided. It is hoped that the community service first aid activity can be carried out on an ongoing basis.

Abstract

Hypertension is a medical condition that significantly increases the risk of other diseases and can cause fatal complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and even death. Objective: To determine the relationship between self-management behavior and blood pressure in patients with hypertension. Methods: This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional research design. The population in this study was the Tambakrejo GKJW congregation. Sampling was conducted using non-probability sampling with purposive sampling. The sample in this study consisted of 93 members of the Tambakrejo GKJW congregation who suffered from hypertension. Data collection was conducted using the HSMBQ questionnaire and a digital sphygmomanometer. Data analysis was conducted using the chi-square test.  Results: The majority of respondents were middle-aged adults (41–60 years) (58.1%) and female (63.4%). Most respondents had suffered from the disease for more than 5 years (55.9%). Based on blood pressure, most respondents had controlled hypertension (53.8%). In addition, most respondents had poor self-management behavior (61.3%). Statistical tests showed a significant relationship between self-management behavior and the blood pressure status of respondents (p = 0.007), where respondents with good self-management tended to have more controlled blood pressure than respondents with poor self-management.  Implications: Strengthening self-management behavior through collaboration between health workers and religious communities has the potential to improve blood pressure control in people with hypertension.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most common diseases worldwide. Its treatment does not rely solely on medical therapy but also requires patients’ ability to perform effective self-management. This study aimed to identify factors associated with self-management among individuals with hypertension. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed. Purposive sampling was used, resulting in 93 respondents based on G*Power calculations, including individuals with blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg or <140/90 mmHg with a history of hypertension. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the chi-square test, while multivariate analysis used logistic regression. The results of the chi-square test showed significant relationships between self-management and duration of illness (p=0.011), level of knowledge (p=0.009), and social support (p=0.021). In contrast, age (p=0.218) and education level (p=0.346) were not significantly associated with self-management. Logistic regression analysis indicated that duration of illness (p=0.009; Exp(B)=4.467) and social support (p=0.006; Exp(B)=2.835) were significant factors influencing hypertension self-management. This study concludes that duration of illness, knowledge, and social support are related to hypertension self-management, whereas age and education are not. Community health workers are encouraged to involve families, social environment and develop structured self-management-focused health education programs. Further research using observational methods and additional variables is recommended.
