Abstract

Abstract

Abstract Peron Village located on the western slopes of Mount Ungaran at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level, is in the upstream area of the Bodri Watershed, a priority watershed. Despite implementing an agroforestry system that combines forestry and agricultural crops, local farmers still rely heavily on synthetic herbicides containing glyphosate for weed control. This dependence poses serious risks to water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and the health of communities that rely on spring water. This community service program aims to improve ecological literacy and practical skills in making environmentally friendly herbicides using local ingredients such as coarse salt, vinegar, and sulfur. The activity was held at the Peron Village Hall with 25 participants representing the hamlets. The program included socialization of the concept of agroforestry, the theory of natural herbicides, and the practice of making organic herbicides using 1 liter of clean water, 500 g of coarse salt, 0.75 ounces of sulfur, and 100 ml of vinegar. The results showed that participants successfully produced an effective natural herbicide that controlled weeds within two days, albeit slower than synthetic herbicides, without damaging soil structure or polluting water sources. This success opens up opportunities for further development by utilizing agroforestry waste such as coffee husks as active ingredients, supporting the zero-waste concept and increasing the economic value of local commodities. This program aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and can be replicated in other agroforestry areas in Indonesia.

Abstract

Coffee is one of Indonesia’s key commodities that plays a vital role in the national economy and serves as a livelihood for rural communities. Peron Village in Kendal Regency has strong potential in coffee production, yet its marketing remains limited to selling raw beans with low economic value. This study aims to enhance the competitiveness of coffee products through a workshop on packaging, marketing, and branding, focusing on Peronara Tea (cascara) and Kopieron product. The method applied a participatory approach involving the local community, especially the Sekar group, and invited speakers from the Kendal Office of Trade, Cooperatives, and MSMEs. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test instruments to measure participants’ understanding, and analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores, confirming improved knowledge and skills in food-safe packaging techniques, digital-based marketing strategies, and brand identity development. Therefore, the workshop effectively strengthened the capacity of Peron villagers to manage value-added coffee products. Overall, the program not only fosters more competitive and sustainable coffee-based products but also reinforces local identity, positioning them as potential economic icons of the village.

Abstract

Peron Village, located in Limbangan Subdistrict, Kendal Regency, lies on the western slopes of Mount Ungaran and forms part of the Bodri Watershed (DAS Bodri), one of the priority watersheds in Central Java. The village has developed an agroforestry system integrating coffee, sugar palm, and rice fields; however, as an upstream area, the land faces severe ecological pressures in the form of high soil erosion. This erosion threatens to reduce land productivity and increase the risk of flooding in downstream regions. A strategic intervention undertaken is the planting of flamboyant trees (D. regia) and tabebuya trees (T. rosea) as protective and shade vegetation. Both species possess strong root systems and dense canopies, making them effective in reducing erosion rates, enhancing water infiltration, and enriching the aesthetic value of the village landscape. Beyond their ecological functions, flamboyant and tabebuya trees also contribute to the community’s socio-cultural well-being by creating green spaces that foster comfort and strengthen the identity of the agroforestry landscape. Thus, the planting of flamboyant and tabebuya trees in Peron Village serves not only as a measure to mitigate erosion and flooding but also as an integrative strategy for sustaining ecological balance, economic resilience, and social cohesion in the buffer zone of the Bodri Watershed.   Keywords: Bodri Watershed; Agroforestry; Flood Mitigation; Upstream Greening; Landscape Aesthetics
