Abstract

Information related to osteology plays a vital role in support ecomorphology and phylogenetic relationship analysis in fish. This study aimed to describe the comparative morphology of the vertebral column between Tor tambroides (Bleeker, 1854) and Tor tambra (Valenciennes 1842). Samples of Tor tambroides and Tor tambra were obtained from fish traders in the Tangse River area of Pidie Regency and Sampoinet River area, Aceh Jaya Regency, Aceh Province. Vertebral column preparation consists of five steps: muscles and scales separation, immersion in a formaldehyde solution, drying, morphometric measurements, photographing and image editing, and identification of terminology. The results showed that there are morphological differences between Tor tambroides and Tor tambra vertebral column, particularly in the axial vertebrae, posterior vertebrae caudales, and urostylus regions. The pleural costae of Tor tambroides have a posterior curve with the left and right sides interlocking. The lateral Tor tambroides process tends to curve posteriorly, while the Tor tambra tends to round up parallel to the dorsal costae. Tor tambroides tend to have stronger ligaments marked by the absence of a foramen between the hypural. Morphometrically, Tor tambroides tend to have higher centrum ratios (length, width, and height), neural spine, haemalis spine, and costae compared to Tor tambra. The significant difference in morphometric results in observed the axial vertebrae and the posterior vertebrae caudales region. Further research related to the correlation of vertebral column morphology with the environmental condition of these fish is still necessary.

Abstract

Bireuen Regency, located on the eastern coast of Aceh, is rich in natural resources, particularly in marine fisheries. Among these, mantis shrimp are a notable resource, though their population dynamics remain undocumented. Currently, mantis shrimp are considered bycatch by local fishermen, with most being discarded. To address this gap, this study aimed to identify and analyze the morphology and composition of mantis shrimp in the waters of Bireuen Regency. The research was conducted from October 2024 in Gandapura District, employing purposive random sampling at three designated sites. The species identified was Harpiosquilla raphidea. Morphological measurements revealed six body segments: head length (PK), head width (LK), body length (PB), body width (LB), tail length (PE), and tail width (LE). Results indicated that mantis shrimp constituted 50% of the catch, followed by tiger shrimp (25%) and kelong shrimp (25%). The length-weight relationship of mantis shrimp showed a b-value of <3, signifying negative allometry, where growth in length outpaces growth in weight. These findings provide baseline data for further studies on mantis shrimp populations and their potential utilization in sustainable fisheries.

Abstract

The snapper species Lutjanus gibbus (L. gibbus) is commonly found in coastal areas characterized by coral reefs and clear water, while Lutjanus johnii (L. johnii) resides in mangrove waters with murky conditions and strong currents. The habitat plays a crucial role in influencing body shape and ossification patterns in fish. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the differences in the cranial bone morphology between the two Lutjanus fish species that resided in contrasting habitats. The fish samples were collected from local fishermen operating in the waters of Pulo Aceh, Aceh Besar, Indonesia. Following capture, the fish were transported and landed at Lampulo Fishing Port in Banda Aceh for further analysis. For each species, a total of 5 fish samples were randomly selected, and thorough cleaning of scales and muscles was performed before the drying of the bones. These dried cranial bones were then photographed, edited, and subjected to detailed analysis. The study showed that, of the 23 observed skull bone characters, 15 characters showed the differences in the cranial bones of the two snapper species, including the pre-ethmoidal, ethmoidal lateralis, prefrontal, supraorbital, nasal, ethmoidal, sphenoticum, crista occipital, lacrimal, inter-opercular, opercular, preopercular premaxilla, endopterygoideum, and hyomandibular. Significant differences were observed in the bones composing the eyes, nose, jaws, and ventral region of the head. In the mangrove snapper (L. johnii), the bones associated with the eyes (orbitospenoidal, supraorbital, and prefrontal) were less developed, while those related to the nose (nasal, ethmoidal, ethmoidal lateralis, pre-ethmoidal) showed well-developed characteristics. The coral snapper L. gibbus displayed a relatively small but thicker premaxilla bone in the jaw region, along with smaller bones in the ventral head area. Keywords:OsteologyMorphologyEcomorphologyOsteocraniumMaxillare

Abstract

The whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is a prominent species in global aquaculture due to its resilience to environmental fluctuations and high growth potential. The success of the larval phase is critically determined by feed quality and the stability of the culture environment. This study comparatively evaluated the efficacy of various feed types on the performance of Litopenaeus vannamei postlarvae. A comparison was made between live, frozen, and preserved natural feed (Artemia sp.) and formulated pellet feed in terms of growth, survival rate, and Vibrio bacteria abundance. The results highlighted that frozen Artemia sp. (P2) was significantly superior to other treatments. Postlarvae fed frozen Artemia sp. exhibited the highest growth (length and absolute weight) and survival rate, reaching 78.67%, significantly surpassing the pellet-fed group (K1) with a survival rate of only 60.67%. Furthermore, the Vibrio bacteria abundance in the frozen Artemia sp. fed group was also relatively low compared to the pellet-fed group (13.33 CFU mL⁻¹). Although live and preserved Artemia sp. yielded better results than pellet feed, frozen Artemia sp. remains the most effective feed choice for optimizing early-stage L. vannamei aquaculture. Abstract
