Abstract

The integration of digital media into language learning has expanded opportunities for EFL learners to practice speaking in more authentic, creative and self-directed ways, particularly through student-created digital content (SCDC) that enables learners to produce and share their own speaking performances. Public speaking remains a persistent challenge for Indonesian EFL college students, who often experience anxiety, limited exposure, and traditional instruction that restricts authentic speaking practice. This study explores the learning pathways of Indonesian EFL college students by examining their experiences, challenges, and growth while creating digital speaking content for public speaking practice. This study employed a qualitative case study design, involving nine English education students enrolled in a semester-long public speaking course. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals, analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2017) thematic analysis framework, grounded in Constructivist Learning Theory, the Affective Filter Hypothesis, and Self-Determination Theory. The findings reveal that students experienced SCDC as meaningful, empowering, and transformative, as it allowed personal expression and greater control over learning. While students confronted linguistic, technical, and psychological challenges, these difficulties became opportunities for constructive practice, reflection, and development. This study also shows multidimensional growth, categorized into linguistic, digital, motivational, and identity development. Overall, this study concludes that SCDC functions not only as a speaking task but also as a holistic learning pathway that connects experiences, challenges and growth into a transformative learning process. Finally, this study provides significant implications for language teaching and learning.

Abstract

Discourse markers (DMs) play a pivotal role in teacher talk since they not only maintain the classroom interaction but also promote the learning efficiency. This article reports on a study aimed at investigating and examining features and functions of discourse markers used by an EFL teacher. This is a descriptive qualitative study within the frame of pragmatics. The data were derived from audio-video recordings gathered through direct observation. The audio-video recordings were transcribed and analyzed afterwards. In analyzing the data, Brinton’s (2008) framework of DM features was employed to figure out the DM features and the taxonomy of pragmatic functions of DMs proposed by Fung and Carter (2007) was used to examine the functions of DMs. This study spotlights two major findings. Firstly, the discourse markers found are in the form of adverbs, conjunctions, lexical phrases, and fillers, with the five most frequent DMs used are ‘OK’, ‘so’, ‘and then’, ‘now’, ‘and ‘and’. Secondly, the discourse markers perform pragmatic functions, namely interpersonal function (checking progress, partitioning information, replaying to elicitors, seeking affirmation, and signifying acknowledgement), referential function (marking results or consequences), structural function (opening the topic/subject or adjusting the lecture mode, maintaining the students’ attention, and smoothing shifts between activities), and cognitive function (denoting the thinking process). In short, the findings of this study might help to boost awareness of the pragmatic discourse markers for EFL teachers and learners.

Abstract

This study focuses on improving students' speaking ability through YouTube videos of Nas Daily channel, specifically the students (henceforth, the cadets) of Politeknik Bumi Akpelni studying in the fourth semester. There are many graduates in Marine Mechanical Engineering Technology (TRPK) who often receive comments from companies that there are still many TRPK cadets that are less active despite being in the world of work. The international level requires active English, especially during interviews and communication with seafarers from different countries on board. This study aims to explore the importance of using Nas's daily YouTube videos to boost students' speaking skills. This study employs an experimental design applying preliminary and predomination in each group. The population consists of fourth-semester interns and the sample is class TRPK A as the preliminary group and TRPK B as a predomination group consisting of 22 interns in each group. The first meeting is an advance-test for both groups. The researchers give the treatment during the second and third encounters, and so on. Nas daily YouTube videos are used for the preliminary group while the predomination group is treated with conventional methods. The last meeting was an end-test of the preliminary and predomination groups. The research tools used consists of conducting a simple dialogue with the subjects they have learned. Learners' speaking ability is assessed based on five aspects of speaking skills, namely articulation, grammar or morphology, vocabulary or the stock of words, chapters and fluency. The results show that the average advance-test scores for the preliminary and predomination groups are 48.60 and 44.26. End-test mean scores for the preliminary and predomination groups are 65.30 and 55.20. The average score of each of the 5 aspects of speaking also increased after using Nas Daily YouTube Videos for the preliminary group. The significance of this study is found by applying the t-test method. After carrying out the significance test, the t-count value (2.96) is higher than the t-table (1.76). This means that a significant difference in results between cadets’ speaking skills after being treated using the Nas Daily YouTube Video and using the conventional method of the fourth-semester cadets of Marine Mechanical Engineering Technology exists. This study concludes that cadets’ speaking skills improve well through activities using Nas Daily YouTube Video. They are more confident and have easy access anytime, anywhere to learn and to speak English. Besides, they also learn unique things from Nas' videos on YouTube.

Abstract

In the realm of political communication, the ability to convey messages effectively in international forums is crucial for leaders to shape their public image and perception. Fillers, often dismissed as marks of speech disfluency, can serve strategic functions in managing communication flow and engaging listeners. Some studies investigated the use of fillers in spoken communication, but none has focused on Indonesian political leaders. This article reports on a study that aims to examine the types and functions of fillers as communication strategies uttered by Prabowo Subianto in his interview as president-elect at the Qatar Economic Forum. This is a qualitative study that employs a conversation analysis. The data were collected from the interview video derived from YouTube which were then transcribed. The transcription was analyzed by using Rose’s (1998) theory of types of fillers and Stenstrom’s (1994) taxonomy of functions of fillers. This study reveals two major findings. First, in terms of the types of fillers, the results show that Prabowo uttered both unlexicalized and lexicalized filled pauses, dominated by lexicalized fillers. However, the unlexicalized filler “uh” was uttered most frequently. These results indicate that Prabowo tended to use both lexeme and non-lexeme words to fill the pauses. In terms of the functions of fillers, the findings show that Prabowo strategically used fillers as hesitating, time-creating, empathizing, mitigating, and editing term. He produced fillers most frequently for hesitating, which signifies that he uttered fillers to hesitate and gain more time to think of what to say next. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how political leaders utilize fillers to enhance communication effectiveness, especially in high-stakes international settings. Finally, this study provides some pedagogical implications for teaching speaking to learners of English as a foreign language.

Abstract

Anxiety significantly impacts students' language learning processes, particularly influencing their ability to perform effectively in speaking activities. This study aims to determine the correlation between students' anxiety and their speaking performance at SMA Negeri 1 Kradenan, involving a sample of 72 eleventh-grade students. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing Pearson correlation analysis to assess the data. The Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale questionnaire, adapted from Horwitz et al. (1995), was used to measure anxiety levels, while speaking performance scores were collected from teachers as secondary data. The results showed a statistically significant negative correlation (r = -0.926, p < 0.05). These findings indicate a strong negative correlation, suggesting that higher anxiety levels are associated with lower speaking performance. To address these challenges, educators must create a supportive learning environment that fosters student confidence. Based on the study's findings, it is recommended that educators implement effective strategies to reduce anxiety, such as relaxation techniques and small group speaking practices. These approaches can help improve students' confidence and enhance their speaking performance, leading to a more positive language learning experience. By addressing anxiety, educators can significantly enhance students' engagement and success in language learning.
