Abstract

The transformation of learning media in elementary schools has undergone a significant evolution, moving from a reliance on physical props to the utilization of immersive technologies. This review article aims to analyze this paradigm shift, starting from the use of static visual media to the adoption of Augmented Reality (AR). Through a literature review of various recent studies, the analysis focuses on how interactive digital platforms and gamification act as a transitional bridge before reaching the stage of AR technology, which is capable of visualizing abstract concepts in real-time. The analysis reveals that the shift to AR does not only replace the role of physical props in terms of cost and space efficiency but also provides a superior impact on enhancing student engagement, reducing cognitive load, and fostering deeper conceptual understanding. This review concludes that digital transformation in elementary schools is a crucial step in creating an adaptive and futuristic learning environment for Generation Alpha.

Abstract

The post-pandemic integration of technology in education has accelerated the transformation of teaching materials from print to digital formats. This study aims to provide a narrative review of current trends in the development of electronic modules (E-Modules) in science education, specifically focusing on fostering 21st-century skills. By analyzing recent literature (2021–2025), this review identifies a shift from mere content digitalization to the creation of complex interactive media. Key findings indicate that: (1) Current E-Module development is dominated by the integration of active pedagogical models, particularly Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approaches; (2) There is a distinctive trend of merging digital technology with local wisdom (Ethnoscience) to enhance learning relevance; and (3) The primary learning outcomes targeted are critical thinking, science literacy, and problem-solving skills. This review concludes that modern E-Modules no longer function solely as passive reading resources but as interactive learning environments that effectively bridge scientific conceptual understanding with future competency demands.

Abstract

Gamification has emerged as a transformative pedagogical approach in science and technology education. This narrative review explores current implementation trends and educator perspectives by analyzing 28 selected articles published between 2016 and 2024. The study identifies key technological trends, including the integration of Virtual Reality (VR), game-based physics simulations, and Education 4.0 tools. The findings indicate that gamification significantly enhances student motivation, academic achievement, and engagement in complex scientific subjects. Furthermore, the review highlights educator perspectives, revealing that while teachers generally perceive gamification as a potent methodology, its adoption is often hindered by barriers such as limited digital self-efficacy, technical constraints, and the need for specialized training. The synthesis suggests that a successful gamified ecosystem requires a balance between immersive technology and robust pedagogical support. This review provides valuable insights for educators and policymakers seeking to integrate gamified strategies into STEM curricula to foster 21st-century skills.

Abstract

This literature review comprehensively examines the evolution of Project-Based Learning (PBL) approaches within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and their impact on 21st Century Skills from 2011 to 2021. Analyzing 40 scholarly articles, the study traces pedagogical shifts and trends in PBL implementation across diverse STEM contexts. Initial findings (2011-2015) highlighted a foundational focus on defining STEM integration and early explorations of PBL methodologies. Progressing into 2016-2021, the literature reveals a significant increase in the sophistication of PBL-STEM, marked by greater technology adoption (e.g., robotics, virtual laboratories) and explicit emphasis on fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and digital literacy. This review underscores a clear trend towards authentic, interdisciplinary PBL experiences designed to prepare students for real-world challenges. It concludes that PBL consistently acts as a robust pedagogical framework within STEM education, effectively cultivating essential 21st Century Skills for future academic and professional success.

Abstract

The Industry 4.0 era demands graduates possessing 4C competencies, specifically critical and creative thinking skills. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education is considered the most relevant approach to addressing these challenges. This study aims to provide a narrative review of the transformation of STEM education in stimulating students' higher-order thinking skills, based on literature published between 2015 and 2020. Through an analysis of selected journal articles, this study identifies a paradigm shift in learning from conventional methods toward the integration of technology and inquiry pedagogy. The key findings indicate that the use of immersive technologies, such as virtual laboratories and interactive multimedia, has proven effective in visualizing abstract concepts (particularly in Physics), thereby directly enhancing student creativity. Furthermore, the integration of learning models such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) within the STEM framework provides the necessary scaffolding to train critical thinking dispositions. This article concludes that the transformation of STEM education relies not merely on technology adoption, but on the synergy between digital tools and problem-centered instructional design.

Abstract

This narrative review synthesizes recent literature to explore the significant role of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) as a catalyst for innovation through the development of creative thinking among students. Drawing from a comprehensive review of studies, this paper examines how PBL frameworks, by engaging learners in authentic, complex problem-solving and hands-on project creation, inherently foster environments conducive to divergent thinking, novel idea generation, and critical problem analysis. We analyze the pedagogical mechanisms within PjBL, such as collaboration, inquiry-based learning, and iterative design, that contribute to enhancing students' creative abilities across various educational levels and disciplines, including STEM and engineering. Furthermore, the review discusses the documented effectiveness of PjBL in improving not only creative thinking skills but also related competencies like critical thinking and self-efficacy, which are vital for innovation. The findings underscore PjBL's potential to equip students with the necessary cognitive tools to navigate and contribute creatively to an ever-evolving world. This review aims to consolidate current understanding and highlight future research directions for optimizing PjBL implementation to maximize its impact on fostering innovation-driven creative thinking.
