Abstract

Fadoro Lauru Village, Hiliduho District, Nias Regency, has significant agricultural potential, but it has not been optimally utilized for the development of high-value horticultural commodities such as chili peppers (Capsicum annuum L.). A chili cultivation outreach activity conducted by student interns from the Agrotechnology Study Program at Nias University aimed to improve the community's technical knowledge, motivate productive land management, and encourage the adoption of sustainable agricultural innovations. The implementation method consisted of three stages: (1) interactive presentation of chili cultivation materials, (2) participatory discussions to explore farmers' experiences and challenges, and (3) distribution of chili seeds as a direct implementation step. The results of the activity demonstrated high community enthusiasm, increased technical understanding, and readiness to implement chili cultivation practices independently. This activity also strengthened the synergy between students, the village government, and the community as a foundation for sustainable local agricultural development.

Abstract

Tanaman jagung pakan (Zea mays L.) merupakan komoditas strategis yang berperan penting sebagai bahan baku utama industri pakan ternak di Indonesia. Peningkatan kebutuhan jagung pakan perlu diimbangi dengan upaya menjaga produktivitas tanaman dari gangguan organisme pengganggu tanaman, terutama hama. Artikel ini bertujuan menganalisis tingkat kerusakan tanaman jagung pakan akibat serangan hama pada berbagai fase pertumbuhan tanaman. Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan metode kajian pustaka (literature review) dengan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif melalui penelaahan berbagai jurnal nasional dan internasional, buku ilmiah, serta hasil penelitian terdahulu yang relevan. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat kerusakan tanaman berbeda pada setiap fase pertumbuhan. Fase vegetatif awal merupakan fase yang paling rentan terhadap serangan hama karena jaringan tanaman masih muda dan lunak. Hama utama yang menyebabkan kerusakan adalah ulat grayak (Spodoptera frugiperda), penggerek batang (Ostrinia furnacalis), dan ulat tongkol (Helicoverpa armigera). Pada fase vegetatif lanjut, kerusakan masih tergolong tinggi dan berdampak terhadap penurunan luas daun efektif. Sementara itu, pada fase generatif, serangan hama lebih banyak merusak organ reproduktif seperti tongkol dan biji sehingga menurunkan kualitas dan kuantitas hasil panen. Informasi mengenai tingkat kerusakan pada setiap fase pertumbuhan dapat digunakan sebagai dasar dalam menentukan strategi pengendalian hama terpadu yang tepat, efektif, dan berkelanjutan guna meminimalkan kehilangan hasil serta meningkatkan produktivitas jagung pakan.

Abstract

Sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata Sturt.) is a horticultural commodity with high economic value; however, its productivity remains relatively low due to environmental stress and weed competition. Organic mulch is an environmentally friendly technology that can enhance crop productivity, yet the optimal mulch thickness for sweet corn cultivation has not been well established. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of organic mulch thickness on the growth and yield of sweet corn and to determine the optimal mulch thickness. The experiment was conducted using a non-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four levels of rice straw mulch thickness: M0 (no mulch, 0 cm), M1 (3 cm), M2 (6 cm), and M3 (9 cm). Each treatment was replicated six times. The observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, husked ear weight, unhusked ear weight, and number of kernel rows per ear. The results showed that organic mulch thickness significantly affected all observed parameters. Application of rice straw mulch at a thickness of 6–9 cm effectively improved the growth and yield of sweet corn, with 9 cm being optimal for ear weight and 6 cm being optimal for the number of kernel rows.
