Abstract

ABSTRACT Tonics are agents that can stimulate body activity, thereby delaying feelings of fatigue, lethargy, and exhaustion. This study aimed to determine the ability of butterfly pea flower infusion to increase swimming time and its potential effect on the sleep duration of mice, as well as to evaluate the relationship between dose variation and tonic effects. Butterfly pea flower contains secondary metabolites such as alkaloids and flavonoids, which are known to produce tonic effects. This experimental study used 25 mice as test animals, divided into five groups. The test groups consisted of a negative control (distilled water), a positive control (caffeine 100 mg), and butterfly pea flower infusion at doses of 10%, 20%, and 40%. The results showed that butterfly pea flower infusion exhibited tonic effects in both the natatory exhaustion and sleep induction methods. The 10% dose produced tonic effects of 38.99% ± 10.34% in the natatory exhaustion method and 17.72% ± 6.13% in the sleep induction method. The 20% dose resulted in tonic effects of 52.82% ± 7.39% and 39.38% ± 6.22%, respectively. The 40% dose produced the greatest tonic effect, with values of 79.53% ± 3.82% in the natatory exhaustion method and 59.55% ± 1.72% in the sleep induction method. Abstract

Excessive exposure to sunlight can cause the formation of free radicals that can damage skin tissue, thus requiring natural antioxidants. The use of natural ingredients as a source of antioxidants in the form of topical preparations is a potential alternative. This study aims to formulate ethanol extract of yakon leaves (Smallanthus sonchifolius) into a face toner formulation and evaluate its physical quality, antioxidant activity, and to determine the optimal concentration of the face toner formulation that can inhibit free radicals. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method with 70% ethanol, then formulated into face toner with different concentrations, namely 1%, 2%, and 3%. After that, physical quality evaluation was carried out in the form of organoleptic tests, pH tests, homogeneity tests, and viscosity tests. Antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH method and measured using UV-Vis spectroscopy at a wavelength of 520 nm. The results showed that all formulas met the physical quality test standards and had antioxidant activity at concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3% with IC50 values of 95.91, 93.58, and 91.70, respectively, all of which were classified as strong. while the negative control formula without extract had a value of 167 (weak category), and the positive control quercetin had a value of 9.95 (very strong category).

Abstract

Efektivitas penyembuhan luka dievaluasi berdasarkan nilai Area Under Curve (AUC) dan persentase daya penyembuhan luka (%DPL).

Abstract

Abstract

Exposure to free radicals and UV radiation can damage the skin, requiring a preparation with antioxidant activity and UV protection. Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) contains flavonoid and phenolic compounds with antioxidant potential. Objective: This study determined the physical stability, antioxidant activity, and SPF value of bitter melon extract serum in vitro. Methods: Bitter melon fruit was extracted by maceration with 70% ethanol and formulated into four formulas: F0 (base) and F1, F2, F3 (extract concentrations 2%, 4%, 6%). Physical quality (organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, adhesion) was evaluated, followed by an accelerated cycling test for six cycles. Antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH with IC50 from linear regression, and SPF was determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry (Mansur method, 290-320 nm). Results: All formulas met physical quality requirements and remained homogeneous after stability testing. IC50 values of F0-F3 were 112.64, 50.45, 43.37, and 41.38 ppm, compared with quercetin (26.84 ppm) and a commercial serum control (26.04 ppm). SPF values were 5.33, 7.552, 8.174, and 8.373, respectively. Conclusion: Bitter melon extract serum can be formulated as a physically stable preparation with antioxidant activity and UV protection, with F3 showing the highest antioxidant activity and SPF value.
