Abstract

The existence of English major in Southwest Papua is still become a big project for universities in improving the number of students to choose English major. Year by year, the new students who take this major is decreased. This is become the big reason to conduct this research that aims to discover the Papuan high school students' perceptions and attitudes towards English majors. The case study design was used to describe this case. This research involved five schools in Sorong and Raja Ampat Regency. The sample of this research was 50 Papuan high school students’ taken from the five schools that participated. In collecting the data, the research used interviews and attitude questionnaires. The result regarding the students' perceptions is that most Papuan students think English is confusing and complex. It is because of the teaching method or strategy that the teacher considers monotone and boring. The pedagogical competence of an English teacher also influences this student's opinion. As an impact, fewer want to pursue English-related careers, like educators or tourism jobs. Most want to become civil servants after graduating from senior high school. Regarding the student's attitude, 86% of respondents have a negative attitude towards the English major. The significant cause is that they previously had no interest or motivation in learning English. As an impact, most of them do not want to choose English as their major at the university level.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by English Education students at Universitas Pendidikan Muhammadiyah Sorong due to deficiencies in foundational English skills, focusing on their confidence and classroom management during teaching practicums. The research has three primary objectives: to identify specific challenges, analyze the impact of these deficiencies on students' confidence and classroom management abilities, and propose effective interventions. Utilizing a quantitative research design, data were collected from sixth-semester students through structured surveys and self-report questionnaires, which assessed perceived challenges, confidence levels, and classroom management skills. The findings revealed significant difficulties in vocabulary (72%), grammar (65%), pronunciation (58%), listening comprehension (60%), and speaking fluency (70%), compounded by limited exposure to English-speaking environments. A strong correlation was found between low English proficiency and decreased self-confidence, with 68% of respondents feeling unprepared to manage classrooms effectively. To address these challenges, the study proposes targeted interventions, including enhanced language support programs, peer mentoring, simulation activities, regular feedback mechanisms, and workshops on classroom management. These recommendations aim to improve the teaching practicum experience for English Education students, ultimately fostering their professional development and effectiveness as future educators.

Abstract

Early Childhood Education is a crucial foundation for a child's holistic development. This sector faces various challenges, including diverse individual needs, limited resources, and teacher qualifications. With the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the question arises whether this technology can be an effective solution to overcome these obstacles. This journal explores the potential of AI in addressing ECE challenges, analysing both the opportunities and risks involved. We discuss how AI can support personalized learning, enhance accessibility, and alleviate the workload of educators. However, we also emphasize the importance of maintaining human interaction, data ethics, and mitigating bias. This journal concludes that while AI holds significant promise as a supportive tool, its implementation must be carried out carefully, integrated thoughtfully, and always prioritize the holistic development of the child.
