Abstract

There are some reasons that appeal me to do research on contemporary linguists’ contributions to Sībawaih’s al-Kitâb. As a pioneer on Arabic linguistics book, al-Kitâb has been the starting point for the classic linguists to study linguistics phenomena. And so are the contemporary linguists. For the later, they place the book in the first raw of references, be it by taking instant benefits from the fundamentals it contains or by keen reading on it. In fact, some efforts conducted by the linguists after Sībawaih can be regarded to as attempts to comprehend his theories, as well as to explain aspects which are still ambiguous to some others. This is what can be understood from the abundance varieties of works produced by later linguists: they criticize the book; they give commentaries, they give preliminary fundaments on further readings on it; they study on the theories; they explain the sources; and they trigger to study the construct of Sībawaih’s thoughts.  From these various studies, even if they refer to the same book (al-Kitâb), it can be grasped that the linguist do not meet an agreement one and others in comprehending Sībawaih’s words. In this piece of paper, I try to describe what contemporary linguists do with the al-Kitāb, and how the link it to their theories. After all, this can be regarded as their contributions to the book in developing linguistics theories in a wider context.

Abstract

Kitab Safînah al-Najâh, together with other classical Arabic books can explain how Indonesian Muslims live their lives in regard with religious aspects. The book since long has been widely thought in most of traditional Islamic education institutions (pesantren) in Indonesia for it is considered relatively concise but comprehensive, covering basic laws of daily religious activities. The conciseness of the book, however, may lead to problems of misinterpretation. The biggest assumption of this regard relies on the use of complex broken verbs, called in Arabic as Fi'il Ṡulâṡi Mazîd, which refer to different meanings. This article aims at analysing the meanings that may come from the use of Fi'il Ṡulâṡi Mazîd in the book Safinah al-Naja from the perspective of morpho-semantic. It is found 55 patterns of Fi'il Ṡulâṡi Mazîd. From this amounts, there are 26 verbs with additional one character (Mazîd bi harfin), 25 verbs with additional two characters, and 4 verbs with additional three characters. Some of these verbs come with various meanings

Abstract

When the Arabs set grammar, the Syriac linguists preceded them several centuries in establishing rules towards them. Perhaps one issue is the one taken by the Arab linguists on Syriac, but the issue of dividing the word into three sections only: name, action, and character. The advanced Arab grammarians handed over this issue from the first day, and do not argue with it. Those who denied this issue and corrected the mistake are the modern European linguists who began to set rules for their languages after the Arabs for hundreds of years. For example, in French, divide the word into nine sections. The researcher tries to present this research from three centuries and is the advanced and the late and contemporaries. The researcher begins with the concept of the word and then divides it into the Arabic linguists.

Abstract

Abstract

Prophetic Hadits has been served as the secondary source for inducting Arabic grammar (Iim al-Nahwu) next to the Qur'an. It was Ibnu Malik the first grammarian who developed a concept of employing Hadith in postulating his theories. Even though it is not arguable that there had been grammarians who had done so prior to him, attentions that had been payed to Hadits by those grammarians seemed to be not in balance with Hadith which actually has been the most loquence language for the Arabs. There were three stands of grammarians upon the Hadits: Most grammarians refused Hadits and preferred ancient Arabic poetry more than Hadits, some others openly took it into account, and the rest took the middle position. This article aims at describing lbnu Maliks thoughts on the authority of Hadits as a source of Nahwu. He tried to prove that Hadits could, and still, play authoritative role in postulating theories of Nahwu. Key Words: Ibnu Malik, Nahwu, Hadith, Language

Design/ methods/approach: In this study, a descriptive qualitative approach is used to examine how Arabic syntax influences the interpretation of Quranic legal verses and the formulation of Sharia law. It includes an extensive literature review and textual analysis of primary texts like the Quran and Hadith, as well as secondary sources in the fields of fiqh and Arabic language. The research primarily relies on qualitative data, employing content analysis to identify themes and patterns in the internalization of Arabic syntax by Islamic scholars, enhancing our understanding of its impact on legal interpretations in Islamic jurisprudence. These syntactic elements often lead to diverse interpretations, impacting the formulation of Islamic law across different schools of thought. Research implications:  One of the key contributions of this research is the demonstration of how Arabic syntax serves as more than a linguistic tool; it is a critical component in the hermeneutics of Islamic law. This insight is pivotal for scholars, legal practitioners, and students of Islamic studies, offering a deeper appreciation of the complexity involved in interpreting sacred texts.

Abstract

Arabic has its origins in the history of writing. This study aims to gather sufficient information about the history of Arabic writing and the influence of writing on the understanding of the writing. This research method is a literature study that collects some previous research to discuss the history of Arabic writing and answer what influence writing has on the understanding of the writing. The results showed that there are many opinions about the origin of the birth of Arabic script. At the time of the Prophet of Allah, the development of writing began in the 2nd year, the Prophet taught writing for prisoners who wanted to be released without having to pay a ransom. Arab society already has its own writing. Although still simple with a classical kufic form that does not have vowel markers and consonant differentiators. And also still do not know sentence markers such as dots, commas, or decorations in writing. So the arrival of the Qur'an made the development of Arabic writing better. Arabic writing is not free from mistakes. Errors in writing greatly affect reading comprehension, because even a single letter can change the meaning of reading. The comprehension of Arabic writing depends on knowledge of Arabic vocabulary and grammar.
