Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the implementation of the Insurance and Actuarial Olympiad in Timor-Leste as a non-formal educational initiative to enhance risk literacy and support sustainable development. It employed a descriptive case study design with a non-experimental quantitative approach and secondary data analysis. The data comprised all 105 registration records from the 2025 Timor-Leste Insurance and Actuarial Olympiad. Descriptive analysis was conducted based on participants’ school origins, geographical distribution, and selected competition fields. The results showed that 96 registrants (91.4%) were from Timor-Leste, while nine (8.6%) were from Indonesia. Most registrants were concentrated in Baucau, with 48 participants (45.7%), and Dili, with 27 participants (25.7%). The Insurance category was selected by 62 participants (59.0%), whereas 43 participants (41.0%) selected the Actuarial category. These findings indicate the program’s geographical reach and participants’ initial interest but do not demonstrate an improvement in risk literacy. The Olympiad could be developed into a continuous learning program through preparatory materials, case-based questions, feedback, and pre- and post-event evaluations using validated bilingual instruments.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Financing constraints remain a major barrier to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly when public budgets cannot fully meet investment needs for climate action, environmental protection, and social development. This study examines the role of green finance in advancing the SDGs and proposes an implementation framework for Indonesia. An integrative literature review was conducted using 20 scholarly publications and policy documents issued between 2019 and 2026. The sources were thematically analysed according to financing instruments, contribution pathways, governance, and implementation risks. The synthesis shows that green finance contributes by mobilising capital for clean energy and sustainable infrastructure, integrating environmental risk into financial decisions, establishing standards through taxonomies and disclosure, and expanding instruments such as green bonds, transition finance, and impact investment. Direct contributions primarily relate to SDGs 7, 9, 11, 12, and 13, while indirect effects extend to poverty reduction, decent work, health, clean water, and ecosystem protection. Effectiveness is constrained by greenwashing, inconsistent classifications, limited data quality, transaction costs, and the potential exclusion of small enterprises. In Indonesia, implementation requires alignment with the Indonesia Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance, stronger disclosure and impact measurement, blended finance, and capacity development. Green finance can become an effective SDG accelerator when environmental and social additionality is verifiable and financial prudence is maintained.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Reinsurance is essential for risk exposure sharing, capital protection, and maintaining the ability of insurance companies to fulfill their obligations when facing large claims. Strengthening retention capacity and financial resilience is also relevant to insurance sustainability because continuous risk protection contributes to economic and social resilience. Objective: This study aims to analyze the role of reinsurance in improving retention capacity and financial resilience and to formulate its implications for insurance company sustainability through a case study of PT Reasuransi. Methods: This study employed a descriptive qualitative case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 purposively selected informants, three months of limited participant observation, and company documents and financial data from 2021–2024. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, initial coding, thematic categorization, matrix presentation, and conclusion verification. Data validity was strengthened through triangulation of interviews, observations, and documents, while analytical consistency was maintained through coding procedures and thematic matrices. Numerical data were analyzed descriptively without causal testing. Results: A total of 80% of informants considered reinsurance to play an important role in financial stability, while 20% emphasized the role of excess of loss protection. The client retention ratio increased from 33.0% in 2021 to 42.0% in 2024, representing a 9.0 percentage-point increase. During the same period, the Risk-Based Capital (RBC) ratio increased from 125.4% to 132.8%, liquidity increased from 115.3% to 119.4%, and equity increased from IDR 2,200 billion to IDR 2,525 billion. Thematic analysis identified risk diversification, risk transfer, capital relief, portfolio stability, regulation, and reinsurer partnerships as key themes. Conclusion: Reinsurance functions as a mechanism for strengthening capacity and providing financial buffers; however, the case study evidence does not establish a causal relationship. Therefore, retention policies should integrate capital adequacy, claims experience, risk tolerance limits, and sustainability risks to ensure the long-term availability of insurance protection. Keywords: reinsurance; retention capacity; financial resilience; sustainability; insurance company.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Generation Z makes frequent financial and consumption decisions through digital platforms while facing climate risks, persuasive marketing, pay-later services, and environmental claims of varying credibility. This article examines how green financial literacy education can help Generation Z align financial well-being with sustainable lifestyles. An integrative literature review was conducted using scientific publications and policy documents issued mainly between 2019 and 2026. The synthesis links financial knowledge, sustainable-finance concepts, critical evaluation of environmental claims, budgeting, consumption, saving, investment, and risk protection. The findings indicate that effective education should move beyond conceptual knowledge. It must use contextual cases, simulations, personal action plans, digital nudges, and follow-up reflection so participants can assess affordability, risk, total life-cycle cost, and environmental impact simultaneously. A five-stage program is proposed: diagnosis, concept building, experiential practice, commitment to action, and evaluation. Suggested outcomes include improved knowledge, better scenario-based decisions, a greener personal budget, verified product selection, and consistent behavior after the program. The framework also emphasizes consumer protection and safeguards against greenwashing, impulsive digital spending, exclusion, and the assumption that every product labelled green is financially appropriate. Because this study does not report an implemented intervention, its contribution is a literature-based educational design that can be tested by universities and community partners. Keywords: green financial literacy, Generation Z, financial education, sustainable lifestyle, green finance, consumer behavior
