Abstract

Maritime safety is the top priority when vessels enter narrow channels, which carry a high risk of accidents. Rule 9 COLREG 1972 serves as an important guideline, and this study analyzes its implementation on the Tirta Samudra XXXVIII – a Gen-eral Cargo vessel owned by PT. USDA SEROJA JAYA, operating on routes across Indonesia through narrow channels in Surabaya and Central Kalimantan. This re-search uses a qualitative method with data collection techniques including observa-tion, interviews, and document studies. The results show that the implementation of the rules has been well-executed: maintaining the vessel’s position on the starboard side of the channel using radar, AIS, GPS, and echo sounder; adjusting speed; con-ducting continuous observations; and communicating in accordance with regula-tions. A safety briefing is always conducted before entering the channel to anticipate potential hazards. The challenges faced include external factors (high traffic density, small vessels/fishermen obstructing the route, unfavorable weather/sea conditions) and internal factors (over-reliance on automated systems, suboptimal coordination, and varying levels of understanding among the crew). To address these issues, comprehensive measures have been taken: for external factors, the vessel monitors information from BMKG (Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Ge-ophysics), tide tables, and VTS (Vessel Traffic Service); reduces speed and com-municates with other vessels during heavy traffic; and uses VHF communication and evasive maneuvers when there are obstructions. For internal factors, the com-pany conducts regular training, emergency simulations, briefings, and evaluations; updates navigation equipment; and implements a closed communication system with clear roles.

Abstract

Cargo handling is a core operational activity in ports that directly affects berth time efficiency and vessel departure punctuality, as any delay in this process will impact the overall sailing schedule. This study aims to analyze the influence of cargo handling operations and passenger boarding on the departure punctuality of the passenger vessel KM Bukit Siguntang and to formulate strategic operational recommendations to improve departure time performance. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, field observations during Voyage 16.2025, and operational documentation including ETA, ETD, and actual ATD records. Informants consist of ship crews and port operational personnel. Data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the impact of delays is proportional to berth duration; therefore, shorter port stays carry a higher risk of operational time loss. The study recommends the implementation of proportional buffer time, stricter boarding cut-off policies, optimized cargo planning, improved equipment readiness, and the establishment of a monitoring and evaluation system based on key performance indicators to enhance vessel departure punctuality.

Abstract

This qualitative research examines the integration of industry professional expertise within maritime engineering education through comprehensive analysis of perspectives from four maritime industry professionals and four academic educators. The study employs descriptive analytical methodology to investigate knowledge transfer effectiveness and technological innovation adoption within maritime engineering education programs. Findings reveal significant gaps between industry competency requirements and current educational outcomes, particularly in practical problem-solving capabilities, technology adaptation skills, and collaborative decision-making competencies. Industry professionals consistently rate educational effectiveness lower than academic educators across critical competency domains, indicating substantial opportunities for improvement through enhanced industry-academia collaboration. The research identifies mentorship programs, collaborative projects, and innovative assessment methodologies as high-impact approaches for addressing educational enhancement opportunities. Technology integration analysis reveals critical gaps between current educational practices and industry technological advancement, emphasizing urgent needs for systematic approaches to maintaining curriculum relevance. The study establishes evidence-based frameworks for sustainable industry-academia collaboration that can enhance maritime engineering education effectiveness while addressing evolving industry competency requirements. Results demonstrate that systematic integration of professional expertise yields measurable improvements in student engagement, graduate employment outcomes, and industry satisfaction with educational programs.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors causing the failure of the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) during navigation on the Full ECDIS vessel MV. Tembaga Sea, and to formulate effective mitigation strategies to minimize the risk of navigational disturbances. As the primary navigation system on a Full ECDIS vessel, ECDIS plays a crucial role in ensuring maritime safety; therefore, system failure may significantly impact ship operations. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection was conducted through direct observation during the sea practice period (PRALA), in-depth interviews with the Chief Officer, Second Officer, and Third Officer, and documentation studies. Mitigation efforts include improving regular and scheduled maintenance, optimizing system and storage management, conducting training and familiarization on handling ECDIS failures, and strengthening supervision and evaluation by the company

Abstract

Fire is one of the risks that can occur anytime and anywhere in marine shipping activities, the risk of fire on ships is quite large because the number of fire cases ranks second after the number of ship sinking cases. Management must pay attention to the provisions stipulated in the work safety regulations on ships as regulated in SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea), ISM Code (International Safety Management Code) and STCW (Standard of Training, Certificate and Wachtkeeping for Seafarers) conventions to protect seafarers and prevent the risks in carrying out an activity on board. The purpose of this study was to find out how to implement Fire Drill as an effort to increase crew alertness on the Seroja XVIII. Limin Ventures. In this scientific work, the author uses a qualitative descriptive approach and primary and secondary data sources. The results of this study can be seen that the application of procedures before the Fire Drill or fire drills have been implemented well on the Seroja XVIII by holding a safety meeting before the activity and the captain always asks each crew about their duties and responsibilities in the event of a fire on board.
