Abstract

The development of learning media is a major aspect to improve the achievement of learning competencies that are in accordance with the needs of Indonesian Language learners for Foreign Speakers (BIPA). At Semarang University, BIPA learning media containing grammar based on Android is still lacking. Therefore, the researcher developed BANATABA (Grammar Colored Blocks) learning media. BANATABA is an Android-based BIPA learning media that aims to teach Indonesian grammar to foreign students at Semarang State University at an advanced level. This development research uses the Sugiyono model, this research stage is summarized into five stages that are carried out systematically, because this stage is adjusted to the level of need, including: (1) potential and problems, (2) data collection, (3) product design, (4) design validation, and ( 5) design revision . The results of the assessment by media experts showed that the BANATABA learning media obtained a feasibility percentage of 91%. Meanwhile, the results of the assessment by material experts showed that the BANATABA learning media obtained a feasibility percentage of 69%. The assessment by BIPA experts showed that the BANATABA learning media obtained a feasibility percentage of 95%. This research has theoretical and practical benefits, namely to teach Indonesian grammar through a digital platform and to motivate further research.

Abstract

Abstract This research aims to analyze the language errors of BIPA students in Jambi Province in writing non-academic texts. The research method used in qualitative research is a content analysis approach. The data in this research consists of analysis of language errors in the aspects of grammar, vocabulary, spelling, as well as inappropriate cohesion and coherence in the non-academic texts of BIPA students in Jambi City. The source of research data was obtained from written results in the from of proposal texts for BIPA student activities based on the Affiliate Program for BIPA students from Jambi University and Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi State Islamic University with a total of thirty foreign students from Malaysia and Thailand. The research results show that BIPA students’ language errors consist of errors in grammar, vocabulary, spelling, cohesion and coherence. The causes of these errors are influenced by mother tongue interference, lack of understanding of Indonesian language rules, and communication strategies. This research serves as a guideline for improving BIPA teaching methods to improve Indonesian language skills needed in the ability to write non-academic texts in the form of activity proposals.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pemberdayaan bahasa dan budaya Indonesia melalui kanal YouTube BIPA Kemendikbud sebagai media pembelajaran bagi penutur asing. Pendekatan bilingualisme, yang memanfaatkan pergantian kode dan bahasa ibu pemelajar diterapkan untuk memfasilitasi pemahaman bahasa dan budaya Indonesia secara mendalam. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini berasal dari kanal YouTube BIPA Kemendikbud. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode simak bebas libat cakap dan observasi tidak langsung, sehingga dapat mengevaluasi materi pembelajaran yang disajikan dalam kanal tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan ini membantu meningkatkan kompetensi linguistik, pemahaman budaya, dan kepercayaan diri pemelajar dalam menggunakan bahasa Indonesia. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa seri video seperti Sahabatku Indonesia berfokus pada penyampaian materi dasar berbahasa Indonesia, seperti ucapan salam, kalimat ajakan, kata hubung dan lain-lain, sementara Bahan Alih Wahana BIPA dan Handai Indonesia memberikan wawasan budaya yang lebih kaya, seperti seni tradisional, kuliner, dan tokoh nasional.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the essence of local tourism on Madura Island which can be used as BIPA teaching materials for foreign speakers at the beginner level. The results of this study are BIPA textbooks at the beginner level based on the local tourism potential of Madura, especially local tourism on Mandangin Island. This study uses development research methods with four development phases, such as (1) initial investigation, (2) design, (3) realization and construction, and (4) test, evaluation, and revision. This book is develope to serve as a companion to the main teaching materials that have been provided by BIPA Kemdikbud. Therefore, BIPA teaching materials consist of various aspects of life in Indonesia.

Abstract

The evaluation of Indonesian for speakers of other languages (BIPA) is important in the age of globalisation to ensure the effectiveness of learning for foreign speakers. This study attempts to evaluate the competence of the 2019 edition of the Sahabatku Indonesia course materials, the official published book for basic level (A1) learners, by analysing the suitability of the materials against the competence standards, the representation of Indonesian culture, and the quality of presentation. Using qualitative content analysis, this study examined the text, images, and audio of the teaching materials based on 16 indicators of Muslich's competency standards and Permendikbudristek No. 22 of 2022. The results show that these teaching materials fall into the excellent category with a feasibility percentage of 90.625%, excelling in pre-discourse, exercises and presentation of materials. However, there are inconsistencies in cultural representation, acronyms without explanation and outdated currency illustrations. The results confirm that adjustments should be made to these aspects to improve their relevance and effectiveness in BIPA materials, to ensure alignment with cultural development and learner needs, and to provide guidance for the development of more effective BIPA materials in the future.

Abstract

This study investigates the articulatory challenges faced by 20 American BIPA learners in pronouncing Indonesian consonants. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research focuses on analyzing phonetic deviations based on recorded oral data. A total of 153 utterances were examined to identify patterns in consonant realizations. The findings reveal significant difficulties in articulating specific consonant phonemes, including bilabial plosives [b], [p], glottal fricatives [h], apico-alveolar plosives [d], [t], dorso-velar plosives [g], [k], lamino-palatal affricates [tʃ], and postalveolar affricates [dʒ]. The results demonstrate recurring phonological processes such as substitution, deletion, and addition of sounds. Substitution patterns include [t] realized as [tʃ] or [d] and [dʒ] as [tʃ]. Deletion frequently occurs in final consonants, particularly [h], [t], and [g]. Additionally, some learners added glides [tʃj] or modified articulations [ŋˈɡ], [dʒj] to accommodate unknown phonemes. This study emphasizes the need for targeted pronunciation training in BIPA programs, such as minimal pair analysis, word and sentence repetition, with a focus on consonant production accuracy through repetitive exercises and phonetic awareness activities. By addressing these challenges, BIPA teachers’ or instructors can be better in supporting learners to achieve more native-like pronunciation.

Abstract

Pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) merupakan salah satu upaya internasionalisasi bahasa Indonesia sekaligus diplomasi budaya. Namun, bahan ajar BIPA yang tersedia saat ini kurang mengintegrasikan aspek kearifan lokal secara variatif dan kontekstual. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan bahan ajar BIPA berbasis kearifan lokal dengan tema Istana Maimun sebagai representasi budaya Melayu Deli. Metode penelitian dan pengembangan yang digunakan mencakup beberapa tahap, yaitu analisis kebutuhan, perencanaan desain produk, pengembangan bahan ajar, validasi oleh ahli, uji coba dengan pembelajar asing, serta revisi produk. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahan ajar yang dikembangkan mampu memberikan pengalaman belajar yang relevan dan menarik melalui integrasi nilai-nilai budaya lokal yang kaya. Penggunaan media interaktif, seperti video, kuis, dan animasi, dalam bahan ajar semakin meningkatkan daya tarik pembelajaran. Bahan ajar ini tidak hanya meningkatkan kompetensi linguistik pembelajar, tetapi juga memperkaya wawasan mereka tentang budaya Indonesia, khususnya budaya Melayu Deli. Selain itu, pengajar BIPA mendapatkan variasi pendekatan pembelajaran yang lebih relevan dengan latar belakang pembelajar. Dengan demikian, bahan ajar ini berkontribusi dalam pelestarian budaya lokal, mendukung diplomasi budaya, dan mendukung internasionalisasi bahasa Indonesia. Penggunaan tema Istana Maimun dalam bahan ajar menjadi langkah strategis untuk memperkenalkan kekayaan budaya Sumatera Utara secara global.Kata Kunci: bahan ajar, bipa, budaya melayu, istana maimun, kearifan lokal.

Abstract

Revitalizing Governance of the Indonesian Language for Non-Native Speakers (BIPA) Program at ITB: Enhancing the Internationalization of Indonesian Higher Education. Objectives: This study investigates the revitalization of the governance of the Indonesian Language for Non-Native Speakers/Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) program at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in order to achieve World Class University status and enhance the internationalization of higher education in Indonesia. Methods: The study explores the management of the BIPA program, covering aspects such as selection processes, available programs, instructor recruitment and qualifications, student benefits, teaching challenges, and strategies, utilizing qualitative research methods, including thematic analysis, interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis. Findings: The findings reveal that the BIPA program at ITB is well-structured and funded, with highly qualified instructors, providing international students with opportunities for cultural immersion, career development, and community interaction. Despite challenges such as online learning, linguistic technicalities, and motivational issues, the BIPA program’s success at ITB is attributed to active learning processes, competent teachers, and an ambitious academic culture. Conclusion: The study acknowledges the limitations of focusing on ITB alone and recommends further research on other institutions and programs to contribute more comprehensively to the internationalization of Indonesian higher education. Keywords: BIPA program governance, internationalization; indonesian higher education, world Class University status.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202493

Abstract

In this digital era, teachers are required to be able to utilize technology-based learning media. One of the technology-based learning media is virtual reality. Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology that allows users to interact with digitally created and simulated environments that resemble the real world. The approach in this study uses literature studies. Literature studies are conducted by collecting references consisting of several previous studies and then compiled to draw conclusions. The results of the literature review were used to determine the potential use of virtual reality as a BIPA learning medium. The purpose of this study is to describe the role of virtual reality as a learning medium and describe the use of virtual reality in BIPA learning. The result of this study is that virtual reality has many roles as a learning medium and virtual reality can be used as an alternative learning medium in BIPA learning.

Abstract

Pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) yang mengintegrasikan budaya lokal memiliki potensi untuk meningkatkan pemahaman bahasa peserta didik dan kemampuan interkultural mereka. Pengalaman langsung, seperti mengenakan pakaian adat, mengikuti upacara keagamaan, dan berinteraksi di pasar tradisional, membantu peserta belajar bahasa dalam dunia nyata. Metode ini sejalan dengan teori pendidikan interkultural dan pemerolehan bahasa kedua (Krashen, 2021), yang menekankan betapa pentingnya pengalaman dalam pembelajaran bahasa (Liddicoat & Scarino, 2020). Peserta tidak hanya memeroleh kosa kata baru, tetapi mereka juga memeroleh pemahaman tentang makna sosial dan budaya yang terkandung di dalamnya. Untuk meningkatkan efisiensi program, strategi pengajaran yang menyeimbangkan teori dan praktik diperlukan. Untuk meningkatkan pengalaman belajar peserta, integrasi budaya dalam pembelajaran BIPA dapat diterapkan di daerah lain di Indonesia.
