Abstract

There are two majorities of thought in the process of language learning and acquisition. They are behaviorist and mentalist theory. The behaviorist theory is based on psychological aspects of learners in their habit formation while the mentalist’s come with the new approach called Language Acquisition Device (LAD) that used in the process of learning. In Modern Islamic Boarding School the term of language environment is used as the process of foreign language learning in which students communicate one another by using the foreign languages, but they are also forced to learn their structures and systems in the classes. The researcher used ethnography and narrative study to gain the data, he observed the phenomenon directly to the one most prominent Modern Islamic Boarding School located in East Java and interviewed with the responsible teacher for language development, in conclusion, both theories are used by Modern Islamic Boarding School in the process of language learning.

Abstract

In accordance with the 2013 curriculum that uses Scientific Approach where students learn using the 7M method (Observing, Questioning, Trying, Gathering Information, Reasoning, Concluding, and Communicating), the real problem is a tool which is considered fairly important to be used in learning. Mathematical modeling is an approach in which students bring real problems into mathematical problems. Algebra is an important tool used in modeling a real problem into a mathematical problem. Students are asked to observe the environment around them and then asked to make their mathematical model in an algebraic form. The subjects in this study were 21 eighth-grade students of Pangudi Luhur Junior High School in Srumbung, Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. This research uses Qualitative Approach. The result of this study found that most students are able to create algebraic forms from the environment they have observed, but there are still difficulties. Some groups still need quite a lot of help from teachers but some also need a little help from teachers.

Abstract

Education not only teaches concepts but also the formation of attitudes and characters in preserving local culture. Knowledge of local wisdom is important because it is a means for students to better understand and love their culture. This study aims to determine the response of students and how the ability of prospective teachers to design local wisdom-based learning. A questionnaire and observation instrument were employed in this research. Students' perceptions of learning based on local wisdom were assessed. Besides, the ability of students in designing local wisdom-based learning activities was evaluated. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study. The results of this research showed students' positive perception of learning based on local wisdom. The ability of students in designing learning activities gives good results. Local wisdom-based learning provides an opportunity for students to get to know their local culture and develop it into chemistry learning activities. The researcher of this study suggests the continuity of the implementation of local wisdom-based learning to preserve local wisdom values.

Abstract

Across the world, children from non-dominant language speaking families are not performing as well as their peers who speak a dominant language when they enter school. The current study examines the case of Indonesia, investigating the influence of language background status, early literacy characteristics, and socioeconomic status on literacy achievement in Indonesia. Drawing from the PIRLS 2011 dataset (N = 2,725), findings reveal that there is a significant association between each variable and literacy achievement, and that socioeconomic status explains literacy achievement most strongly among 4th grade students in Indonesia. Implications are discussed.DOI:doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2019.030211

Abstract

Fractions are well known to be difficult to learn, but it is should not be surprising considering the complexity of the concepts involved. In working with fractions, children learn new rules that often conflict with well-established ideas about whole numbers. Many studies have revealed that fractions division has been thought to be the most complex of the mathematical operations in elementary mathematics. However, fractions and the operations have been recognized as an important foundation for the understanding of our number system. Therefore teachers should provide meaningful learning experiences that relate to division of fractions. This present study aimed to analyze secondary school students construction of knowledge in fractions division. This descriptive study was conducted with 44 seventh grade students in Pangudi Luhur Junior High School in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. During a one-week unit of lesson on division of fractions, students were given a task-based activity specifically designed to promote students understanding. Data sources in this study included observation of learning process and a pre and posttest of students conceptual knowledge and procedural computation skills. The result showed a significant improvement in students conceptual knowledge and procedural knowledge.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2018.020205

Abstract

Previous studies reported that disciplinary problems that occur amongst school students from teacher perspective; while some studies reported that this problem becomes increasingly serious and widespread, but both retract students from learning. Henceforth, this survey was conducted to investigate how far the problem occurred among vocational college students especially catering students. An interview session was conducted with several catering teachers in two vocational colleges in Southern Region of Malaysia, which focuses on three types of problems namely bullying, truancy and stealing. Data were analysed using thematic analysis using deductive approach. Result indicated that these discipline problems occur among catering students is at alarming level. Peers and students’ background contributed to students’ misdemeanours. Thus, these factors can be a starting point for further mitigating the cases and more focuses should be given on students’ learning.

Abstract

This research attempts to discover the identities of pre-service teachers in a private university in Yogyakarta, in relation to their positioning of their students. In addition, this research also aims to study to what extent positioning can construct identities of the pre-service teachers. The participants of this research were two pre-service teachers of a private university in Yogyakarta. The data were obtained through interview. The findings of this research first showed that the pre-service teachers perceived various identities in relation to positioning of their students. However, it was found that there were different identities between the two participants even though they faced similar problems. Last, positioning might have a force for the pre-service teachers in constructing their identities.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2019.030102

Abstract

Sanata Dharma University Physics students are supposed to improve Sanata Dharma main values: truth, justice, diversity, and human dignity. The improvement is done through PPKMB program, a character building program in one semester. This research wants to see whether this program succeeded or not. The research used 42 physics students as sample. The PPKMB program is used as a treatment. The research applied some instruments such as questionnaires, field notes, and student report on their project. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that the truth, justice, and diversity values improved, the human dignity value was not significantly different, and according to the students this program was useful and successful.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2017.010207

Abstract

Memorizing structure pattern is very tiring and often resulting in failure. Learners often try to adapt it in conversation and writing, but it sometimes ends up with unsatisfactory. The process of implementing grammar-translation methods to explain how to structure patterns built and used leads learners to understand it clearly and it could decrease the level of confusion significantly. Furthermore, to make the patterns learners learned to stay some longer in their minds, they can notice the grammar content in short stories. The use of online short stories could ease them to read more to support noticing. Thus, learning grammar pattern boosted by the grammar-translation method and using online short stories to notice grammatical pattern could develop students’ proficiency in implementing grammar both in spoken and written.

Abstract

When speakers share two or more languages in common, they often switch their languages in a conversation. It is true in the classes where both teachers and students must use a certain language as the language of instructions, as happening in the English classes of Computer Science students in Indonesia. Some teachers tend to always use English all the time with some considerations, whereas others often practice code-switching in the instructional process with other reasons, as well. This study is an observation of the effect of code switching to engage students in two English for computer science classes, in which the teacher in one class used code-switching and the other did not.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2019.030206
