Abstract

Teaching grammar is believed to be a way to help learners use English correctly and appropriately. However, as English teachers, we sometimes find that a word, phrase, or sentence is ambiguous as it has more than one meaning. The ambiguity, however, can be noticed if one really has a linguistic knowledge on how to analyze the phrase or sentence. There are two kinds of ambiguity (lexical and structural). This paper explores structural ambiguity. Structural ambiguity occurs when a phrase or sentence has more than one underlying structure. The phrase can be disambiguated by putting it in a sentence with some sort of formal indicator which helps the reader or hearer to recognize the sentence structure. Some of the signals include function words, inflections, affixes, stress, juncture, and punctuation. The rest of this paper discusses some types of structural ambiguity, how they differ, and some possible ways to resolve them in order to have understanding for the learners.DOI:https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2017.010108

Abstract

Digital transformation marked with internet and information technology use has entered into government apparatus learning, particularly the new employees constituting millennial generation inherent to gadget. Kahoot! and Quizizz are online quiz application that can be the choice to make the learning attractive and joyful. This research employed a quasi-experimental method only on the studied group, and the data was collected using questionnaire, observation, and documentation. Data was analyzed using logico-inductive method encompassing thee stages: coding, describing main characteristics and interpreting data. The result of research showed that Quizizz is more preferable to Kahoot! to the participants because in Quizizz question and answer appear on cell phone/laptop screen of individual participants so that they should not see the screen before the class just like that in Kahoot!; the answer in Kahoot! constitutes symbols while in Quizizz the real answer constitutes word, number, or figure; after the quiz has been completed, the questions answered can be checked in order to find out the ones answered incorrectly and mastered poorly by the participants.

Abstract

Indonesian government has made improving basic education a priority, and indicated that it sees technology as a way to provide teachers with the means to teach innovative lessons while closing the performance gap between rural and urban schools and between poorer and richer provinces. The role of technology must be aligned with the existing education ecosystem. It should not replace the traditional education system that involves teachers, schools, universities and parents, albeit offering wide range of information and allowing independent learning. Education is not only about learning in school, but also building a character. That is why the role of technology is intended as a tool to support the learning process, to open access, and improve quality. This paper describes the efforts taken by the Indonesian government in supporting and expanding the use of technology in the field of education in Indonesia. The discussions are supported by related research findings and literature.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2019.030112

Abstract

Education is an essential aspect of a community development. In Indonesia, various educational changes have been done in order to cater students with the necessary skills to face the vast dynamics of the world. Despite those changes integrated into the curriculum, Indonesia still has an issue to provide suitable learning processes for students who live in some remote areas during pandemic. Butet Manurung’s the Jungle School portrays some efforts for helping “Orang Rimba”, the nomadic tribes who live in rainforests at Bukit Dua Belas to experience proper education. Focusing on some learning processes in the work, a document analysis was combined with a theory of education. Then, the researchers found that self-regulated learning concepts were applied. This self-regulated learning took form in three aspects that were done by jungle children and this could be one of the keys to face some learning problems in some remote areas during pandemic.

Accordingly, it is essential to conduct a study on the issues of basic tenses in order to assist students to overcome their grammatical problems. Data were collected through questionnaires that were emailed to the participants. Results showed that the students had difficulties in producing or analyzing the present continuous tense, the present perfect tense and the present perfect continuous tense. The first semester students also faced difficulty in remembering the formula of each tense, admitting that they did not review the basic tenses regularly and the students found it difficult to comprehend their grammar lessons well in the classroom.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2018.020206

Abstract

There are some challenges in Interpreting; in this study, we focus more on the interpreting of pronouns from English as Source Language (SL) to Indonesian as Target Language (TL). The data was collected within simulations in classroom setting. The results showed many unnatural translation of pronoun ‘it’ and ‘this’. References of these pronouns are anaphoric and may take different linguistic units (clause, phrase, word). There were some strategies employed to achieve natural interpreting in TL. Some students repeated the reference(s); but they need to recover the whole references (might be very challenging when the reference(s) are complex). Other strategies are partial recovery, or lexical addition that complies with TL structure. There are some suggestions for an interpreter to deal with the challenges; one of them is to be familiar with the topic of what they are interpreting. In this way, they do not have to rely on short-term memory skills to decide which strategy to employ.

Abstract

This research study assessed the effects of research-based learning (RBL) on the metacognitive awareness of senior high school (SHS) students, specifically metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive regulation, and the correlation between their subcomponents. Fifty-six (56) Grade 12 students who have taken research subjects were obtained as respondents using purposive sampling. The respondents answered a 52-item metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) with 17 items on metacognitive knowledge and 35 items on metacognitive regulation. Findings show that RBL developed a high level of conditional, procedural, and declarative knowledge among SHS students. The learning approach also developed a very high level of debugging strategies, and a high level of planning, information management system, evaluation, and comprehension monitoring. Furthermore, there is a weak or a moderately significant positive correlation between some subcomponents of metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive regulation as the effect of RBL. In conclusion, RBL has a considerable impact on the metacognitive awareness subcomponents of Grade 12 students.
