Abstract

Universities are required to improve their service mainly in offering effective reading course which meets diverse issues. Reading course syllabus should be designed appropriately dealing with the students’ needs and the shift of current global issues. This study was carried out in the purpose of evaluating pre-existing reading course syllabus and intending the novel one. The study utilized various methods namely questionnaire, interview, and documents. The data were analyzed statistically and descriptively. It was found that students focus on the general- literary skills mastery only so they have unclear goals in the content-specific literary skills. Given that findings, backward design was employed. Skill syllabus and content-based syllabus are selected to promote students’ skills in their contextual learning. Integration of contextual and flexible topics, materials, and mobile apps in the course syllabus is significant to transform their learning to be more fruitful.

Abstract

Mastering English skill for students at a vocational institution of higher education is a mounting problem as the students are expected to develop practical English skills in specific disciplinary knowledge and internalize the attitudes and professional values. Implementation of project-based learning (PBL) in teaching speaking particularly the presentation skill can be seen as an alternative to cover both areas as it encourages students to develop higher critical thinking, enhances deep learning and motivates students to be independent learners with exceptional self-management. This article presents the results of the study on the impact of project-based learning on students’ speaking achievement particularly their presentation skills and students’ perceptions on the PBL stages. Participants were 19 fourth-semester students enrolled in a three-year undergraduate program in Electrical Engineering. The goal of this project was to drive students’ engagement in speaking activities and put students in the language-specific setting in which language was naturally used based on the project characteristics. This research employed mixed methods in which the quantitative data, i.e., pre-test and post-test were analyzed using SPSS statistic 21. The finding showed that the correlation coefficient (r) was 0,575. Based on the interpretation scale of correlation coefficient by Guilford (1965), the range of the correlation coefficients is between the range of 0,401-0,700 which means that the correlation is quite strong. Based on the result of analysis using SPSS statistics 21 with 95% level of confidence, it was revealed that -tcount -ttable (-6.269 -2,10092) and the significance value (pvalue) of 2-tailed was less than 0,05 (0,000 0,05). It can be concluded that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected signifying that there was a significant effect of PBL implementation in improving students’ speaking achievement. In addition, this study also analyzed qualitative data collected from google form and focus group discussion to gain students’ perception towards the implementation of PBL using infographic. The results of online questionnaire revealed that students experienced deep and autonomous learning through the stages conducted in the project. They gained better understanding on grammar and vocabulary during peer review and showed positive attitude in designing infographics as they could revise the structure of their presentation while designing the infographics’ wireframes. Consequently, learning speaking through project-based learning using infographic helped to enhance students’ engagement to series of works within the projects and foster their collaborative and communicative skills while working together in groups. The results showed a significant effect of PBL on students’ presentation skills and improve soft skills compatible to workplace requirements. Considering the positive result of this study, PBL is recommended to be applied in teaching speaking for students in higher vocational education as it gives beneficial impact on students’ content learning and soft skills.

Abstract

On a daily basis, teachers all over the world modify their students brain when they teach the contents that the students need to learn; this biological, cognitive and behavioral process is called learning. From a biological, cognitive and educational point of view, those modifications are totally necessary for the development of the learners. One of those so called brain-modification experiences occurs when they learn English. Then, you may wonder, how could these modifications (learning) be enhanced? In order to answer this question, this paper suggests a connection between 12 brain/mind learning principles(Caine, Caine, Klimek, McClintic, 2009) and English teaching aiming to make it more effective. The reason for this connection is that if teachers become aware of the way the brain learns, their practices may be enhanced leading to more effective teaching and learning (Geake, 2009). Thus, in order to state this connection, every principle is presented, described and followed by some general practical suggestions related to English teaching. It is necessary to mention that all the included suggestions will be simply examples; it would be then the task of the reader, the teacher or instructor, to ignite her creativity by applying the principles in her particular context to enhance her teaching practices and promote English language learning among students.DOI:https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2018.020208

Abstract

This qualitative research was conducted to investigate the use of online peer review as a strategy to improve writing skills in the revision process. Two  English students of a private university in Malang were recruited based on two criteria: 1) they have passed an academic writing course with an excellent score, and 2) they use online media to conduct peer reviews. Using a semi-structured interview, the students were asked what types of online resources they use to perform online peer review, and how they do peer review online. The interview data were analyzed using content analysis. To triangulate the data, investigator triangulation was performed by involving two data analysts. The results of the study were that students mostly used WhatsApp and Zoom media to conduct online peer reviews. In addition, they used several platforms such as grammar checkers, online dictionaries to assist the revision process. The students shared their writing product in the form of a file to their peers via WhatsApp and improve the results of the feedback by utilizing online sources or obtaining reviews related to grammar, writing effectiveness, and diction errors.

Abstract

This study established a profile of Bachelor of Science in Statistics (BSS) students under the open enrolment policy of Visayas State University (VSU). The study also determined the graduation rate of the BSS students. Data on the present BSS students were collected from a survey of currently enrolled students while data on the past BSS students were taken from the previous study. Data used to track down the BSS students since their first year to determine the graduation rate of each batch covered and were taken from the Office of the University Registrar. Results showed that majority of the present BSS students are female. All BSS students surveyed come from the Visayas area with most of them come from Region VIII, Philippines. While most of the BSS students have annual family incomes below the poverty line in Region VIII, still most of them get their financial support from their parents only. Majority are regular students and want to work as statisticians in the future. The relative importance of factors influencing the choice of degree program are very similar between the past and the present BSS students. The graduation rate of BSS students is variable (coefficient of variation of 42.5%) with a median of 26.1% and a mean of 25.3%. Hence, an extensive recruitment and orientation about the program must be done to increase the enrollees and develop their interest towards the program, respectively.
