Abstract

ABSTRACT Short story is a piece of prose fiction. Short story features a small cast of named characters, and focuses on a "single effect" or mood which can lead to the next event and storyline. In doing so, short stories make use of plot, resonance, and other dynamic components to a far greater degree than is typical of an anecdote, yet to a far lesser degree than a novel. While the short story is largely distinct from the novel. The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood is one of the famous short story written by Charles Perrault, a famous French writer and important person on his time, depict the social condition on his time where the social stratification happened in the society. This research entitled “Gambaran Stratifikasi Sosial dalam Cerita Pendek The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood Karya Charles Perrault” is created to give explanation about the social stratification that Charles Perrault depict in the short story The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood by using the sociological aspects such as status and honor and intrinsic aspects which mainly focused on expressions, dialogues, and actions through the interaction among the characters. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze the social stratification depicted by Charles Perrault in The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods. To identify and analyze the short story, the writer uses sociological approach and social theory from Talcott Parsons about social stratification. The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood shows the status of the characters affect the honor influence to the others or otherwise, the honor effect the status of the characters through the dialogues, actions, and expressions which found in the interaction among the characters as the depiction of social stratification. ______________________________________________________________________________ Keywords: short story, social stratification, status, honor, expression, dialogues, actions, expression, the Sleeping Beauty in the Wood.

Abstract

ABSTRACT            This research entitled “Taboo Word Related to Gender in English and Karo Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objectives of this research is to identify and classify the kinds of taboo words related to gender in English and Karo language and to analyze the difference of both languages. This research used descriptive method, which takes three steps to finish this research. In preparation, the writer reads some books and journals abouts taboo words and gender to find the relevan theory. The data of the kinds of taboo words related to gender in English were collected by American Pie movie and skripsi, while taboo words related to gender in Karo language were taken from interviewing to 10 informants. The data about taboo words related to gender in English and Karo language that have been collected, then classified, analyzed and described by using the theory of Wardaugh’s (1986), then the data of both languages were contrasted by using Lado’s theory (1975). The result of this reseach showed that there are four kinds of taboo word related to gender in English and Karo language, namely taboo word related to sexs, part of body, animals and excretions. In Karo language showed that, there are anothers taboo words which aren’t included in Wardaugh’s theory, which related to kinship and ancestor.   Keywords: Taboo Words, Gender, English and Karo Language, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Adverbs in Album After Laughter of Paramore Group Band” is written to fulfill the requirement of finish S1 degree in English Department Faculty of Letters Sam Ratulangi University. The aims of research are to indentify, classify and analyze the types and function of the adverbs found in the album of after laughter.The method use is descriptive method. The result of shows that the types of  adverb is the album After Laughter are: adverbs of manner, adverbs of place and direction, adverb of time, intensifying adverbs, sentence adverbs, conjuctive adverbs  the functions of the adverbs are: adverb as modifier of a verb, adverb of adjectives and adverbs and adverb as modifier of the whole sentence. it is expected that this research contribute to linguistic theory in syntax and help student to understand more about adverbs. Key Words: Adverbs,Types and Functions, After Laughter.

Abstract

ABSTRAKTION In dieser Untersuchung wird die Natur des Gedichtes in der deutschen Volksliedern nämlich, 1)Weißt du wieviel Sternlein stehen, 2)Wir lagen vor Madagaskar, 3)Ich bete an die Macht der Liebe, 4)Kein schöner Land in dieser Zeit,  5)Geh aus mein Herz und suche Freud, 6)Ob’s sturmt oder schneit? beschreiben. Die Daten werden von internet Seiten “Volksliederarchiv.de” genommen. Als theoretische Grundlage verwendet die Schreiberin die Meinung von Gutzen(1979), I.A Richard im Waluyo (1987), und Waluyo(2002). Um die Volksliedern zu identifizieren, zu klasifizieren, zu analysieren und zu beschreiben, werden die deskriptive Methode von Djajasudarma(2010), und die strukturalische Annährung,vor allem die innere Strukturanalyse benutzt. Innere Struktur in der deutschen Volksliedern besteht aus dem Thema, Ton, Gefühl und der Botschaft.  Die Schlüßfolgerung der Untersuchung zeigen, daß vier Volkslieder die gleiche Thema haben, nämlich: der Gottheit. Dann das Lied “Wir lagen vor Madagaskar”, hat das Lieben zwischen Männern und Frauen Thema. Das Lied “Ob’s sturmt oder schneit?” hat Thema, nämlich: Der Brüderlichkeit. Die nächste Schlüßfolgerung findet die Schreiberin, daß sechs Volksliedern den unterschiedlichen Ton, Gefühl, und Botschaft haben.  Stichwörter: Die Natur des Gedichtes, Volksliedern, Volksliederarchiv.de

Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi which is entitled “Dampak Jim Crow Laws Terhadap Orang-Orang Kulit Hitam yang Digambarkan dalam Novel The Help Karya Kathryn Stockett” is a study about the social life of American People in 1960 through the characters in the novel. There are two questions to be answered in this research: Howis Jim Crow Laws reflected in the novel  andwhat is the effect of the laws to black people. The aims of this research are to analyze the reflection of the Jim Crow Laws in the novel, and to analyze what the effect of Jim Crow Laws to black people in their social life is. The writer uses theory of Aristotle, George Lukacs and Taineto describe what happened in real life of black people is reflected in a literary work. The intrinsicand extrinsic approaches are applied and the descriptive method is used in this research. The result shows that Jim Crow Laws appears through the story and produces an effect like discrimination that causes black people got treated improperlyseparated and limited in using public facilities, either these laws made white people took a benefit to put blacks in a lower class of society.   Keywords: Effect, Jim Crow Laws, Black People, The Help

Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of this study is “Klitik dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Toulour (Suatu Analisis Kontrastif)”. The aims of this study is to identify, analyze, and describe the form and function of clitics in English and in Toulour Language, and to find out the similarities and differences of  clitics in both languages by using the theory of Zwicky (1994), Katamba (1994), and Whitman (1970). In this study, the English data were taken from several English books, and Toulour language data were taken from several informants by interviewing them. The method that has been applied in this study is contrastive analysis. The data of this sudy were analyzed descriptively then both languages were contrasted. The result shows that based on forms, English has 15 clitics which are divided into proclitics and enclitics. The function of these clitics are: auxiliary (Zwicky, 1970), adverb (Zwicky and Pullum, 1983), heads (Pullum, 1997), and pronomina (Radford, 1997). Toulour language has only 12 enclitics. The function of this clitics are: auxiliary and pronomina. In terms of similarity, both languages have enclitics, while based on function, both have the functions as auxiliary and pronomina. In terms of differences, based on forms clitics in English have both proclitics and enclitics while clitics in Toulour language have only enclitics. On the other hand, based on functions clitics in English have all four functions (auxiliary, adverb, heads, and pronomina), while clitics in Toulour language have only two functions as auxiliary and pronomina. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “adaptasi dan integrasi budaya lokal pada bahan ajar bahasa Inggris oleh guru sekolah menengah di Tanimbar” were focused to observe the use of English material adaptation by teachers in three secondary schools in Tanimbar, Maluku. The writer in this research used the theories from Richards (2007) and Cheng (2002) to be his main theories, where the typical of material adaptation that tried to be reached by teachers also came from those two theories, while the writer also read and learned some related research which have been done by Syahri and Susanti (2016) in Palembang and Warouw (2015) in Manado. In this research, the writer used some of data collection techniques that reliable to this research, namely; observations and interviews techniques. The finding shows that the mostly used technique is addition and it is practiced in the classroom spontaneously in order to meet the students’ needs. Then, the mostly used local cultural content in teachers’ practices is local folklores. Thhis local cultural content is used to develop students’ interests in learning English and play an important role in the teaching and learning processes.. Keywords:  ELT Materials, Materials adaptation, local cultural contents.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Kalimat Tanya dalam Novel The Conffesion Karya Jhon Grisham” is written to fulfill the requirement of finishing S1 degree in Faculty of Letter The aim of the research is to identify, to describe and to analyze interrogative sentence in terms of its types. In analyzing the data, the writer uses descriptive method and by using the concept of Aarts and Aarts about interrogative sentence in terms of its types. The result of this research shows that interrogative sentence has five types which are  yes/no question  question tag  interrogative sentence formed by question word Wh-word, interrogative sentence in use negative form, and interrogative sentence indefinitely. Abstract

ABSTRACT The research which entitled, “Verbs in English and Konjo Language: A Contrastive Analysis” aims at classifying, identifying and analyzing the kinds of verbs in these two languages and finding out the similarities and differences between both languages.  The English data have been collected from English books “Modern English” by Marcella Frank 1972 and the articles on internet, whereas the data of Konjo Language have been collected from informants.  In English, the kinds of verbs may be classified by complement of verb and form of verb involves predicating or linking verbs, transitive or intransitive verbs, reflexive verbs, auxiliary or lexical verbs and finite or non-finite verbs and in Konjo language it concerns predicating or linking verbs, transitive or intransitive verbs and lexical verbs. Theoretically, this research gives contribution toward the knowledge development in contrastive analysis especially verbs in English and Konjo language. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Suffixes in English and Tontemboan language (A Contrastive Analysis)”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and describe the suffixes and to analyze the similarities and differences of suffixes used in both languages. This research uses a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research, the first step is preparation. In this step, the writer reads some books about suffixes. The second step is data collection. In this step, the writer collect the kind of suffixes that include in suffixes in English and Tontemboan language. The third step is data analysis. In this step, the writer identifies, classifies, and describes the data about suffixes in English and Tontemboan language according to O’Grady and Dobrovolsky’s (1992) theory and then the writer uses Lado (1957) and Whitman (1970) theory to find out the similarities and the differences of the structures in this case the suffixes of both languages in terms of forms, functions and meanings. The result shows that English and Tontemboan language have suffixes. The functions of English Suffixes are to form nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. While the function of Tontemboan suffixes are nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Keywords: Suffixes, English and Tontemboan language, Contrastive analysis.
