Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research entitled “Two-Word Verbs in the film Mockingjay part I and II by Francis Lawrence. This research focuse on types and meaning of  Two-word verbs by the utterance of the characters in the film mockingjay part I and II by Francis Lawrence. Two-word verbs is a verb that made up of main verb together with on verb or preposition or both. The research questions should be answered are what types of two-word verbs found in this film and what are the meaning of two-word verbs. The objective of the research  are to identify and classify the types of two-word verbs and analyze the meaning of two-word verbs in the film. This research used Coghiil (2003) and Walker (1989) theory and in collection data the writer paid attention to the utterance of the characters. The data analyzed descriptively result showed that the forms of two-word verbs found in the Hunger Games Mockingjay films part I and II by Francis Lawrence are categorized into three forms, namely transitive separable, transitive inseparable, and intransitive. The meaning of the two word verbs contained in the data the meanings of two words that are the same as the original meaning also has a meaning that is far different from the original meaning.      Keywords : Two-word verbs, Transitive and Intrasitive

Abstract

ABSTRACT             This research is entitled “The Reflection of Discipline of Joe as the Main Character in the Film Lean on Me (1989)”. The objectives of this research are to find out, classify and analyze the discipline of Joe’s character. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data of discipline concept were collected from books, skripsis and articles, and the data about discipline of Joe’s character were taken by screenshoting the scene in the film. The data that have been collected then analyzed by using Kenneth’s theory about discipline and to analyzed about the discipline  writer by using Snyder’s theory. The result of the research shows, that the discipline of Joe are gives orders a student to put the cigarette off, giving three days reward to the trouble maker student, telling do not smoking at school, ordering to take the foot out of the chair, expurgating the student who broke the school rules and telling to stay away from drugs, Joe scolding the teachers cannot run the school well, he scolding them because they can’t control the students, he asking to the teacher to apply the discipline to the student. While Joe’s discipline that reflected by his gesture, action, and speech are Joe pointed to the student and said to put out the cigarette, Joe take his point finger upward to affirm and said to his student that coming to school is only one reason that is to learn, moving his right hand toward the teacher for to write the trouble maker student to giving reward, and moving his head right side with the upset face to the teacher and scold them.  Keywords: The Reflection of Discipline, Joe’s Character, Lean on Me Film

Abstract

ABSTRCT             This skripsi is entitled “Language Style in  Song Lyrics of Linkin Park Album A Thousand Suns ( stylistics analysis)”. Language style is a way of expressing oneself through language. Language style  allows us to judge others through character and abilities of someone who uses the language.       The aim of this research is classify and analyze language style in lyrics of song Linkin Park album A Thousand Suns.The writer uses descriptive methode. This   research focuses on figure of comparison, figure of opposition, figure of connection, figure of repetition. The writer  identifies the data by reading  the lyrics script  after downloading from the internet, classifying and analyzing the data he uses the theory of  Halliday.            The result of this research shows that there are 8 language style in used the lyrics Linkin Park album A Thousand Suns from 9 songs is simile (4), metaphor (1), personification (8), antitesis (4), hiperbole (15), oksimoron (4), metonymy (4), repetition (7). So the conclusion that the use language style in lyrics of song Linkin Park   album A Thousand Suns is the most widely used is figure of opposition : Hyperbole.                            Keywords : Language Album, A Thousand suns Album.

Abstract

ABSTRACT            The research is entitled "Meningkatkan Kemampuan Mendengar Siswa Sekolah Dasar dalam Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan Metode TPR (Total Physical Response)”. This research is conducted in order to improve students’ listening skills using the total physical response (TPR) method at the fifth grade of SD Negeri 70 Manado. The aims of this research were to find out whether there was an improvement of students’ listening skills before and after being taught using the TPR method. In conducting this research, the researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of research. This research consisted of one cycle that consisted of four steps, they are: Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. To collect the data, the researcher did three steps, such as: Pre-test, Treatment, and Post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher used quantitative research design. The quantitative data were obtained from the fifth grade students’ scores of the pre-test and post-test. The results showed that the total physical response can improve the students listening skills at the fifth grade of SD Negeri 70 Manado. The improvement could be seen from pre-test and post-test scores in the one cycle. In the pre-test, the main score is 60.95 and in the post-test, the main score is 90.55. The average score of post-test was higher than pre-test, with an increase of 48.56%. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that TPR is effective for teaching listening skill. Keywords: CAR, TPR Method, Listening, Quantitative Research Design, Elementary School

Abstract

 ABSTRAKSkripsi ini membahas struktural novel Magic Hour. Unsur-unsur yang dianalisis adalah tema, plot atau alur, tokoh atau penokohan, latar, sudut pandang, dan amanat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif, melakukan penafsiran dengan menyajikan data dalam bentuk deskripsi. Teknik penelitian yang digunakan adalah pengumpulan data, analisis data, dan penyajian data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Berdasarkan analisis disimpulkan bahwa novel Magic Hour memiliki tema Pengorbanan dan cinta, alur cerita yang digunakan alur gabungan (maju dan mundur),  memiliki dua tokoh utama, yaitu Raina dan Dimas, latar tempat yang digunakan, yaitu panti asuhan, tokoh bunga Flora Florits, jalan, rumah sakit, restoran MA PETIT, Coffee Shop, rumah mewah atau rumahnya Dimas, taman, dermaga, pasar malam, dan kawah ijen. Latar waktu yang digunakan, yaitu pagi, siang, dan malam, sudut pandang yang digunakan adalah sudut pandang orang ketiga, dan memiliki pesan atau amanat mengenai kehidupan. Semua unsur yang terdapat dalam novel Magic Hour saling berkaitan dan berhubungan Kata Kunci      : Struktural, unsur intrinsik, metode kualitatif, novel Magic Hour.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled Adverbs in the book of Matthew aims to identify and classify types of adverb in three topics  and to analyze position of adverbs in sentences. The method which is used in this research is descriptive method. The date are; the parable of Sower, the faith of Cannanite Woman, and the Divorce. In analyzing the data, the writer used theory of Aarts and Aarts (1982) about adverbs.  The results of this research show that the position of adverb in the book of Matthew are; adverb before subject, adverb after subject, adverb before verb, adverb before subject attribute, and adverb after object..  Keywords: Advebrs, English, Analysis, Book of Matthew

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research  is entitled Complement in Novel One Touch of Topaz by Iris Johansen”The aims of this research are to identify and classify the types of complement, and to analyze the function and position of complement in One Touch of Topaz novel by Iris Johansen.In analyzing the data, the writer used the theory of Aarts and Aarts (1982) which divided complement into six types. Aarts and Aarts also describe each function of each complement. The writer analyze the position of complement by seeing the example of complement according to Aarts and Aarts.The method of this research is descriptive method. Descriptive data is a form word rather than a row of numbers. The result of this research found 1.446 sentences has complement which divided into direct object has 305 sentences, indirect object has 67 sentences, benefaktive object has 30 sentences, subject attribute has 332 sentences, object attribute has 23 sentences, and predicator complement has 689 sentences.The other result show that all types of complement found in the novel of One Touch of Topaz by Iris Johansen, each types of complement has one function and  has several position (Direct object has six positions, Indirect object has four position), Benefactive Object has four position, Subject Attribute has two positions, Object Attribute has three positions, and Predicator complement has three positions). ----------------------------------------------Keywords : sintax, complement, novel

Abstract

ABSTRACT            The title of this research is “Moral Values in the Movie Wonder by Stephen Chbosky” and it is intended as a requirement to accomplish a degree at the Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The aims of this study are to analyze the moral values in the movie Wonder through the portrayal of the main character named August Pullman and to identify the conflicts that the character deals with. Theories from a few experts are being applied in this study, such as theory from Pojman (2000) to unfold the morality in general, theory from Bohlin (2005) to unfold the morality in literature and conflict in characters, theory from Morrell (2009) to unfold the conflict and types of conflict in literature and theory from Roberts and Jacobs (1986) to unfold the function of conflict in literature. The results show that the main character, August Pullman, deals with several conflicts in his life such as conflict against syndrome, against low self-esteem, against bullying, and conflict to have a best friend; and the moral values out of all those conflicts that the main character deals with is that we need to be kind, do not lose faith in friendship, good personality is all that matters, true beauty comes from within, tears are the contemplation of self-motivation, things people deal make them who they are, and bullying could be a way to success.Keywords: Moral Values, Conflicts, August Pullman, The Movie Wonder.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Verbal Interaction between Teacher and Students of the Sixth Grade of SD GMIM 31 MANADO and Its Influences on the Students’ Motivation”. In this research, the writer focuses on verbal interactions that occur between teacher and students in the classroom and how the interaction influence on students’ motivation. The aims of this research are to identify and classify the kinds of verbal interaction occuring between teacher and stdents in the classroom as well as to analyze how the interaction influences students’ motivation. In this research, the writer uses qualitative method with case study. To analyze several kinds of verbal interactions that occur between teacher and students in the class, the writer uses theory of FIAC by Flanders (1963). Interviews were conducted to find out whether verbal interactions influence student’s motivation. The results of this research show 8 categories of interaction that occur in the class; acceptance of feelings, praising or encouragement, asking questions, lecture, giving directions, criticizing or justifying, response, silent or confusions. In addition, the results of interview show that the interaction influences student motivation in these ways: 1) students like to learn English, 2) students can read in English, 3) students can write in English, 4) students can speak in English, 5) students can listen in English, 6) students understand what the teacher teaches when learning English, 7) the way of teacher to teach is fun for students, 8) teacher often use English when teaching, 9) what is interesting about English, 10) internal interaction class when the learning process between teacher and student motivates the student.      Key Words: Interaction, Students’ Motivation

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “Ungkapan Cinta dalam Film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape produksi Lasse Hallstrom”. It is written to fulfill the requirement of accomplishing bachelor’s degree in English Department Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. The focus of this research is love expressions in the film. This research includes the kinds of love expression and the portrayed of love expressions. The writer used concepts from Collier (2014) and Grande (2016) as well as theory from Fromm (1998) to identify and classify the data. The writer also used the theory from Snyder (2011) to analyze the love expressions in the film “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”. The result of this research shows 7 types of love expressed in 9 types of love expression. The 7 types of love are love as answer of human existence, love between parent and child, brotherly love motherly love, erotic love, love-Self, and love of god. The 9 types of love expression are spending time together, giving something or gift, receiving something or gift, motivating, giving appreciation, doing helpful behaviors, doing physical affection, believing in each other, and emotional overflowing.Keywords: Love, Emotional Expression, Expression of Love, Film, Theory of Film
