Abstract

Microplastic (MP) pollution presents a significant challenge to the sustainability of aquaculture. MPs, originating from various sources such as domestic plastic waste and the degradation of aquaculture equipment, have been detected in aquaculture media, including water and sediment. Cultured organisms like fish, shrimp, and seaweed exhibit MP accumulation, impacting their health and posing risks to human consumers. This study reviews the distribution, ecological impacts, and potential mitigation strategies for MPs in aquaculture environments. Findings reveal that MPs cause bioaccumulation and trophic transfer, leading to physiological disturbances in organisms. Moreover, MPs act as carriers for other harmful pollutants. Mitigation technologies, such as water filtration systems and biodegradable materials, are under development but require further evaluation. Biological approaches utilizing microorganisms for MP degradation offer sustainable solutions. This study recommends integrated management through technological innovation, policy development, and community-based approaches to mitigate MP impacts in aquaculture. Abstract

Tributiltin (TBT) is an organotin compound that is still widely used as a toxic biocidal additive in antifouling paints. These compounds are classified as pollutants that are very difficult to decompose in waters. The test of the concentration of TBT in seawater was carried out at the WLN Laboratory (Water Laboratory Nusantara) Manado. Nitrate, nitrite and ammonia concentration tests were carried out at the Laboratory of the Manado Industrial Service and Standardization Center (BSPJI). Measurement of the physical and chemical parameters of seawater used: Temperature, Brightness, pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Salinity and Turbidity in situ. Analysis of the concentration of Tributiltin (TBT) compounds in seawater in the waters of the Lembeh Strait in the cultivation areas of Point 1 (Tanjung Rarandam), Point 2 (Kalapa Dua), Point 3 (Papusungan) in the Lembeh Strait showed a concentration of <0.01 μg/L, which is still in the safe range below the standard limit of seawater quality for biota (0.01 μg/L). Measuring water quality in the Lembeh Strait aquaculture area, the DO value ranges from 7.83-8.34 ppm. Salinity values ranged from 30.99-31.24 ppt. The pH value ranges from 9.37-9.42. The temperature value ranges from 27.87-27.69 °C. The brightness value ranges from 3.12 m-3.39 m. The turbidity value ranged from 0.63-1.22. The nitrate value of 1.98-2.19 mg/L, far exceeding the limit set (0.06 mg/L) for marine life, indicates a potential risk to the ecosystem. The concentration of Nitrite in the waters is still in accordance with the general water standards, ranging from <0.005 mg/L to 0.02 mg/L. The concentration of Ammonia is below the water quality standard threshold at all points of 0.3 mg/L, which is still safe for marine life and aquaculture activities in these waters in accordance with the seawater quality standards in Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 Attachment VIII concerning the Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management. Abstract

The research purposes were to determine the best initial weight of Caulerpa lentillifera algae, determine the appropriate cultural operational depth for the best growth of C.lentillifera algae, and determine the interaction between the initial weight factor of C.lentillifera algae and the depth factor of growth. This research was carried out from May to July 2023. The C. lentillifera algae in this research were obtained from nature. C.lentillifera algae culture is carried out using the verticulture method, namely tying the algae to strings arranged in a row. This research was designed using a 3x3 factorial in a Completely Randomized Design (RAL). There are 2 factors tested in this experiment, each of which has 3 levels, namely: the weight factor of C. lentillifera algae which consists of: A1 = 50 grams, A2 = 100 grams and A3 = 150 grams, and the depth factor which consists of: B1 = 20 cm, B2 = 70 cm and B3 = 120 cm. The results obtained from this research are that differences in the growth of C. lentillifera algae are very significantly influenced by differences in the initial weight of different. The best absolute growth, relative growth, and daily growth rate were initial C. lentillifera algae weights of 50 grams, which respectively had the highest average values of 24.3 grams, 16.2%, and 1.4%. Differences in depth had no significant influence on differences in absolute growth, relative growth, and daily growth rate of the algae C. lentillifera. The results of variance analysis showed that the influence of the weight factor of C. lentillifera on absolute growth, relative growth, and daily growth rate did not change significantly when the depth factor level was changed. Abstract

Cultivation of catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in tarpaulin ponds is a superior choice due to its flexibility and efficiency, but the optimal stocking density still requires further study. This study aimed to analyze the effect of different stocking densities on the production of catfish cultivated in tarpaulin ponds. The study was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with three stocking density treatments: 50 fish/container (Treatment A), 100 fish/container (Treatment B), and 150 fish/container (Treatment C). Parameters measured included absolute length, absolute weight, and water quality. The results showed that stocking density significantly affected the absolute length and weight of fish. Treatment A produced the highest absolute length (16.92 cm) and weight (63.36 grams), followed by Treatment B (15.92 cm; 55.16 grams) and Treatment C (14.32 cm; 49.88 grams). Water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, nitrate, and ammonia generally remained within the safe range in all treatments, although quality decreased at higher stocking densities. Abstract

The need for high-quality natural feed for fish farming and aquaculture industry is increasing along with the rapid growth of the fisheries sector worldwide. However, the problem faced is the great dependence on the availability of worms from nature so that silk worm cultivation is very important to ensure the availability of quality natural feed for fish farming. This study aims to determine the effect of the use of synthetic substrates made from different materials on the productivity and absolute weight growth of silk worms, as well as to determine the effectiveness of harvesting in each treatment and business analysis. This experiment was designed in a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 treatments which are: P1 (Cotton substrate),  P2 (Net substrate), and K (as control).  Each treatment was quadriplicated and the data analysis was run in One-way ANOVA for CRD. Worms were kept for 30 days with the results of silk worm productivity. The highest productivity figures were in P2 with a value of 689.48 ± 52.80 g / m2 / cycle and K 622.52 ± 121.60 g / m2 / cycle. Statistical tests showed that there was no significant effect (sig.>0.05) of substrate use on silkworm productivity. Absolute weight growth K 12.75±12.25 g/m2/cycle, P1 13.5±7.59 g/m2/cycle, P2 19.5±5.32 g/m2/cycle. Water quality parameters during the study period ranged from optimal values. Business analysis was assumed and the results of the business analysis obtained were loss and not feasible. It can be concluded that the synthetic substrate used did not provide significant benefits in silkworm cultivation. Keywords: Silkworms, Substrate Synthesis, Productivity

Abstract

The quality of river water is an important concern in environmental health, especially related to pathogen bacterial contamination. The Maros River, located in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi Province, is used as a water source for various community needs. This study aimed to identify the presence of Escherichia coli bacteria and analyze the water quality of the Maros River based on microbiological and physicochemical parameters. Water samples were taken from three locations (upstream, middle, and downstream) and analyzed for E. coli colony count, pH, temperature, and turbidity. The results showed that the water of the Maros River was contaminated with E. coli bacteria, with the highest concentration found at the downstream site (2.5x104 CFU/100 mL), followed by the middle site (1.8x104 CFU/100 mL) and the upstream site (4.2x103 CFU/100 mL). Increased turbidity and temperature were also recorded at the downstream site. This decline in water quality is caused by pollution from domestic and industrial waste. Based on these results, better waste management is necessary to maintain water quality and public health.  Keywords: Escherichia coli, water quality, pollution, Maros River, waste management

Abstract

The black ghost fish (Apteronotus albifrons) is a freshwater ornamental fish with a distinctive knife-like shape (Knife fish). Its unique shape makes it have high economic value in the market. However, the growth rate and high mortality of this fish are obstacles for cultivators. The main focus of this study was to determine the effect of providing different types of feed on the growth and survival of black ghost fish (A. albifrons) seeds. The study was conducted at the Mina Mustika Fish Farming Group, Bekasi City, for 45 days using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The treatment consisted of three types of feed, namely natural feed (Tubifex sp.) (P1), a combination of natural feed (Tubifex sp.) + commercial feed (PF100) (P2), and commercial feed (PF100) (P3), with three replications in each treatment. The parameters observed were absolute length growth, absolute weight, specific growth rate (SGR), and survival rate (SR). The measurement of water quality parameters was carried out as a form of attention to supporting factors for the study. The findings showed that the combination feed treatment (P2) provided the highest growth in length, weight, and specific growth rate with absolute length values ​​(4.36 cm), absolute weight (3.73 gr), and SGR (4.67%), followed by natural feed (P1) providing absolute length (4.09 cm), absolute weight (3.39 gr), and SGR (4.54%), and the lowest commercial feed (P3) providing absolute length (3.37 cm), absolute weight (2.50 gr), and SGR (3.91%). The highest survival rate (SR) was found in the natural feed treatment at 94%, followed by commercial feed at 93%, and combination feed at 91%. In general, water quality during the research period was in the optimal range to support the growth and survival of black ghost fish (A. albifrons) seeds.
