Abstract

This study aimed to test the construct of children’s happiness based on situations and parties that make children happy. The instrument is developed based on previous qualitative research in the form of multiple choices statements using smiling emoticons of different sizes. The subjects were 88 children aged 4-6 years in Sleman, Yogyakarta. Results of exploratory factor analysis show that the antecedent of children’s happiness based on situations is composed of eight factors--doing useful activities, fun activities, entertaining situations, getting attention/things liked, family gathering, and drawing. The parties who play a role in children's happiness are their closest parties (mother, siblings, and God), their closest surrounding environment (father and friends), and other close environment outside nuclear family. Our findings can be used as a reference to measure children's happiness in the Indonesian context so that strategies can be designed to increase children's happiness through effective policies, educational practices, and parenting.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic changed many aspects of life, including learning process. Distance learning has been implemented as a response to the pandemic. These changes have a psychological impact on students. This study aims to explore the role of gratitude as a mediator in the relationship between social support and resiliency among students during distance learning. This study used quantitative method to 42 students (M=21,5). The study found that, while gratitude is not meaningful mediating variabel accounting for the relationship between social support and resilience, perceived social support predicts higher levels of resilience and gratitude among students participating in distance learning. While few participants reported that they adjusted well with the shift of learning mode, common challenges faced by participants which necessitates resilience in distance learning include: less enthusiasm in learning due to limited social interaction, poor time management, and exhaustion due to prolong exposure to screen.

Abstract

Parents require parenting self-efficacy to optimally perform parental tasks and responsibilities. Family structure is a powerful predictor of self-efficacy in parenting. This study aims to compare parenting self-efficacy for mothers from nuclear families compared to those from extended families. The sample size was 149 early adult mothers obtained through accidental sampling, of which 88 participants were from nuclear families. Participants completed The Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale. The findings indicate that mothers from nuclear families had significantly stronger parenting self-efficacy than those from extended families. The result highlights that mothers in nuclear families can provide a more comfortable learning environment and therefore enforce consistent parenting standards than mothers in extended families.

Abstract

The popularity of K-pop in Indonesia is steadily growing each year, highlighting the importance of studies to explore psychological dynamics. This study focuses on investigating the role of fandom identity (fan community identity) and personality according to the Big Five model in relation to celebrity worship among Indonesia K-pop fans. The research participants consisted of 716 K-pop enthusiasts in Indonesia (Mage =20.78; SDage =1.57) selected through purposive sampling. Participants completed the Celebrity Attitude Scale, BFI-2 Short Version, and Fandom Identity Scale. The result did not meet the assumptions for regression analysis, thus Spearman correlation tests were conducted for analysis. The results indicate a significant relationship between fandom identity and celebrity worship, with only the neuroticism personality found to have a low correlation with celebrity worship. The study suggests that fandom identity is more associated with celebrity worship behavior than personality traits, therefore fanaticism is more linked to group actions than individual tendencies.

Abstract

Work engagement is a crucial factor in employee performance. Leadership style is one of the factors that determine work engagement. Leaders, thus, need to adapt their leadership style to the preference of their employees. This research offers mengayomi (nurturing) leadership as a suitable style in Indonesian society. Specifically, the present study seeks to understand the relationship between mengayomi leadership style with work engagement moderated by gender. This research uses quantitative methods. This study involved 164 employees in Jakarta as respondents who were selected using convenience sampling. Data analysis was performed using regression technique. The results showed that mengayomi (nurturing)  leadership significantly improves work engagement. Furthermore, the effect was observed to be stronger among male participants. This findings suggest that organizations should promote and train leaders in mengayomi leadership to enhance employee engagement, and consider gender differences to tailor leadership approaches more effectively.

Abstract

The number of woman-headed households in Indonesia is increasing every year, and many of them experience a decreased in well-being due to factors such as intrapersonal conflict in family management, financial instability, increased parental burden as a single parent, and social prejudice. Spirituality could be one of their coping strategies. This study aims to reveal the experience of positive spiritual coping of woman-headed households in achieving their happiness. A snowball sampling technique was applied to recruit ten woman participants (30–48 years old) who had been heads of household for at least two years. This qualitative research used a phenomenological design with thematic analysis. The results of the study revealed that participants’ spiritual coping facilitated resilience and happiness attainment. Two main themes emerged from participants’ responses: positive spirituality coping and self-happiness that develops from adaptive mental processes. In contrast to previous studies, the results of this study elucidate positive spiritual coping as a pivotal factor in fostering mothers’ happiness. This is achieved through the cultivation of positive mindsets, attitudes, and emotions, even amids challenging living circumstances and the demands of independence.

Abstract

The present article responds to an editorial note in Jurnal Psikologi Ulayat, written by Lestari (2021), to further advocate the need to promote critical tradition in conducting qualitative research in psychology in Indonesia. Central in this article is to discuss (1) why critical tradition is vital for qualitative research in Indonesia; and (2) how we articulate critical tradition to our research practices. Drawing on the concepts of phronesis, epistemological violence, and ontological violence, I offer a discussion on the need to develop analyses to address societal issues. By situating the analysis within the socio-historical context of the discipline, the argument of the paper seeks to highlight the centrality of pluralism of approach in psychology to re-centre the role of indigenous people as the subject of the research, instead of the object. Finally, this article offers six ways to enhance the quality of doing qualitative research with indigenous groups in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

There is no one-size-fits-all psychological approach, especially in understanding the wide diversity of cultural contexts. Therefore, the development of psychology must be culturally attuned to the societal context. This commentary article aims to advocate the adoption of a relationship-based approach in the development and application of psychology in Indonesia. The article systematically presents thoughts on implementing relationship-based approaches in both psychological research and practices, with the intent to encourage readers to embrace a culturally sensitive perspective, particularly regarding collectivistic values, in understanding, researching, practicing, and advancing psychology in Indonesia. As one of the societies with the highest levels of collectivism globally, a relationship-based approach is crucial to consider in strengthening the role of psychology that aligns with the societal fabric.

Abstract

The Male Role Norms Inventory-Short Form (MRNI-SF) scale is a widely used international scale for measuring traditional masculinity ideaology. Recently, it has begun to be utilized in Indonesia, where significant gender disparities in access to education and employment persist. Despite its increasing use, there is a notable lack of research specifically addressing the psychometric properties of the Indonesian adaptation of the MRNI-SF. This study aims to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of the MRNI-SF. Data were collected from a total of 346 student participants at various universities in Indonesia and analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EF) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The indicates that the Indonesian version of the MRNI-SF Scale accurately and reliably measure traditional masculinity ideology within the Indonesian context. Furthermore, the results show a high degree of similarity between the Indonesian version and the original scale.
