Tell : Teaching of English Language and Literature Journal (e-ISSN 2657-2443 and p-ISSN: 2338-8927) is a journal of English Language Teaching (ELT), linguistics, and literature published in April and September by English Education Department of Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya. This journal is committed to investigate and scrutinize present issues of ELT, linguistics and literature. Contributions in the forms of research-based and literature-review studies written by national and international scholars and researchers are welcomed. High quality of studies presenting the State of the Art (SOTA) and originality is preferable.

The GI or group investigation is one of the cooperative learning teaching method and little used in English language teaching classroom. In GI students take an active part in establishing their learning goals. A method which ask the students to choose the topic selection, plan, implement, analyze, present, and evaluate. This paper reports a study of implementing the GI method in teaching speaking for the 10th grade students‟ at SMAN 1 Paciran Lamongan. Here, the students still have difficulty in using their English orally. One of the reasons is the lack of confidence they have when they should speak in front of the classroom, so they hope to have a partner to discuss with in order to be more confident to speak up. GI is the right solution to solve the students‟ speaking problem. A descriptive research method is used to get the finding of the study, observation checklist, questionnaire, and practical test are the instruments used to collect the data. The data shows that students are strongly increasing in speaking English from 47.2% to 66.6%. Key words: Speaking ability, The GI method

AbstractThe Dante Club is an American historical fiction written by Matthew Pearl. Thestory takes place in the state of Massachusetts during the aftermath of theAmerican Civil War. The two major issues presented in the novel are xenophobia and anti-Catholicism. Specifically, it tells about a controversy over the Italian literary work, “Divine Comedyâ€, which is being translated into English by a group of notable poets named Dante Club. Their endeavor is considered as promoting Catholicism which is subjectively interpreted as an act of threatening the state. Based on Louis Althusser’s theoretical perspective, the work of the state authorities to hinder the group’s effort is seen as the manifestation of ideological practice. The theory points out that such an interference may commonly be found to be performed by two types of powerful institution, namely Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) and Repressive State Apparatuses (RSAs).This study discusses the practice of state ideology which is intended to maintain the state power as described in the novel. The focus is on answering the question of how ISAs and RSAs are authorized to exert their role to control people as well as to influence them on behalf of the state.Keywords: Ideology, Ideological State Apparatuses, Repressive State Apparatuses, Divine Comedy

It is seen that there is an existence of gender-stereotype that unwittingly occurred in children's literature. The gender-stereotype of how man and woman should be and behave considering on his/her proper activities in a real life might be portrayed throughout the symbolizations in which numerous readers do not understand what they are about, whereas those symbols of gender-stereotype are teaching the children the concept of masculinity and femininity. This study thus scrutinizes the symbols of gender-stereotype in Hans Christian Andersen‟s The Little Mermaid. The data analysis is in the form of symbols which have the issues of gender-stereotype taken from the original fairy tale of The Little Mermaid in 1836. The aims of this study are to find out the symbols of gender-stereotype and describe the meaning of each symbol. Utilizing descriptive qualitative method, the results of this study are the symbols which have the gender-stereotype of masculinity are “King†related to non-emotional and intellectuality in authority of a man. “Knife†is found allied to the masculinity trait of a strong man and “Sword†is an analogue of a brave, adventurous and intellectual man. Moreover, the symbols of femininity found are the “Mermaid or Siren†is interwoven to such the embodiment of a flirtatious woman. “Long Hair†is germane to a loyal and submissive woman. AbstractThis research discusses two of the strategies proposed by Machali which are applied by the translators in translating the Indonesian news texts on the official website of The Indonesian Republic Government Secretariat into the English news texts on the same website. The strategies are transposition and modulation. Research statements of this research are (1) how is the transposition strategy in translating the texts on the official website of The Indonesian Republic Government Secretariat Ministry (2) how is the modulation strategy in translating the texts on the official website of The Indonesian Republic Government Secretariat Ministry. The data collection method in this research are reading and note taking methods that are reading and taking notes the data based on Machali’s strategies. Then, the collected data are analyzed by identifying the transposition and modulation strategies applied by the translators and described them in words. From the analysis of the data the researcher concludes that in translating the Indonesian source texts into the English target texts, the translators apply the two strategies or procedures among the five strategies proposed by Machali. They are transposition and modulation. Transposition strategy is more dominant than modulation strategy.Keywords: strategy, translation, transposition, modulation, accuracy

ABSTRACTThis paper is aimed at analyzing the sleeping beauty fairy tale using Vladimir Propp’sfunctions of dramatis personae. The analysis utilizes thirty one functions, however, not all that functions occur in a tale. These functions create a main framework in the story (Propp, 1968:25—65). The analysis reveals similarity between The Sleeping Beauty with any other folktale which came from Rusia. There are thirty one functions of dramatis personae which can be distributed into seven spheres of actions. From these seven spheres of actions, there are seven characters that usually appear in the fairy tales. But in The Sleeping Beauty there are only five characters since there is no helper and false hero in this story.Keywords: Sleeping Beauty, functions of dramatis personae, seven spheres of actions

This research was conducted to investigate the types of metaphor and analyze the illocutionary meaning of the metaphors in the dialogues in the novel of V.S. Naipaul‘s A House for Mr. Biswas. This research aimed to get clear descriptions of the types of metaphor found in the novel, the implied meaning of the metaphors, the author‘s motive and the possible connection with British colonialism and slavery. Descriptive qualitative approach was used in conducting the research. Meanwhile, pragmatics was applied as the frame of the study. The data used in this research were the metaphors found in the dialogues. The research was conducted by classifying the types of metaphor, describing the context of the utterance, interpreting the illocutionary meaning, and analyzing the metaphors using postcolonial perspective.It was found twenty one metaphors, which were categorized into six types they were: dead, ordinary, cliché, standard, image, and original metaphor. It was also found that some metaphors in the dialogues represented the psychological condition of the postcolonial people, they were oppression, alienation and depression. The research also presented at least three evidences which led to the conclusion that the story was a symbolic representation of British colonialism and slavery.Key Words: Metaphor, pragmatics, colonialism, postcolonial

AbstractAs a mirror of real life, literature contains things happening in the life of human beings and their surroundings. A careful study of literary works represents a way to add experience about life and also to gain knowledge about human life with all of their problems. The two novels being discusses in this article are Oscar Wilde‟s The Picture of Dorian Grayand Robert Louis Stevenson‟s Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde.This article will be analyzed by using Carl Gustav Jung‟s archetypes theory in order to make a comparative study through both of those novels. Thus, this study concerns to Jung‟s archetypes of persona and shadow. The method of the research is descriptive text analysis. At the same time, the article writer also used comparative study. It was due to the aims of this study, which was to compare two literary works of the same country.The results of this study show the different achievements of persona and shadow through the representation of the characters of Dorian Gray in The Picture of Dorian Gray and Dr. Henry Jekyll in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The similarity of the two novels lies on the theme namely ways on fulfilling one‟s desire toward physical condition, while the differences are lie in the ways to achieve the goals of the main characters. In Wilde‟s The Picture of Dorian Gray, the main character, Dorian Gray fails to achieve his physical perfectness of eternal youth because he did it in naturally, he trades his soul to get it. In Stevenson‟s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll successes to achieve his insane experiment to release the good side and bad side of human in the form of different appearance. Then the writer comes to the conclusion that to attain his goal and desire. Firstly, he must be aware of the effect for the things he did. It means that an individual must be responsible for his own decision to do what he thinks is right. Secondly, one must sincerely accept the power of nature. It means that an individual has to be able to overcome the temptation that comes to him/her related to physical condition to achieve their acceptance toward nature‟s gift. By having these two factors, an individual will be able to achieve his or her acceptance toward the power of nature and accept what God has given him or her and live good life.Keywords: Archetypes, Persona, and Shadow.
