Abstract

This present study starts from the basic question of the meaning, essence, and existence of Islamic education in experiencing global phenomena and the complexity of national issues that should be responded appropriately. Experience-based education has been deemed to be one of alternatives in developing teaching and learning processes that combine the basic concept of education with the primary essence of human beings. This essence denotes the teaching and learning process that presents various facts of life and regards humans’ skills to improve. This study used phenomenological approach to describe the concept of experience-based education that came to the surface from the education pattern of humanism demonstrated by the Western pragmatism. The deductive method was employed to explain definitions specifically, whereas the inductive one was applied to understand the process based on the particular data, and the presented data were concluded in general. The research findings reveal that experience-based education refers to the teaching and learning process that is actively carried out by providing dialogical relationship patterns. In these patterns, teachers play a pivotal role as a facilitator to explore and enhance their students’ potential by designing experience-based learning that is able to stimulate them to think and act. It is implemented by constructing experience to promote the students based on the integration of science and Islamic values. As a result, the teaching and learning process is always in line with the functions and objectives of education.

Abstract

This paper aims to offer a comprehensive idea for one of the issues of Indonesia’s education, particularly in Islamic education. The issues deal with low student achievement as well as the phenomenon of teacher situated in a mechanistic curriculum, through motivation theories proposed by Abraham Maslow and David McClelland. A qualitative approach was designed in this library research. The study employed discourse analysis and cultural analysis as the methods of data analysis regarding the reality of Indonesia’s education. This study promotes the urgency of enhancing students’ motivation in experiencing Islamic education, either by fulfilling five basic needs as suggested in the Maslow’s theory or by fostering need for achievement (nAch) as portrayed in the McClelland’s theory, to explore the national education problems. This study depicts that motivation constitutes the main factor that significantly contributes to students’ achievement. It, likewise, denotes the students’ abilities in developing learning materials through their creativity and innovations in terms of their own potential, specifically for Islamic education

Abstract

Mitoni is a Javanese tradition that performs special rituals. This tradition highlights a philosophical meaning for Javanese women, particularly educational values for a baby in the womb. Concerning its development, these values have shifted from its original meaning promoted by both native Javanese women and Javanese santri (students in Islamic boarding schools) women. This present study aims to explore educational values for the baby during Mitoni. A descriptive study of continuity was employed in this research. The findings reveal three characteristics of Javanese women’s perspectives on this tradition based on their subjects, namely: 1) formalistic-traditionalist Islamic view, 2) semi-formalistic-traditionalist Islamic view, and 3) pure Islamic view. Meanwhile, Mitoni, the Javanese tradition, proposes several educational values for the baby according to the Javanese santri women in Pati, Central Java. First, Mitoni provides the baby with the recognition basis of tauheed (oneness of Allah). Second, it enhances parents or prospective parents’ spirit when they educate the baby during pregnancy. Third, this tradition emerges as their effort to give good nutrition for the baby, especially in the seventh month-period of pregnancy. Lastly, Mitoni also demonstrates meaningful understanding for current young generations to preserve this cultural Javanese tradition so as to exist in the future

Abstract

Islam constitutes the perfect and universal religion for a lifetime that has the vision of guiding human beings for better life. Islam is the religion that becomes a blessing for the whole universe. It is in line with the mission of Islamic teachings, which is to protect humans from all the forms of anarchy and injustice. At the level of values, Islam completely models kindness and noble morality as well as prohibits all bad behavior, violence, or cruelty. The dream of ideal morality in Islam is to build the world, in which both Muslims and non-Muslims live in justice, peace, love, and harmony. The dream of morality becomes the responsibility of all elements of society, particularly religious figures and intellectuals to catch moral messages of religion that are able to promote harmonious life in plurality. At this level, character education also possesses a pivotal role in achieving the dream of Islam so that Muslims have pluralistic mindset. As a result, Muslims understand the definition, characteristics, and mission of Islam so that they do not need to bring the name of Islam for the sake of individual, group, or political party. Likewise, there will be no more extreme views that demonstrate the name of Islam aimed at committing the actions of terrorism, in which Islam is regarded as the religion performing terrorism.

Abstract

This present study explores the practices of teaching and learning Arabic among Muslim minorities by using the approach of modernity principles. A qualitative descriptive approach was designed in this research. It was conducted in West Papua, which covered five regencies and one city. The findings demonstrate that the instruction served in a number of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Mayamuk, Aimas, Waisai, Teminabuan, Kaimana, Waigom, and Misol was carried out in a structured manner. In these seven locations, Islamic education that adopted a language skill-based instructional framework was presented by applying a communicative approach among santri (pesantren students). The language component fostered among santri was Arabic expressions without any special emphasis on the mastery of grammar. The pesantren atmosphere equipped with a boarding school for santri as a place to stay facilitated interactions among them as well as the instructors to practice their language skills. The skills were situated in the learning context and the accompanying environment. The existing social aspects were then used to mediate the teaching and learning process. The study also reveals that the variety of learning objectives determining the aspects of the approach and methodology affects Arabic instruction in the pesantren settings. It implies that not only does pesantren internalize a religious spirit, but it also promotes Indonesia based on the spirit of nationalism.

Local pig hunting is usually done to identify the core of pest location by using simple utilities. Conversely, massive pig hunting is done by involving many people massively and using more complete utilities as well as systematic steps. In fact, in its realization, there are some deviations done by Ponre people which against the Islamic law, such as doing some rituals that contain the elements of animism and dynamism before doing the process of pig hunting. Abstract

This paper offers the concept of ‘creative education’ by employing an Islamic approach. In the Islamic perspective, creative education highlights two concepts, namely: “bid’ah” and “ijtihad”. The meaning of these two concepts leads to several debates. This present study, therefore, tries to describe both the concepts so as to develop students’ creative thinking skills in teaching and learning processes. This study promotes several endeavors that can be done by teachers to enhance the skills. Firstly, the teachers should be able to synergize their students’ potential in terms of “ruh”, “nafs”, “qalb”, and “aql” so that they emerge as individuals with the power of “mujtahid”. Secondly, they have to be capable of providing their students with an “ijtihadi” stimulus that may trigger the students’ critical thinking skills by stimulating them to address questions. Thirdly, the teachers are expected to provide their students with chances of having ijtihad to explore lots of received information and new knowledge and convey their ideas and thoughts in a public space. Another effort is that they are expected to be able to manage meaningful opportunities to their students in order to perform creative thinking. It illustrates that the students may deliver a wide array of perspectives for a certain issue discussed. Finally, the teachers demonstrate positive appreciation for all the students’ responses by regarding the principle that they attain two points for their appropriate response and one point for their inappropriate one dealing with the result of the students’ ijtihad
