Abstract

This article analyzes Syarafuddin al-Musawi’s criticism of the authority of the hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah by focusing on the problem of the epistemological validity of hadith criticism in contemporary hadith studies. This research departs from the lack of systematic mapping of the basis of al-Musawi’s argumentation and from the limitations of previous studies, which tend to situate his criticism solely within the framework of Sunni-Shia polemics without critically examining its methodological construction. The research aims to identify al-Musawi’s argumentation patterns, evaluate its evidence base, and assess its contribution to the development of modern hadith studies. This research uses a qualitative method based on literature studies with a historical-critical approach and critical hermeneutics. The primary source of research is al-Musawi’s works on Abu Hurairah, while secondary sources include classical hadith literature, rijal books, and contemporary academic studies. The data was analyzed through three stages: classification of the theme of criticism, comparison with classical hadith sources, and historical evaluation of the socio-political context of the hadith narration. The results of the study show that al-Musawi’s criticism is divided into three main aspects, namely biographical criticism of Abu Hurairah’s credibility, quantitative criticism of the number of hadiths narrated, and socio-historical criticism of the relationship between hadith authority and political patronage in the early days of Islam. This study also found that al-Musawi’s argument makes an important contribution to opening up a space for critical reading of the construction of hadith-narration authority, especially through the use of historical and socio-political approaches. However, some of his arguments remain indicative, as they are not fully supported by comprehensive sanad verification and adequate historical evidence of the direct relationship between political power and the production of hadith history. This article concludes that al-Musawi’s criticism does not represent a total rejection of Abu Hurairah, but rather an attempt to reconstruct the study of hadith to be more open to multidisciplinary approaches and historical-critical evaluation.

Abstract

The classical Islamic division of the world into dar al-Islam (the abode of Islam) and dar al-harb (the abode of war) has long been treated as a foundational doctrine of Islamic international law. Yet a systematic examination of the primary sources reveals a critical anomaly, these terms are absent from the authenticated hadith corpus and only crystallized as juridical categories between the 2nd and 4th centuries AH, as tools of Abbasid imperial administration rather than expressions of prophetic ethics. This article therefore, aims to trace the genealogy of this dichotomy in classical siyar literature and to redefine it based on prophetic ethical principles derived from the Hadith, offering an alternative paradigm more compatible with the Maqasid al-Sunnah. This study employs two complementary methods: a historical-genealogical analysis of al-Shaybani's al-Siyar al-Kabir and al-Sarakhsi's Sharh al-Siyar al-Kabir to deconstruct the imperial logic of classical territorial constructions; and a thematic reading of the Hadith using the Maqasid al-Sunnah approach as formulated by al-Qaradawi, operationalized through three sequential procedures: situating each hadith within its historical causes and circumstances (asbab al-wurud); distinguishing the contextual means (wasilah) from its permanent ethical goal (hadaf); and verifying the original meaning of key terms within their 2nd-century AH socio-legal register. This method yields four permanent prophetic principles: 'adl (justice), wafa' bi al-'ahd (treaty fidelity), aman (security), and sulh (peace), which form the normative basis of a new paradigm: fiqh al-'ahd wa al-akhlaq (jurisprudence of covenant and ethics). This paradigm reconceptualizes Muslim-non-Muslim relations not through territorial identity, but through ethical conduct and covenantal commitment, a framework demonstrably more consistent with both the prophetic Sunnah and the modern international system than the imperial-era dar dichotomy it replaces.

Abstract

This research examines the semantic dimensions of the term ikhlāṣ in the Qur’an and its interpretation within Sufi exegetical discourse. This study is motivated by the semantic development of ikhlāṣ, particularly the distinction between its lexical meaning and its technical-religious meaning in Islamic discourse. Addressing this issue academically is crucial, as a proper understanding of Ikhlas significantly influences a Muslim's practice of worship ( ubudiyyah ). The aim is to identify the interpretations and categories of Qur'anic verses related to Ikhlas through semantic and Sufi lenses. Using qualitative methods with a semantic approach, data were collected from various linguistic derivatives of the term in the Qur'an. This analysis uses Tafsir Al-Wajiz for contextual exploration and Tafsir Ruh Al-Ma'ani for Sufi depth. The findings indicate that although the masdar (gerund) form of Ikhlas is absent in the Qur'an, its conceptual essence exists through various noun and verb variants. This study concludes that Ikhlas encompasses two dimensions: the literal meaning in non-ritual contexts and the technical meaning related to worship, Such as the meanings of solitude, being chosen, pure milk, and other linguistic meanings. In the context of worship, ikhlas means purifying one's devotion solely for the sake of Allah. Furthermore, Sufi interpretation emphasizes spiritual depth, where the meaning of sincerity is shaped by the spiritual attainments of its practitioners.

Abstract

The low literacy of the Qur’an in the digital era is not solely due to limited access to sacred texts, but mainly to the absence of interactive, adaptive, and contextual interpretation learning platforms. This study conducted a conceptual design analysis and epistemological framework of MAQTAF (Qur’an Analysis and Interactive Interpretation Engine), an artificial intelligence (AI)-based innovation designed to strengthen the ummah’s understanding of the Qur’an. Using a qualitative approach based on literature reviews, this study does not develop or test functional prototypes. Still, it rather systematically describes the design architecture, the operational mechanisms of AI (including natural language processing with retrieval-augmented generation and adaptive learning through collaborative filtering), and the integration of the maqāṣid al-syarī'ah classifier as an ethical filter. The findings of the study present three novelties: (1) the simultaneous combination of verse/interpretation analysis, interactive adaptive learning, and thematic multimedia content, an integration that is not found on existing linear platforms; (2) The operationalization of maqāṣid as a supervised learning-based classifier that evaluates the output of tafsir into five dimensions ḥifẓ al-dīn, al-nafs, al-'aql, al-nasl, al-māl; and (3) the formulation of AI as an epistemological support tool rather than a substitute for scientific authority through a three-layer validation mechanism (data sources, algorithms, and scholarly supervision). As a conceptual design study, MAQTAF offers an ex ante framework that requires future empirical validation through design-based research and expert assessment. Thus, this research contributes to strengthening digital Islamic literacy and encourages a deeper understanding of the Qur’an, which is ethically responsible and relevant to the context of modern society.

Abstract

This article examines the development of theoretical studies in Qur'anic interpretation in Indonesia, which focus on the dynamics of academic interpretation in Islamic higher education institutions. The study of interpretation in Indonesia has deep historical roots, dating back to the spread of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago and the growth of local intellectual traditions. Since its inception, Qur'anic interpretation has been conducted through various methods and approaches, ranging from traditional to modern and involving the use of supporting disciplines such as hermeneutics, linguistics, semantics, and semiotics. This paper traces the history of interpretation in the Indonesian archipelago, beginning with the spread of Islam by scholars and religious figures, and the emergence of early exegetical works, such as Abd. Rauf as-Singkili's Tarjuman al-Mustafid, and the subsequent emergence of exegetical works in Malay, Javanese, and other local languages. This article also reviews the development of exegesis in Indonesia in the 20th century and beyond, including Howard M. Federspiel's periodization of exegetical works into three generations. Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia play a vital role in fostering innovation in the methodology, approaches, and models of tafsir studies, thereby enriching the scholarly tradition of tafsir in Indonesia and strengthening the Muslim community's response to the Qur'an as the primary source of Islamic teachings.
