Abstract

Studies of Qur'anic interpretation in academic tradition generally focus on written interpretations, while oral exegesis, despite their significance in religious practice, are still relatively rarely studied systematically. Oral exegesis are communicative, situational, and contextual in nature, requiring separate analysis to understand their structure and dynamics. This study aims to formulate Gus Mus’s oral exegesis through a conceptual approach that combines the context of delivery, interpretation structure, reference sources, and interpretation strategies. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical design through thematic analysis of oral exegesis, which is operationalized through a process of transcription, open coding, categorization, and identification of interpretive patterns and themes. The research data consists of transcripts sourced from recordings of Gus Mus’s al-Ibrīz interpretation lectures, collected through audio-visual documentation and other relevant supporting sources. The results of the study show that Gus Mus’s oral exegesis is constructed through a complex analysis method, in which the text of the Qur'an, scholarly tradition, the interpreter's historical experience, and the socio-cultural context of the audience interact simultaneously. Intratextual and intertextual approaches strengthen the coherence and legitimacy of meaning, while the dimensions of locality, affirmative and critical commentary, and recontextualization ensure relevance and effective communication with the audience. The findings of this study offer a new conceptual framework in the study of oral exegesis, enriching contemporary Qur'anic interpretation studies and opening up opportunities for further research on the oral exegesis practices of other figures and written interpretations.

Abstract

This study critically analyzes Lathaif al-Ahadits al-Nabawiyah (1926), a unique hadith compilation authored by Abdul Latif Syakur, a reformist scholar from early 20th-century Minangkabau. The research problem focuses on how this work reflects local Islamic intellectualism and reformist thought through its unconventional structure and socio-religious content. Using a qualitative socio-historical approach that combines textual criticism and interpretive analysis, the study draws on two extant volumes of the book and relevant secondary literature. The findings reveal that Syakur employed an innovative alphabetical arrangement of hadiths based on the Arabic verb prefix in the matn, and incorporated Malay-Jawi commentary to make the text accessible to the local Muslim audience. Thematically, the book addresses issues of ritual, ethics, gender, and social reform, reflecting the author's moderate stance in navigating the tensions between traditionalism and modernism. The study concludes that Lathaif al-Ahadits al-Nabawiyah represents an important contribution to localized Islamic knowledge production in Southeast Asia and exemplifies how vernacular scholarship engaged with both classical traditions and modern social contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the intellectual influence of Ahmad Hasan on Abdul Qadir Hasan in the field of hadith studies within the Islamic Union (PERSIS). The research argues that their relationship extends beyond familial ties of father and son, as it also embodies both the continuity and transformation of intellectual thought within Indonesia’s modern Islamic scholarship. Based on this assumption, the fundamental question that urgently needs to be answered is: how has the intellectual shift within the PERSIS hadith scholarly tradition unfolded as a result of intergenerational influences?  Using a literature-based and historical-intellectual approach, this study finds that Ahmad Hasan emphasized rationality, authenticity of transmission (sanad), and the rejection of weak hadith (ḍa‘īf) as part of his effort to purify Islamic teachings. Meanwhile, Abdul Qadir Hasan institutionalized these ideas through the PERSIS Hisbah Council and Islamic boarding schools, integrating contextual and social dimensions into the application of hadith. This methodological shift reflects a movement from a rational-scriptural to a rational-empirical approach that considers the objectives of Sharia (maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah) and the welfare of the community. The findings reveal that hadith thought within PERSIS has evolved epistemologically by balancing textual authenticity and social relevance. This study is expected to make an academic contribution to the development of contemporary hadith studies in Indonesia, particularly regarding the transformation of hadith methodology within modern Islamic organizations.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of the function of Qur’anic amulets from a means of personal protection to a symbol of domestic spirituality in the Muslim minority community in Pemuteran, Bali. Using a phenomenological qualitative approach and a functional reception theory framework, this study traces how verses from the Qur’an—particularly verses on protection—are written on white cloth and placed on new buildings as a means of divine protection. Data was collected through field observations, documentation of amulet artifacts, and in-depth interviews with religious leaders, amulet writers, homeowners, and local communities. The results show that this practice is not merely a continuation of mystical traditions, but a dynamic manifestation of the Living Qur’an, in which the sacred text interacts with local cultural values, spatial symbolism, and communal identity. The shift in the function of amulets from individual protection to domestic protection reflects changes in spiritual, social, and cultural needs within Muslim communities living in predominantly Hindu environments. This practice also serves as a means of cultural negotiation that allows the community to maintain their Islamic identity while adapting to local Balinese traditions. This study contributes to the development of Living Qur’an studies by emphasizing how the holy text works in the domestic sphere and how Qur’anic symbols play a role in the negotiation of minority identity, spatial security, and cultural sustainability in a multicultural context.

Abstract

Even though the Hadith has a central position as the second main source of Islamic knowledge after the Qur’an, Hadith studies remain marginalized in many Indonesian Islamic universities, often overshadowed by Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic law, and Sufism. This study examines how three leading State Islamic Universities, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, and UIN Alauddin Makassar, have strategically reconfigured their Hadith Science departments in response to both internal demands for academic quality and external pressures from global educational standards. These universities were selected due to their institutional prominence, academic innovations, and representative models of transformation within Indonesia’s State Islamic Religious Higher Education system. This study explores the following questions: (1) how are Hadith Studies departments reconfigured institutionally and academically within these universities? and (2) how do these transformations negotiate between Islamic scientific tradition and global academic standards? Employing qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, policy and document analysis, and field observations, the research identifies four key drivers of revitalization: curricular reform aligned with the KKNI and MBKM frameworks, leadership-driven institutional transformation, integration of digital technologies in Hadith pedagogy, and the establishment of collaborative networks with governmental bodies, religious communities, and international partners. Using a multidisciplinary approach, and drawing primarily on functionalist social theory and Islamic epistemology, the findings reveal that these reforms represent not only academic transformation but also an epistemic negotiation that reconciles religious authenticity with the methodological rigor and global relevance demanded by modern higher education. By harmonizing ʿaqlī (rational) and naqlī (transmitted) traditions, reclaiming intellectual sovereignty through localized innovation, and reorienting curriculum and research practices, this study offers a replicable model for advancing Islamic sciences in other Islamic academic institutions by fostering dialogue between scholarly tradition and contemporary innovation.

Abstract

The emergence of the Muslim middle class in contemporary times faces epistemological and structural challenges, mainly due to the colonial period that reinforced Western epistemology and sidelined science-oriented interpretations. Building upon the rationalist foundations laid by earlier reformist exegetes, Tafsir Al-Jawāhir by Ṭanṭāwī Al-Jawhari attempts to explain the relationship between the Qur'an and science, but often faces criticism from traditionalists. Using a qualitative library research approach and analyzing through the lens of the sociology of science, this study examines how scientific interpretation in Tafsir Al-Jawhari can motivate the Muslim middle class as a catalyst for intellectual renewal, while also identifying obstacles to combining science with Islamic studies. This study outlines three main factors: (1) Tafsir Al-Jawhari functions as a scientific encyclopedia that integrates contemporary science with the Qur'an, encouraging a scientific mentality; (2) Analysis of the decline of Islamic science and a call to revitalize the classical Islamic scientific ethos; (3) The function of tafsir in building a scientific tradition within the Muslim community. The findings suggest that scientific interpretation can serve as a catalyst for social and economic transformation within the Muslim middle class, leading them toward the formation of an engaged scientific community. This research is limited in its ability to ascertain the precise background of the Muslim middle class and the acceptance of this view worldwide. Therefore, additional research is recommended to examine scientific interpretation within specific societal frameworks, such as Indonesia, to gain a deeper understanding of its significance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sufistic meaning of disaster verses in Tafsir Faidl al-Rahman by Kiai Sholeh Darat and identify the characteristics of the sufistic patterns used in its interpretation. This research is a library-based study with a Sufistic approach. The primary source of research data is Tafsir Faidl al-Rahman. In contrast, secondary data is drawn from books, journal articles, and prior research on Kiai Sholeh Darat, Qur’an interpretation, and disaster theology. The results of the study show that Kiai Sholeh Darat interprets disasters not only as physical events that cause suffering but also as instruments of spiritual education and human moral transformation. Through the interpretation of QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 11 and QS. In Al-Baqarah [2]: 155–156, disasters are understood as consequences of spiritual damage, tests of faith, and means of getting closer to Allah SWT. This research also finds that the Sufi orientation in Tafsir Faidl al-Rahman is more appropriately categorized as Sufi Isyari tafsir, which is characterized by an effort to explore the inner meaning of the verse without relinquishing its relationship with the zahir meaning of the Qur’anic text. These findings show that disaster theology from the perspective of Kiai Sholeh Darat is oriented towards spiritual awareness, moral improvement, and social transformation.

Abstract

This study analyzes the reconstruction of puritanism in the understanding of the hisbah hadith in the thought of Ali Mustafa Yaqub and its implications for the practice of amar ma’ruf nahi munkar in the socio-religious context of contemporary Indonesia. This study departs from the phenomenon  of the practice of hisbah that is literally and coercively mobilized in the public space, as seen in various actions of religious groups such as the Islamic Defenders Front, including the rejection of Lady Gaga’s concert in Jakarta in 2012 which led to the threat of violence and the cancellation of the event, as well as a series of acts of destruction against places that were constructed as “nests of disobedience.” Using a qualitative approach through critical literature studies, this study examines Yaqub’s main works, classical hadith literature, and contemporary studies to explore the epistemological and methodological framework of his understanding of the hadith amar ma’ruf nahi munkar. The analysis focuses on the principles of sanad authenticity, matan criticism, and the limitation of moral intervention authority in accordance with the capacities of individuals, society, and the state. The findings of the study show that Yaqub moderately reconstructs the puritanism of hadith by positioning hisbah as an ethical-educational practice oriented towards benefit rather than as an instrument of social judgment. This reconstruction provides a more adaptive and contextual interpretive framework while addressing the rigidity of interpretation and the potential legitimacy of violence in religious practice. Theoretically, this research enriches the study of Islamic hadith and puritanism in Indonesia, and, practically, contributes to the formation of a more inclusive socio-religious ethics amid the complexities of modern Muslim society.

Abstract

Environmental degradation in Indonesia, including deforestation, marine pollution, flooding, and climate-related crises, has become an urgent challenge requiring not only technical solutions but also ethical and religious responses. Although environmental issues have received increasing attention in contemporary Qur’anic studies, existing scholarship generally discusses ecological ethics and Islamic ecotheology separately from the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah framework. Consequently, a comprehensive interpretive model integrating Qur’anic environmental teachings, Islamic ecotheology, and the higher objectives of Islamic law remains underdeveloped. This study aims to formulate a Maqāṣid-Ecological Interpretation Paradigm to address environmental issues and strengthen Qur’anic environmental ethics in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative library research method, the study analyzes Qur’anic verses concerning khalīfah (Q. al-Baqarah [2]:30), fasād (Q. al-Rūm [30]:41), and mīzān (Q. al-Raḥmān [55]:7–9) through a descriptive-analytical approach. Primary data consist of relevant Qur’anic verses, while secondary data are derived from classical and contemporary tafsīr works, studies on maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, Islamic ecotheology, and environmental ethics. The findings reveal that environmental preservation constitutes an integral part of the objectives of Islamic law, particularly the protection of life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), wealth (ḥifẓ al-māl), and future generations (ḥifẓ al-nasl). The integration of khalīfah, mīzān, and fasād provides an ethical framework for addressing deforestation, marine pollution, and the energy crisis. This study proposes the Maqāṣid-Ecological Interpretation Paradigm, which reorients Qur’anic interpretation toward transformative ecological engagement and contributes to the development of sustainable Qur’anic environmental ethics in Indonesia.

Abstract

GLAM institutions (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) face an ethical tension between preserving cultural heritage and providing public access to it. Strict preservation practices may produce restrictive access regimes, while uncontrolled access risks damaging collections. This study aims to formulate an ethical framework to address this tension, constructed from QS. Al-Hijr [15]:9 and QS. Al-Baqarah [2]:159 through interpretation. Using Qualitative library research and thematic interpretation, this article analyzes two key concepts: the custodial mission (Hāfizūn) in QS. Al-Hijr: 9 and the prohibition of concealing knowledge (Yaktumūn) in QS. Al-Baqarah: 159. The analysis shows that QS. Al-Hijr [15]:9 legitimizes preservation ethics, while QS. Al-Baqarah [2]:159 grounds ana ethnics accessibility. The synthesis yields an ethical model that integrates authenticity, integrity, equity, transparency, and controlled access as its core elements. The study offers theological-ethical guidance for GLAM policy and enriches Islamic information ethics, complementing existing secular approaches (Floridi’s information ethics, IFLA/ICA/UNESCO codes) with a theologically grounded perspective relevant to Muslim-majority contexts and to global discourse alike.
