Abstract

This article delves into the interpretation of Pencak Silat, an ancient Indonesian martial art, through the lens of Clifford Geertz's concept of "Blurred Genres." Pencak Silat encompasses a wide array of traditional and modern martial art genres, practiced individually or in duels, with or without musical accompaniment. The study focuses on the cultural, social, and political dimensions of Pencak Silat, particularly its impact on Indonesian society. The article establishes the historical roots of Pencak Silat in Old Malay culture, evolving from the Buddhist-Hindu kingdom of Sriwijaya (seventh to eleventh centuries CE). It explores the martial art's role in shaping national identity during President Soeharto's New Order regime. Pencak Silat served as a vehicle for the promotion of national identity and New Order citizenship. The analysis employs Geertz's three major analogies—Game, Drama, and Text—to interpret Pencak Silat. As a "body cultivation," Silat's presence aligns well with Geertz's tools for interpreting anthropological phenomena.

Abstract

This study examines Cho Nam-joo's Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 through the lens of implicature, focusing on how implied meanings function within the narrative. Drawing upon Grice's theory, the analysis identifies instances within the novel where underlying meanings contribute to the reader's understanding of characters, relationships, and social dynamics. The research explores various types of implicatures, including conventional and conversational, to reveal how they shape the reader's interpretation of events and motivations. Examples include instances of indirect communication within the family and broader societal contexts. The analysis extends to the workplace, revealing how implicatures in the novel expose unspoken assumptions and biases. By decoding these implicatures, the research aims to uncover the subtle yet pervasive ways language enriches the narrative. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how literary texts can use implicature to create nuanced meanings and engage readers on multiple levels.

Abstract

This paper examines the presence of Chinese descendants on Bangka Island, focusing on assimilating the Khek language, spoken by the Hakka community, by studying the hybridization across four sub-districts: Pangkalpinang, Sungaliat, Muntok, and Belinyu. Using the qualitative methods, including interviews and recordings of daily conversations, this paper analyzes the linguistic choices and semantic shifts in Khek by discussing the characteristics of the Khek language. This study has two main objectives: (1) to identify the lexical patterns and meaning of the Khek language in everyday use, and (2) to explore the socio-historical factors influencing Khek’s development on Bangka island. Findings show significant language assimilation between Khek and Bangka Malay, shaped by the socio-historical interactions. This research contributes to understanding the linguistic assimilation process and the mutual influence of speech communities in a multilingual context, shedding light on the mutual influence of language communities and the preservation of linguistic identity amid assimilation.

Abstract

Teaching by emphasizing the disciplines to the students sometimes was judged as old school method especially for generation Z students. The aim of this research was to investigate the perceptions and responses of the students generation Z toward disciplined English teacher in English language teaching the material. This research used mix method where the participants were 168 students from semi-military campus. To acquire the distribution of students’ response toward disciplined English teacher in teaching English language, this research used questionnaire. Furthermore, to collect the data deeper, this research applied in-depth interviews. The finding showed that the students indicated positive attitudes even if they enrolled strict class. It occurred because the English teacher could act as fair-minded regulator and tutor inside the class. Therefore, even if applying strict English class was assumed as traditional method in teaching, apparently it could offer positive aspects toward the students. Basically, in this context, the teacher in order to conduct English language teaching always prioritized student-centered learning. However, even if English language teaching by using disciplined method still demonstrated positive trend, but this research believed that the strongest aspect influencing this finding because of the students’ education background. Thus, this research affirmed that conducting disciplined teaching method in English language teaching (ELT), it could offer drawback or advantage, it depends two factors: How the teacher delivered the material, and the students’ background.
