Abstract

This study explored EFL learners' engagement in English speaking activities employing mobile instant voice messaging applications such as WhatsApp at a secondary education level. Designed as a practice-based qualitative research, the study was conducted among 32 EFL learners working in a direct conversation of speaking practice in a WhatsApp group. The participants’ voice messages were observed as four of them were involved in follow-up interviews which were then qualitatively analyzed. The findings show that speaking activities facilitated with mobile instant voice messaging reveal that students typically can engage in practically easy speaking activities, give more time and space to practice, and helps them to speak confidently. The platform has also facilitated students through an accessible technological tool with useful features for various online speaking class activities and provided chance to reach the application with different needs and backgrounds. In this sense, those facts related to the students’ engagement in speaking class imply a recommendation for EFL speaking classrooms that respond to the current condition and trend.

Abstract

TOEFL was seen as a prerequisite for non-native English students to study abroad, to get a suitable employment, and to get a university diploma. Students also found it challenging to complete the TOEFL reading exam. This was an experimental research based on applying a non-sequential strategy. This study aimed at investigating whether the use of non-sequential strategy was effective to complete the reading comprehension session in TOEFL ITP or not. 100 English university students engaged entirely in the study as participants. They were studying at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Sunan Giri (UNUGIRI) located in Bojonegoro, Eastern Java, Indonesia. The researcher provided the students a pre-test and post-test in order to collect the data. The students were permitted to perform the exam on their own during the pre-test. In this pre-test the researcher provided no special instructions. In the post-test, the participants got a preferential treatment. The students were advised to follow a non-sequential strategy for the exam. The data were produced through the students’ compilation of TOEFL scores. The data were anlyzed by comparing the students’ scores in pre-test and post-test. The results showed that a non-sequential strategy to complete the reading comprehension session of the TOEFL test is very effective to be implemented. This result is addressed further in this article.

Abstract

This research elaborates how ideology operates in a state that applies totalitarian system according to a novel entitled 1984 by George Orwell. This research employs Althusser’s theory which identifies how an ideology places human beings as autonomous subjects in a connecting structure with relations inside it. At the beginning, human beings have been prepared to function in the structure. Moreover, Althusser has some concepts related to the state power, namely Ideological State Apparatus (ISA), Repressive State Apparatus (RSA) and resistance. The function of the state power lies on the state existence and its apparatuses. ISA and RSA are applied as a mechanism to establish the people subservience as a source of power production. The result of this study demonstrates that there is always response from the people in a totalitarian state which applies a tight control over the people by its ideological and repressive apparatuses. As a result, this response becomes an alternative ideology; in this study is socialism, which develops as a resistance towards totalitarianism. The socialists are the proletarians who insist on the equality in the law and economy. However, the state does not allow the movement of the socialist because it is considered as a threat to the state power. Consequently, the state quickly annihilates the socialists and their ideology.

Abstract

This study investigated the types of teacher talks in classroom interactions; those are direct and indirect influences as proposed by Flanders (1970). Besides, the analysis of the teachers’ difficulties during their talks was found out since the subjects in this study were teacher candidates. They had been taught about teacher talk during their micro teaching and teaching practicum classes. Therefore, the proposed research questions were: 1) What are the direct and indirect influences of teacher talks for young learners that appeared in EFL class? 2) What are teacher’s difficulties during teacher talks? To answer the research questions, qualitative research was employed in this study by using observation sheet and questionnaire. The participants were five pre-service teachers from English Education Department of a private university in Jakarta. The teachers had joined teaching practicum in school so that they had had experiences in teaching primary school students. Based on the result, indirect influence of teacher talk were more frequently used (59%). Teachers indirectly influences the students by asking questions. Meanwhile, the direct influence gained 41% of the whole teacher talks with giving direction as the highest frequency (30%). Furthermore, vocabulary and grammar became the main factors of difficulty in teacher talk. Teachers sometimes got confused on how to deliver the certain expressions or give instructions, which made them less confident, especially when they felt nervous. This study was hopefully beneficial for the English department and universities to provide better learning process, other teachers’ candidates that still improve their speaking skills to be more aware of their talks during teaching, and future researchers to broaden the field of study.
