Abstract

Considering the importance of attitudes, this study was conducted to identify the attitudes of Chinese Literature Students toward learning English, which is divided into three specific aspects namely: cognitive, affective, and conative. 91 Chinese Literature Students at a University in Indonesia were chosen as the research participants. Using survey design to achieve the objectives of the study, 91 questionnaire sheets were administered to the participants. It was found that the participants have positive attitudes based on three aspects: mean score of 3.73 (74.59%) for cognitive, 3.40 (68%) for affective, and 3.61 (72%) for conative aspects. In terms of attitudes level, 16 (18%) students were low, 56 (62%) were high, and 19 (21%) students were very high. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that Chinese Literature students have positive attitudes towards EFL learning with mean score of 3.58 (72%). Some suggestions are provided regarding the finding and discussion of this research for Chinese Literature students, English teachers/lecturers, curriculum developers, and for future researchers.

Abstract

This[D1] paper aims to provide readers with a useful introduction to Activity Theory, focusing on the implementation of the theory towards analysis of teacher identity construction in relation to entrepreneurship. The research was conducted[D2] to analyze the phenomenon about teachers who also work as entrepreneur focusing on their identity construction or transformation.  The research[D3] itself is a qualitative research using narrative inquiry as data gathering technique.Based on the 2 respondents analyzed[D4] , it can be concluded that the respondents has already had a strong identity as a teacher formed by their environment, community, tools, rules, and objectives before they decided to start being entrepreneur. The entrepreneurship itself is formed as one shape of the respondents’ agency in teaching. Hence, one of the implications of the research is that in order to form teachers who have strong agency, a teacher training institution must start to form the identity of its students as early as possible. keywords: activity theory, narrative inquiry, teacher identity, entrepreneur, agency

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the adjustment problems experienced by a group of Turkish dual diploma students studying in the USA. The participants of the study were 18 undergraduate Turkish students studying in the Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering dual diploma programs offered by a state university in New York and a state university in Turkey. The data were collected by using 15 interview questions and were analyzed by using constant comparative method in which emerging categories were identified in the interview transcripts and themes were developed from those categories. Analysis of the data indicated six major categories of the factors affecting the adjustment problems: differences in educational systems of the two institutions; English proficiency; the unique design of the program; cultural differences between the two countries; tendency to form and stay in cliques of dual diploma students; and orientation.

Abstract

The present study investigates what aspects of their work are valuable to Turkish EFL teachers working at a state university, and what sorts of rewards they get from their job. The present study also explores how satisfied Turkish EFL teachers working at a state university are with their careers and jobs, and whether gender, age and years of teaching experience play a role in their satisfaction with their careers and jobs. Lastly, the present study analyzes whether teachers’ values or teaching rewards or the interaction between values and rewards predict career and job satisfaction among Turkish EFL teachers working at a state university better. For the accomplishment of the present study, the data were collected by means of the adapted version of a scale instrument on EFL teachers’ values, teaching rewards and career/job satisfaction, created by Kassabgy, Boraie and Schmidt (2001), from a total of 66 English instructors working at Anadolu University School of Foreign Languages (AUSFL). The data were analyzed using a number of statistical procedures, and the findings were interpreted and discussed in accordance with the previous research

Abstract

Nomophobie students have a major concern for current academic issues. Most mobile phone addiction is correlated with negative impacts. Hence, it is needed another descriptive result to know the whole impacts of nomophobie.The aim of this research is to know the critical discourse anlaysis for macro structure, superstructure, micro structure of the news articles by nomophobie students. This is a descriptive qualitative research of case studies which requires an exploratory method to examine, analyze and uncover certain cases.  This research was conducted at a private university in Yogyakarta during January - September 2018. The ability of smartphone users' discourse analysis to circulate news about New Yogyakarta International Airport in two articles has been known in several elements. The findings show that theme elements has been 100% known by the nomophobie students. The second is the rethoric elements which is 91.6%. The third is stylistics which is known for 41.6%. The fourth is syntax which is 16.6%. Scheme and Semantics have not been known at all (9%) by the nomophobie students. Thus, it was proven that all nomophobie students always bring negative impacts towards a certain issue.

Abstract

Advertisement is one of communication tools used to promote products, influence people to do something, and plant certain ideologies. In achieving these goals, the use of figurative language is deeply needed due to its effectiveness in creating enchanting campaigns. In this paper, a semantic study is done to analyze the figurative languages and its contextual meanings in four Thailand advertisements, with the hope that it can give an explanation of how messages delievered through the advertisements. As for the advertisements that the writers use are Smooth E. Baby Face Foam, Smooth E. Face Scrub Advertisement Series, Peppermint Field Inhaler, as well as Nature Gift 21, and Coffee Plus Advertisement that have interesting plots and many figurative languages. The result of this study shows that hyperbole and simile are the most figurative languages found in those advertisements, which is used to insert some humors and attract audiences’ attention to buy the products.

Abstract

An effective teaching method for cultivating students' critical thinking skills of junior high school students in Indonesia is very necessary as their critical thinking ability is still low. This research is a descriptive study which aimed at cultivating learners' critical thinking by using short-videos since it is believed that technology can motivate the students, increase their interest, engage them to the lesson matter, provide effective learning activities, and demand them to think critically and creatively. The subject in this study were 130 Junior High School students (SMP Negeri 1 Sedayu, Yogyakarta) grade IX. The students were homogeny in term of age, economic, and social background as well as in English language score. Facione's critical thinking rubrics were used to indicate the level of students' critical thinking such as their interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation skill of short video. The average score of all item in pre-test critical thinking skills was at fair level with the score 9 out of 20. The results indicate the students' interpretation skills were fair with the score of 9 out of 20; analytical skill was 12; evaluation skill was 9 out of 20; self-regulation was in fair criterion with the score of 5 out of 10 and good level of explanatory's skill with the score 6 out of 10, while 12 for inferences. It can be concluded that the critical thinking skill of the students of Junior High School was still unsatisfactory as most of them can only reach fair levels. The use of video cannot improve all critical thinking skills. It is recommended more practices for the students.

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the interpersonal meaning in students’ explanation texts. Six texts taken from students’ writings were used as the instruments of text analysis. The theories of Systemic Functional Linguistics and explanation text were used as the framework of the text analysis. The findings show that students have employed mood types which are formed by the Subject and Finite as Mood element and predicator and complement as Residue. The arrangement of Subject and Finite in the clauses demonstrates that declarative mood is used dominantly in the texts to realize the speech function of a statement. It suggests that the students have attempted to provide the information to the readers which are relevant to the social function of the explanation text. Moreover, the little use of modality in students’ texts indicates that the students present factual information. This evidence has shown the students’ efforts to position themselves in the texts and to build relationships with the readers. In conclusion, students have been able to create an effective explanation text which is intended to inform how something is done.

Abstract

In this 21st century education, preparing learners to have high order thinking skills (HOTS) is important to make them ready face the global era. HOTS (analyze, evaluate, create) is the continuous phases of LOTS (remember, understand, apply).  HOTS in a project based instruction is proposed to be able to promote the skills needed in the 4.0 era (critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration). This research focused on a HOTS-based project in a mechanical engineering, Adisutjipto College of Technology. Based on the observation in the previous semester, the students needed to improve their HOTS that the research applied an action research study. The projects were allocated in two course objectives; identifying the tools in mechanical engineering and identifying the components of an airplane. They were chosen due to the supported authentic materials exist in the college workshop laboratory, hangar, and airplane museum near the college. The results were the learners enjoyed the learning and improved the engagement in a group work, the critical thinking in finding fruitful information, the creativity in creating presentation, and the speaking skill in presenting in front of other people.
