Abstract

This study examines Eastern feminism and resistance in Middle Eastern women's writings from a postcolonial framework. The purpose of this study explored how the women writers subverted the patriarchal concept and constructed their selves in literary narratives. This study adopted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) technique to synthesis literature from academic databases, such as Google Scholar, JSTOR, and ProQuest based on several strict criteria for inclusion. The findings of the study demonstrate that writers, including Nawal El Saadawi, Hanan Al-Shaykh and Fatema Mernissi sketch powerful female figures who contest patriarchal standards and question the tension of tradition and modernity. Complex storytelling methods, including magical realism, metafiction and social symbolism, were employed to strengthen feminist arguments and social critique. They are also a platform for women’s collective consciousness in response to gender injustice. Yet obstacles remain, including those posed by the difficulty of publication and the hegemony of Western feminist discourse. This study's finish line reveals that Middle Eastern women's literature is not only a creative reflection of life but is also an agent of change which aims to reshape and recreate women's identity and struggle for gender equality on a universal scale.

Abstract

This research analyzes the semantic meaning of Salem batik motifs, an intangible cultural heritage from Brebes Regency, Central Java. Salem batik features distinctive motifs adapted to the local environment and socio-cultural conditions, categorized into color (contemporary) and classic motifs. The primary focus of this study is to examine the lexical meaning, classification of motifs based on their references, and the cultural meaning embedded in these batik motifs. The descriptive qualitative method was employed. The research was conducted in Bentar Village, Salem District, Brebes Regency, at two Salem batik production houses, namely Just 2, which is managed by Mrs. Aan Darwanti, and Mawar Batik, which Mrs. Pupung Kurnaesih manages. Data analysis followed the agih method, involving data reduction, presentation, analysis, and conclusion drawing. The findings identify thirty lexicons of Salem batik motifs classified into three categories. Based on their lexical meaning, the motifs are divided into fourteen color motifs (kangkung, merica, gunung lio, beras tabur, bunga kapas, daun anggur, daun pepaya, kembang kopo, rambutan, wayang, simbar, melati, titik separoh, bawang bebek) and sixteen classic motifs (kopi pecah, manggar, gribig dinding, gribig miring, jaring, sidamukti ukel, ukel pisang, sawat rante, ukel kail, uneg, galaran, puger, parang, sengkawung, galaran kawung, galaran bawang bebek). Based on their references, the motifs are classified into seven categories: flora (kangkung, merica, beras tabur, bunga kapas, daun pepaya, daun anggur, kembang kopo, rambutan, kopi pecah, manggar, puger, simbar, melati), floral stylization (ukel pisang, ukel kail, uneg), geometric (titik separoh, gribig dinding, gribig miring, jaring, sidamukti ukel, galaran, parang, sengkawung, galaran kawung), figurative (wayang), natural/geographical (gunung lio), artefactual (sawat rante), and combinative (bawang bebek, galaran bawang bebek). The overall cultural meaning of these Salem batik motifs reflects the worldview, values, and identity of the Salem community.

Abstract

Abstract

Students' speaking ability in Indonesian language learning is an important aspect that needs to be optimized. However, conventional learning approaches that are less relevant to students' lives often hinder the development of these skills. This study aims to analyze teachers' strategies, especially in the Muadalah Ulya Education Unit, in integrating the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) method to improve students' speaking skills, identify challenges and solutions to the implementation of CTL, and evaluate the transformation of students' speaking skills after the implementation of this method. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design, where data was collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The results showed that the implementation of CTL encouraged students to be more active in speaking through learning activities relevant to daily life. Challenges faced include time constraints, technology support, and differences in students' level of understanding, but these can be overcome through the preparation of flexible lesson plans and collaboration between teachers and students. Visible transformations include increased student courage in expressing opinions, more structured language use, and better understanding of the context of the conversation. This study found that the application of CTL method in Indonesian language learning is effective in optimizing students' speaking skills, while providing meaningful and contextual learning experiences. This research emphasizes the development of learning strategies that are relevant to the needs of students in the modern era.
