Abstract

Gossypium sp. leaf is one of the plants that contain flavonoids that can act as antioxidants. This study aims to look at the effect of combination of the stearic acid and triethanolamine which function as emulsifier in creams and determine antioxidant activity of cream Gossypium sp. leaf extract. Cream is formulated with a variety of stearic acid and triethanolamine emulsifier that F1 (8%: 2%), F2 (12%: 3%), F3 (16%: 4%). Tests carried out at the first day and the 28th days. Evaluation preparations include organoleptic test, homogeneity, viscosity, pH, and type of the cream. The results showed that the variation of concentration emulsifier that fill quality preparations with some parameters such as organoleptic, homogeneity, the type of cream and viscosity. pH of cream does not qualify are 4.5-6, but still in the neutral pH range (pH ± 7). Antioxidant activity of the cream has a large reduce power at the first day DPPH reduce percent value for F1, F2, and F3 are 80,73%, 83,05% and 83,51% respectively, while after the storage at the 28th days DPPH reduce percent value for F1, F2, and F3 are 80,43%, 82,49% and 79,02% respectively. Preparation creams that fill physical quality cream is F1 by using emulsifier triethanolamine and stearic acid with a concentration of 8%: 2%

Abstract

Pharmacological therapy of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is to use antidiabetic oral. Herbal medicine are also often used as an alternative treatment by patients. Even in some cases found patients combine drugs and herbal medicine to speed up the healing of DM. This study aims to know the effects of a combination of glibenclamide and bay leaf ethanol extract (BLEE) to decrease blood glucose levels and to determine its optimal combination dose as antidiabetic. The method was inducted alloxan at dose of 120 mg/kg BW intraperitoneally. The animal test used were mice which divided into 8 groups of tests, the negative control (Na CMC 0,5 %), positive control (glibenclamide 0,65 mg/kg BW), combination 1(glibenclamide+BLEE 250 mg/kg BW), combination 2 (glibenclamide+BLEE 500 mg/kg BW), combination 3 (glibenclamide+BLEE 750 mg/kg BW), BLEE 1 (250 mg/kg BW), BLEE 2 (500 mg/kg BW), and BLEE 3 (750 mg/kg BW). After 14 days study, data were analyzed by ANOVA showed the difference in decrease of blood glucose levels combination 2 (230±23,69) mg/dL and combination 3 (233,75±9,93) mg/dL were significantly different to the negative control (4±6,82) mg/dL, positive control (150,75±11,34) mg/dL, combination 1 (170±10,51) mg/dL, BLEE 1 (134,5±4,61) mg/dL, BLEE 2 (151,25±6,72) mg/dL, and BLEE 3 (158,75±17,64) mg/dL. While combination 2 and combination 3 were not significantly different. Combination of glibenclamide and bay leaf ethanol extract decreased blood glucose levels greater than a single dosage glibenclamide or bay leaf extract. Optimal doses decreased blood glucose levels was combination 2.

Abstract

Star fruits (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) from family of oxalidaceae is a plant which has potential as an antibacterial Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Flavonoid are the active compounds from the extract of star fruit which has potential as an antibacterial. Star fruit were extracting by ethanol 96 % using maceration. Extract were identified using thin layer chromatography (TLC) with eluent analytic n-butanol- glacial acetic acid- water (6:1:3). Preparative isolation using thin layer chromatography resulting three bands. Each band was centrifuged to obtain isolates. Physics isolates were analyzing using spectrophotometer UV Vis and chemically using color test (shift reagent). UV Vis spectrum results with shift reagent from isolates 1, suspected as isoflavone compound with OH groups in position 6,7,4 and OH groups in O- ring A, in isolates 2 was not flavonoid compound and predicted as other polyphenolic compound and in isolates 3 suspected of flavone compound with OH groups in position 5,6,7 and OH groups in O-ring A

Abstract

One of the chronic complications of diabetes mellitus is a disorder of macrovascular as hypertension so that in it’s medicinal treatment required therapy with multiple drugs all at once that can lead to drug interactions. Drug interactions can result in increased toxicity and decrease the effectiveness of drugs that interact. This study aims to determine the prescription profile of DM patients with hypertension include the number of drugs prescribed, dosage forms, classes and types of drugs and the incidence of drug interactions theoretically, based on the mechanism drug interactions in outpatient installations of RSUD Undata Palu 2014. This design research is a non-experimental study with descriptive. Retrieval of patient data performed prospectively during the period from March to June 2014. Subjects who fill the inclusion criteria is adult patients that attain age of 18-60 years and diagnosed diabetes mellitus with hypertension are interview to obtain primary data while the secondary data such as medical records and prescriptions. Retrieved 61 sample. Based on dosage forms prescribe profile that most often given to the DM patients with hypertension was tablets (94.5%). Class of diabetes drugs most widely used is a sulfonylurea (21.1%) and hypertension drug classes beta blocker (12.2%). Types of diabetic drugs most widely used was glimepiride (14.2%) and hypertension was bisoprolol (9.2%). The percentage result of drug interactions theoretically was 85.2% (52 patients), drug interactions type that the most occured was pharmacodynamic interactions 72.7%. Diabetes melitus Patients with hypertension in outpatient installations of RSUD Undata Palu 2014 were most potentially subjected to drug interactions

Abstract

Pain is a mechanism of body defense. One way to allay or decreasing the pain is using medicines that have analgetic effect. The aim of this study is determine the analgetic effect of cactus fruits (Opuntia elatior Mill.) extract and the most effective dose to giving analgetic effect. This study used writhing method by the injection acetic acid 1% as induced. Group I as a negative control used natrium carboxy methylcellulose 1%, group II as a positive control used aspirin suspension which dosage was 1,3 mg/20g BB, group III as a extract of cactus fruits give to dose 50 mg/kg BB, group IV dose 100 mg/kg BB, and group V dose 150 mg/kg BB. The result shows that cactus fruits extract to giving analgetic effect judging from the reduction strength writhing reflex to protection percentage at dose 50 mg/kg BB (11,26%), 100 mg/kg BB (42,10%), 150 mg/kg BB(60,14%) and the positif control (75,34%), at the positif control shows that higher protection percentage. Effectiveness percentage analgetic extract of cactus fruits at dose of 50 mg/kg BB (14,4%), 100 mg/kg BB (55,36%), 150 mg/kg BB (79,95%) and positif control (100%). The data which is got from the calculation later is analyzed by Kruskal Wallis. The result showed that at dose of 150 mg/kg BB is p: 0,016 (p<0,05) when compared with the positive control. So that is different significantly between dose 150 mg/kg BB and the positive control. The extract showed a optimal analgetic effect characterized by a significant reduction in the number of writhes or abdominal stretches in mice with dose 150 mg/kg BB body weight used when compared to the cactus fruits extract dose 50 and 100 mg/kg BB

Abstract

Basil (Ocimum americanum L.) is a plant that has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis that is a bacteria can cause infection. Basil contains essential oils that act as an antibacterial. This research aims to formulate the essential oil of basil leaves into a liquid soap, determine antibacterial activity against S.aureus and S.epidermidis bacteria with the agar diffusion method using wells and determine the stability of the preparation. Antibacterial activity data that gain was analyzed by one-way ANOVA with a level of trust 95% followed by Duncan test. The results of the research showed basil essential oil liquid soap preparation has antibacterial activity. The analysis results showed that there were significant differences in the concentration of 2%, 3%, 4%, and the Duncan test results showed no significant difference between the concentration of 4% with control (+). The results of the t-student analysis of liquid soap include viscosity, pH and dispersive capacity does not fill the parameters of stability during the storage period of 28 days

Abstract

Betel nut (Areca catechu L.) is a natural material that has antibacterial activity content against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. Under these conditions, betel nuts were formulated in a toothpaste that has antibacterial activity.This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of betel nut extract in toothpaste with various concentrations of 1.5%, 3% and 4.5% and to determine the effective concentration of betel nut extract in toothpaste that meets the physical quality of chemical and antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. The research design used was a completely randomized design (CRD). Extraction was done by maceration using ethanol 96%. Viscous extract obtained in the preparation of toothpaste formulated with a concentrations of 1.5%, 3% and 4.5%. All tested formula toothpaste physical quality of chemical (organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity and foaming) and antibacterial activity. The data obtained in the physical quality of chemical testing were analyzed descriptively and antibacterial activity data were statistically analyzed using One Way ANOVA at 95% confidence level, followed by Duncan test using SPSS. The test results show that the antibacterial toothpaste with betel nut extract concentrations of 1.5%, 3% and 4.5% show antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. Formula toothpaste as an antibacterial effective against bacteria test is F3 with betel nut extract concentration of 4.5%, which result in the diameter of the inhibition of Streptococcus mutans by 11.37 mm and 20.03 mm for Staphylococcus aureus. The test results show all the physical quality of chemical toothpaste betel nut extracts meet the physical quality of chemical toothpaste

Abstract

Acne is the abnormality production of sebum in the sebaceous glands which are usually caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis. Staphylococcus epidermidis one of bacterial that caused acne. Quercetin have a phenolic compound that can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis at 0.05% w/w. The purpose of this study was to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of quercetin gel. HPMC was used as gel base. The concentrations of quercetin that was added to gel were 0.05% w/w, 0.15% w/w, and 0.25% w/w. The antibacterial activity of the gels was determined using agar diffusion method. The results showed that the inhibition zone on the F1, F2, and F3 were 7.83 mm , 6.53 mm , 4.56 mm and the result showed that quercetin gels significantly effected the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis (p<0,05). The minimum inhibitory concentration of quercetin gel was 0,05% w/w with inhibition zone of 7.83 mm.
