Abstract

Background: The role of zinc as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory has been widely proven, this substance is relatively inexpensive and easily available to the public. Serum zinc levels of leprosy patients and patients with leprosy reactions are lower compared to healthy people, and proinflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 play a role in the mechanism of leprosy reactions. Research on the effect of zinc supplementation on leprosy sufferers who have not experienced a reaction has not been done. Objective: To analyze the effect of 40 mg / day dose of zinc sulphate supplementation for 12 weeks on the levels of proinflammatory cytokines levels TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 in type MB leprosy patients. Method: This is an experimental study using a randomized control group pretest and posttest design. The study participants were MB patients with 121 patients who did not experience a leprosy reaction, the sample was taken randomly as many as 31 patients as a supplementation group (treatment), and 31 patients as Control group. BMI measurements, food intake by re-call method, Hb level using Hematology Analyzer, serum zinc levels using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-1β levels used the ELISA method. Data were analysed using chi-square and t-tests. Results: Zinc sulfate supplementation dose of 40 mg / day for 12 weeks in type MB leprosy patients was able to maintain a decrease in zinc levels of 1.22 pg / dL higher than leprosy patients who did not receive zinc supplementation, reduce levels of IL-1β (p=0.032). However, statistically there is insufficient evidence to reduce levels of TNF-α (p=0.063) and IL-6 (p=0.389) and risk factors. Conclusion: The study confirmed that 40 mg / day supplementation of zinc sulfate for 12 weeks in type MB leprosy patients able to maintain a decrease in serum zinc levels, reduce IL-1β levels. Abstract

Background: Parenteral nutrition plays an important role in the infants post intestinal surgery. Currently, n-6 soybean oil-based intravenous lipid emulsion (IVLE) is used as a standard. n-6 have been shown increases biomarkers of inflammation while n-3 have shown positively influence clinical outcomes due to their immunomodulatory action. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of n-3 fish oil-enriched IVLE on mortality and length of stay in infants post intestinal surgery. Methods: A medical record retrospective study was undertaken in infants post intestinal surgery at Dr. Soetomo Hospital in 2016-2017. Infants with intestinal atresia who had PN for at least three days were included. The n-6 soybean oil-based and n-3 fish oil-enriched IVLE were used. Incomplete data was excluded. Results: There were 19 infants (12/19 boys) included in this study. 10/19 infants received the n-6 soybean oil-based IVLE. The duration and dose of IVLE used were 16.52±11.34 days and 1.80±0.44 g/kg/day. Mortality rate was significantly lower in n-3 fish oil-enriched IVLE group (P=0.02) while there was no difference on length of stay (P=0.484).Conclusion: Infants who received the n-3 fish oil-enriched IVLE have a lower mortality rate but there is no difference on length of stay. Abstract

This study determined the relationship between the physical health condition of the pot makers and their household gross monthly income. It used the correlational descriptive method and was conducted in 2018. There were 17 identified as respondents of the study. The tool used was a researcher made questionnaire and underwent validation process. The study was granted the notice to proceed by the university and were approved by the local executive heads. The researchers personally distributed the questionnaires to assist the respondents and further explained in vernacular the purpose of the study to their level of understanding. The questionnaire was translated into Filipino language. The percentage was used to determine the age, physical health condition and household gross monthly income. The spearman rank was used to determine the relationship between the physical health condition and the income. This paper arrived at the conclusions that there is a less participation in the pot making among the young generation. Likewise, most of the respondents were suffering mild illness and had a very low income. It is recommended that the state university in the locality needs to conduct trainings and provide technical assistance, establish programs to support the health condition of the people in the pot making, collaborate with government and non-government organizations addressing poverty alleviation. Further, household monthly gross income can be augmented by providing technology to provide fast production of better products and lessen the physical task. Abstract

Workplace, being a dynamic and changing environment is considered to be one of the major sources of daily stress among employees. Various researchers identified ways of coping to address the demand of occupational stress. Eastern Visayas State University – Tanauan Campus as an academic institution is expected to provide timely and responsive services to its stakeholders. The study sought to evaluate the relationship of coping strategies to level of occupational stress among employees of EVSUTC that will provide basis for possible implementation of health and wellness program or policy intervention in stress management program. The study was anchored on the Job Demand Control Model which provides explanation on the occupational stress level among employees. The study utilized a standardized instrument and questionnaires were distributed to 146 respondents to extract the different variables and its relationship. Descriptive-correlational design was also utilized and appropriate statistical treatment observed to obtain association. The study revealed employing selfefficacy (one’s own motivation) as the primary coping strategies identified to be effective in addressing stress. The findings also revealed, that new employees have higher stress level, while those with longer number of work or occupational experience display lesser amount of stress. The researchers recommend that university administrators should focus on faculty welfare by providing a health and wellness program to address occupational related – stress. Policy related to health promotion and prevention should also be considered. Senior employees are also encouraged to conduct mentoring and capacity training among junior personnel in order lessen the level of occupational stress.
