Abstract

Objective: Sialolithiasis is a common disease of the salivary glands. Sialolithiasis occurs mainly in the submandibular gland (80–90%) and to a lesser extent in the parotid gland (5–20%). Sialoliths may be single or multiple. Multiple sialolith in the submandibular gland are rare. Seventy to 80% of cases feature solitary stones; only about 5% of patients have three or more stones.  Patients commonly experience pain and/or swelling. Methods: A 51-year-old male came to Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a swelling and pain at the right submandibular. The panoramic radiograph showed a radiopacity mass with well-defined in right submandibular. The Ultrasonographic interpretation showed hypoechoic inhomogeneous mass with multiple calcification. The submandibular gland removal was performed by extraoral approach.Result:Multiple sialolith in the submandibular gland are rare. A surgical approach for removal of sialolith in the submandibular gland could be intraoral or extraoral. In this case report, we described five stones in the submandibular gland. which were removed by extraoral approach. Conclusion: There are various methods available for the management of salivary stones. In this case report, removal of the submandibular gland with the stone should still be preferred as the gold standard of treatment and could avoid recurrence of this medical condition.

Abstract

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has a very important role in the function of mastication, swallowing and talking.During the process of chewing, this joint sustains a large amount of stress. Some complex excessive pressure on thejoints can cause structural damage to the joints or interfere with the normal function of the relationship betweencondyle, discus and eminence that will result in pain and dysfunction. This study aimed to determine the frequencyrepresentation of TMJ dysfunction in 6-13 years-old children. Descriptive study was conducted by survey on studentsof SDN 2 Sengkang-Wajo totaling 297 children, consisting of 157 males and 140 females. The sampling using astratified random sampling, by means of sub-populations forming a relatively homogeneous state of the variables. Results showed that the frequency of TMJ dysfunction with symptoms of pain in the supporting muscles TMJ washigher (87.34%) compared to other symptoms, followed by symptoms of mouth opening limitation (62.02%), clicking(43.03%), deflection (21.51%), mouth opening deviation (16.45%), and crepitation (5.06%). Based on the prevalence, many students of SDN 2 Sengkang suffering from dysfunction TMJ with a variety of symptoms due to low levels ofdental and oral hygiene due to lack UKGS in school.

Abstract

According to 2009 Indonesian Health Profile Data, pulp and periapical diseases were 8thof the 10 outpatients athospital. This situation tends to increase become the big of 7. Pulp and periapical diseases occur due to bacterialinfection in the pulp tissue. The bacteria are often found in the root canal, namely E. faecalis, and Actinomyces spp.Various herbs commonly used by people to treat dental diseases, i.e. root sidaguri. However, sidaguri plants have notbeen studied in the field of dentistry as an antibacterial. This study aimed to determine the effects of root sidaguriagainst E. faecalis and Actinomyces spp. Inhibition test of ethanol extract of the roots sidaguri against E. faecalis andActinomyces spp. using agar diffusion method at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% based on themeasurement of inhibition zone by each concentration. The greatest inhibition against E. faecalis was performed by concentration of 20% (p<0.05), while no inhibition zone was found on Actinomyces spp. It was concluded that theethanol extract of the sidaguri roots was the most effective against E. faecalis at concentration of 20%, but not effectiveat all against Actinomyces spp.

Abstract

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is the generation of platelet concentrates containing growth factors, which play a role in theprocess of healing and tissue regeneration. This study aimed to compare the effects of using of PRF with subepithelialconnective tissue graft (SCTG)as a treatment to gingival recession Miller Class I-II. Nine patients with bilateralgingival recession, as the subjects have two recessions. One side was treated with coronally advanced flap(CAF)+SCTG, while the other side was treated with CAF+PRF. The length of the recession is measured andcalculated as the percentage of root closure before and after surgery (10 and 30 days). The results showed that therewere significant differences in the average length of recessions between PRF and SCTG before and after the action onday 10 and day 30 (p<0.05). Closing percentage of gingival recession 10 days after SCTG treatment was 7 (77.8%)had experienced completely closing; while the PRF, only 6 (66.7%); p>0.05. Whereas on day 30, after SCTGtreatment, all subjects had undergone a recession closing perfectly, while the PRF group only 66,7% recession thathave closing completely (p=0.05). It was concluded that the CAF+SCTG provide maximum results compared withCAF+PRF in treating gingival recession Miller Class I–II.
