Abstract

Periodontal disease has been involved in a variety of systemic disorders and suspected as a potential risk factor for fetal growth restriction. Periodontal pathogenic bacteria may actively regulate embryonic development, implantation and placental trophoblast cell invasion. This study aimed to analyze the role of TNF-α, IL-10 and caspase-3 to maintain fetal growth in Porphyromonasgingivalis-infected pregnant rats. Female rats were infected with live-Porphyromonas gingivalis at concentration of 2x109 cells/ml into subgingival sulcus area of the maxillary first molar before and during pregnancy. They were sacrificed on gestational day (GD)-14 and GD20. The weight and length of placentas and fetuses were evaluated. The expression of TNF-α, IL-10 and caspase-3 in macrophages and trophoblast cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. On GD14, TNF-α (R2=0.416;P=0.000) and IL-10 (R2=0.187;P=0.012) had an important role to increase expression of caspase-3 in the placenta, but only TNF-α (R2=0.393;P=0.000 ) was able to increase the expression of caspase-3 on GD20. TNF-α and caspase-3 also had an important role (P<0.000) to decrease fetal weight, fetal length and placental weight on GD14 and GD20, but it was not the case with IL-10 (P>0.000). The increasing expressions of TNF-α and IL-10 did not only enhance immune protection, but also maintained the trophoblast cells survival by regulating expression of caspase-3. Porphyromonas gingivalis infection in maternal periodontal tissue can lead to decrease in placental weight, fetal weight and fetal length which mediated by increasing expression of TNF-α, IL-10 and caspase-3 in the placenta.

Abstract

Supernumerary teeth is an abnormality in the form of increasing amount of teeth more than the normal amount, thatis more than twenty twenty in the decidui dentition or thirty two in the permanent dentition. The objective of thepresent study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of supernumerary teeth of 13-15 year old childrenin Makassar. This descriptive study involved 13-15 year old children who were present during the oral examinationin 14 junior high schools in Makassar. This cross-sectional study employed random sampling method. This studyfound 24 supernumerary teeth which yield a prevalence of 0.6%. The prevalence among male was higher thanamong female (M:F of 2.1:1). The greatest proportion of supernumerary teeth was found in the maxillary anteriorregion consisting of single supernumerary teeth (90.9%)and multiple supernumerary (9.1%). The prevalence ofcharacteristic sample based on their site of supernumerary teeth is mesiodens (58.3%) and lateral incisor (41.7%).Out of the 24 supernumerary teeth, 93.8% erupted and 4.2% partial erupted. The prevalence of characteristic samplebased on their morphology is conical (83.4%), tubercular (8.3%), and supplementale (8.3%). This study concludedthat the prevalence of supernumerary teeth for children of 13-15 years old in Makassar was found higher among male(ratio M:F of 2.1:1)and they are most frequently located in the maxilla. Most cases presented only single supernumeraryand in multiple cases the mesiodens region is predominant, with the conical shape is the commonest morphology.

Abstract

Periodontitis is a common type of periodontal disease caused by expansion of the early stages of gingivalinflammation. Expansion of inflammation to the tissue structures supporting the teeth can be modified by thepathogenic ability of plaque or host resistance factors. A total of 200 different bacteria have been identified on theplaque. Resistance to antimicrobials can be natural because the microbes develop mechanisms to defendthemselves. Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic drug of the second generation quinolones derivatives. Mechanism of itsaction is to inhibit the activity of bacterial DNA gyrase, which is bactericidal with a broad spectrum against Grampositiveor negative. This observational study identified P. aeruginosa and sensitivity test was performed tociprofloxacin in periodontal abscesses. Study conducted in 23 patients with periodontal abscess. Of those,Pseudomonas was acquired for 8 samples and 4 of them was resistant to ciprofloxacin.

Abstract

Questionnaire of modified dental anxiety scale (MDAS) have been translated into various languages such as Spain,Greece, China, Romania, Turkey and Malaysia. However, no study has tested the reliability and validity of the MDAsin the Indonesian version, so it can be used effectively to assess dental anxiety among Indonesian population. Thisstudy aimed to determine the reliability and validity of the Indonesian version of MDAs. Analytic observational studywith cross sectional study was conducted in a patient population Dental Hospital Hasanuddin University that will beextracted, filled and scalled, with purposive sampling technique. Realibility of dental anxiety level was tested withCronbach's alpha test, the provision is acceptable if the value is >0.6.Using product moment correlation test, validity isaccepted if the value is >0.3. Results showed the questionnaire MDAS in Indonesian version has good internalconsistency with the value of 0.862, and a valid value (0.706). Based on the characteristics of the respondents, only agesignificantly affects anxiety level difference. It was concluded that the MDAS in Indonesian version has good reliability and validity.

Abstract

Cervical margin of fixed denture either jacket crown or bridge, is usually placedsubgingivally for the natural look, however this can sometimes cause gingivalinflammation. Moreover, if the restoration material is acrylic, it sometimes can irritateoral tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of acrylic, used as fixeddenture material, to gingival tissue reaction. This was an experimental study, using preand post test of 5 acrylic jacket crowns, made to patients in the ProsthodonticDepartment, Dental Hospital of Hasanuddin University. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF)was collected before preparation, and three weeks after insertion of the jacket crowns, then pro-inflammatory cytokines; TNF-α and IL-1β were examined. The results analyzedby Wilcoxon sign rank test (p<0.05). The results showed the elevation of TNF-α and IL1βconcentration after acrylic jacket crown insertion compare with the concentrationbefore preparation. The conclusion of this study is acrylic restoration material may causegingival inflammation.

Abstract

Osteoporosis is a systemic disease which characterized by a reduction in bone mass with deterioration microarchitecture of bone and degradation of bone tissue which can raise loss of bone. Osteoporosis is a problem related to the aging process. Osteoporosis process actually begin at the age 40-50 years. At this age, men and women will experience shrinkage process of bone mass. in women, this process faster after menopause and is more common in women than men. The technique can be used to detect osteoporosis by performing panoramic radiographic examination techniques. Panoramic radiography is a technique for generating photo of facial structures, including the maxillary bone, mandibular and other support structures. To detect the presence of osteoporosis in elderly women using Panoramic Radiography Techniques. The subjects of this study is image results of a panoramic radiography with vulnerable women aged 50-70> obtained from the Hospital Radiology section of Unhas, Mental Index measurement is then performed on image results of the panoramic radiographs. Overall regardless of age , the prevalence of osteoporosis reached 10 % per 100 population . ( P > 0.05). In detecting osteoporosis in elderly women, panoramic radiography can be applied. The index used is Mental Index, an index of panoramic radiography has been developed to detect osteoporosis.
