Abstract

This paper discusses spiritual and fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) aspects of music in relation to two classical Sufi masters i.e, Abū Naṣr al-Sarrāj al-Ṭūsi (378/988) and Alī b. Uthmān al-Jullabi al-Ḥujwīrī (465/1072). It particularly focuses on their two masterpieces i.e., Kitāb al-Luma’ and Kashfu al-Maḥjūb. It further compares three specific points; permissibility of music, listening to Quran and poetry and the state of ecstasy in auditing music. Based on this study, it is found that the Sufi Masters observed the matter of spirituality can be combined and approached with strict obedience through rigidly practicing fiqh. Yet, it should be noted that spirituality of music will be of course beyond dicta of jurisprudence by the fact that spirituality is inward thing while shari’ah (which is narrowly used to point religious law) is outward one. As to the matter of listening to Quran and poetry, both sufi masters offer more emphasis on listening Qur’an than poetry or odes. Nevertheless, they did not negate the importance of listening to poetry, poems and odes. It is evidenced by a ḥadīth stating that indeed there is wisdom in every poetry. In terms of the state of ecstasy, the two masters offer tawājud (artificial wajd). Tawājud is aimed to gain wajd by representing to one’s mind the bounties and evidences of God, and thinking of union (ittiḥād) and wishing for the practices of Muslim saints.

Abstract

Modernism as the product of Renaissance has succeeded in couping the reality of God. The view of several western intellectuals have caused to the obscurity of human concepts which then affects to the meaning of the progress of human civilization, and further, presents serious problems almost in all social life. In the context of the archipelago (Nusantara), some Islamists groups try to establish a civilization based on materialistic point of view and with textual interpretation of the Qur'an. In fact, Islam in the archipelago genealogically has characteristics which are very spiritual so it is not appropriate to develop an advanced civilization in the archipelago based on materialist achievements as promoted by western modernism. The prophetic mission interpreted by Ṭabaṭaba’i in al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qur'an verses 1-2 and 5 gives the concept of spiritual civilization based on the Qur'an which is in line with the character of the archipelago. Thus, this study seeks to answer these research questions: first, how is the prophetic mission interpreted by Ṭabaṭaba’i in his Tafsīr al-Mīzān constructing spiritual civilization? Second, how is the construction of spiritual civilization in harmony and able to actualize the treasury of the archipelago? The method used in this study is a descriptive analysis with the approach of Ṭabaṭaba’i’s interpretation (Tafsīr) on the prophetic mission. The study finds that Ṭabaṭaba’i interpretation on the Surah al-Jumu’ah verses 1-2 and 5 gives the spiritual construction of civilization that is in line with the character of the archipelago

Abstract

Pluralism is judged by some thinkers as a response to their dissatisfaction with monism. The factual realities have made a self-evident that society's culture is plural. In this paper the author tries to describe three prominent figures who discuss about pluralism and the weaknesses of their thoughts. The author stands on the work of Bhikhu Parekh entitled "Rethinking Multiculturalism; Cultural Diversity and Political Theory". In Parekh's view, the three thinkers have criticized monism and wanted to propose the idea of cultural pluralism. Unfortunately, they are stuck on moral values which are integral and universal. So they are just returning to moral monism in explaining the reality of a diverse society. In this dialect, multiculturalism becomes a new alternative for intercultural dialogue that carries the mission of equality and freedom of expression which is accompanied by positive reciprocity leading to a dynamic civilization of constructive human life.

Abstract

The spirit (al-Âtman) is a Hindu metaphysical subject. It is spritual existence, intangible by the senses, and abstracted from material physical matters. It is not subject to natural laws, which go beyond the limits of nature. It is the life force of living beings, and a spiritual substance that is not perceived by ordinary means. It is the source of life and movement in all assets.  Âtman is immortal and inexhaustible.

Abstract

One of the issues that haunts contemporary Muslim scholarship is the objectivity of the study of Islamic Studies which they strive for. Among them are groups called insiders and outsiders. Insiders as Islamic reviewers come from Muslims, while outsiders are reviewers of non-Muslims who are often called orientalists. If insiders are considered to be less objective because of their ideological interests as the adherents of Islam, the outsider's unobjectivity is due to their propaganda-oriented study. The problem eventually leads to the solutioncoming upfrom some prominent scholars’ ideas in Islamic Studies, among them are Kim Knot, Abdur Rouf, and Fazlur Rahman. Kim Knot produced a Spatial theory, Abdur Rauf initiated an Empatic Understanding, while Fazlur Rahman formulated objectivity theories. Those three try to make efforts to bridge between insider and outsider so that each can do an objective study, which is not ideologically-subjective biased. This is called intersubjectivity in religious studies.

Abstract

Many theories have been proposed to discuss Sufism in terms of its linguistic origins and its role in spiritual knowledge, its concepts and ideas, and cultural influences. Both Muslim and orientalist scholars have offered opposing views on the beginnings of Sufism. Unfortunately, Western orientalists were the first to research this topic, and their ideas greatly influenced later scholars. This study examines how early British orientalists, particularly Sir William Jones, approached the study of Sufism. Jones represents the early development of British orientalism, which started in the form of personal travel accounts long before orientalist societies were established to support them. Only the later ‘experts on the Orient’ created scholarly circles that followed a more objective and systematic approach to studying Muslim cultures, yet often persisted in the erroneous claim that Sufism was an external and foreign element in Islamic culture.

Abstract

This paper wants to prove how Said Nursi's efforts to persuade humans to become meaningful (ma’nawi) humans through his interpretation of Risālah al-Nūr. This tafsir, which is more Kalam and Isyāri (Sufi) in style, was Nursi's answer to his anxiety in facing the challenges of modernity in Turkey at that time (and is still relevant today). In the context of human nature, Nursi is aware that modernity has made humans fall into an attitude which he calls tafrid and ifrat in using his every senses (outer and inner senses). Therefore, with the characteristics and originality of his interpretation, he describes how people can return to their nature, namely by behaving 'adl or tawasut in all things. This is the man that he later calls as a meaningful human being. The methods that the author used in this research are descriptive-analysis methods and library research, by making tafsir Risālah al-Nūr and tafsir Isyārāt al-I’jāz as primary sources, then supported by other secondary books which are still related to the theme.

Abstract

The process of Islamization of Java is totally obscure. Because of the dark history of their conversion into Islam, and of misleading information from some orientalists, some members of Muslim communities mistaken some rituals as animistic and un-Islamic. On the other extreme, ironically, theyconfuse creed that is in opposition to IslamwiththeIslamic orthodoxy. For the former, slametan is the perfect example, meanwhile, for the latter, sadjen becomes its representative. This paper aims to describe and analyzeKiai Ṣaleh Darat’s response to both slametan and sadjen, some abangan customs (adat)– as Geertz would like to call – written down in Ṣaleh’s works. Based on this analysis, we also would provide a response to the error Geertz makes about the animistic attribute of slametan. In contrast to his imagination, slametanis perfectly Islamic and based on Islamic practice of communities from which Javanese Islam originate. In addition, Kiai Shaleh accepts the ritual and gives it Islamic justification. Meanwhile, sadjen – as Kiai Shaleh points out – is totally an opposition to the most fundamental credo of Islam, namely the Unity of God, “Tauhid.”
