Abstract

Abstract

The Feeder Wira-Wiri Suroboyo is a transportation service specifically designed to enhance connectivity and efficiency within Surabaya's public transportation network, particularly by serving areas that are not accessible by regular buses. Despite being a well-managed public transportation service overseen by the city government, this form of transportation has not successfully encouraged widespread participation from the Surabaya community in its utilization. The purpose of this study was to identify operational problems in the Feeder Wira-Wiri Suroboyo using the participant observation method. Observations were conducted on different days and times to evaluate performance and identify strengths and weaknesses in feeder operations. The participant observation method involved researchers who actively used the service to gain direct experience and accurate data. The findings showed that although the feeder operated effectively, especially during peak hours, and provided adequate basic facilities, there were several areas that needed improvement. The primary problems identified include extended waiting times, the absence of an audio information system or notification system, and inaccuracies in application-based tracking. In order to improve operational effectiveness, recommended improvements are in waiting times, development of an audio notification system, and accuracy of application tracking. This study provides a reference for the Surabaya City Government to further improve the Feeder Wira-Wiri Suroboyo service so that it can be an alternative means of transportation to reduce congestion in the city of Surabaya.

Abstract

The increasing number of students with autism in Indonesia has encouraged the development of therapy and educational service centers, including in Malang. At PKBM Ki Hadjar Dewantara, a non-formal educational institution, a notable rise in students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been recorded. This study focuses on understanding the behavioral characteristics of autistic students within classroom settings. Autism, as a developmental condition, affects social interaction, communication, emotional regulation, sensory processing, play, and repetitive behavior. Using a qualitative approach, the research employed empirical observation, interviews with educators and therapists, and behavior setting techniques through motion space mapping. The findings highlight the importance of autism-friendly learning spaces, organized into four adaptive zones: the play zone (high stimulation), the learning and creativity zone (transitional), the escape or safe zone (low stimulation), and the multisensory zone (Snoezelen). This zoning strategy reflects an inclusive and adaptive design that accommodates diverse sensory and behavioral needs. The study demonstrates how flexible spatial design in non-formal education can foster engagement, comfort, and development for autistic students while supporting sustainable and inclusive learning practices.

Abstract

Complex airport environments pose significant wayfinding challenges for passengers, particularly within large international hubs like Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (SHIAM) in Makassar, Indonesia. This study examines the quality of wayfinding at SHIAM, aiming to identify areas for improvement and inform future design decisions. Employing a quantitative approach, the study combines objective spatial data from a visibility index (VI) analysis of 23 key terminal facilities with subjective wayfindingexperiences gleaned from existing case studies. The VI analysis assessed visual access, layout complexity, and facility importance, revealing an overall VI score: 0,599, indicating moderate wayfinding difficulties. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to address visibility and accessibility issues, particularly in critical facilities. By optimizing wayfinding within the terminal, the airport can enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.

Abstract

Urban housing often limits children’s play opportunities due to restricted space. This study explores how small urban homes can support toddlers’ play and development through affordance theory, using the Form-Affordance-Function (FAF) framework to link spatial form, perceived actions, and developmental outcomes. A qualitative case study of five households with children aged 2-5 years employed observations and caregiver interviews to identify perceptible and hidden affordances. Findings show that toddlers creatively engage with both designed and everyday spatial elements, such as floors, stairs, and furniture, transforming them into play opportunities that foster motor skills, independence, and imagination. Designed spaces provided clear, perceptible affordances, while alternative spaces revealed hidden ones through child-led adaptation. The study highlights children’s agency in constrained environments and offers insights for architects and caregivers to design flexible, developmentally supportive homes.

Abstract

Healthcare facilities play a crucial role in the patient recovery process. The condition of healthcare facilities has a direct impact on the psychological and emotional well-being of patients. Several previous studies have identified a relationship between the care environment and patient quality of life. Most studies employ literature reviews or observational methods to determine this relationship; however, to date, no quantitative measurements have been used to substantiate this relationship. Therefore, based on these issues, the effect of the healing environment on the quality of life of cancer patients, especially pediatric cancer patients, was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Data were collected through observation and questionnaires covering six factors that affect the quality of life of cancer patients at Hospital in Surabaya. PLS-SEM methods was used in the hope of obtaining a model of latent variable relationships with good accuracy. PLS SEM is a development of the SEM method, in which parameter estimation does not require specific distribution assumptions and can be performed on sample sizes.

Abstract

The issues of global warming and rising environmental temperatures require a building design approach that can optimize thermal comfort without relying on active cooling systems. Vernacular architecture offers passive design principles based on local wisdom that are adaptive to the climate. This study aims to analyze the application of passive design strategies in the Memarong Nok and Memarong Mak Traditional Buildings in the Gebong Memarong Traditional Village, Mapur Village, Bangka Regency, as a basis for the development of sustainable vernacular architecture. This study employs a mixed-method approach integrating qualitative and quantitative strategies. Qualitative data were obtained through field observations to understand the spatial characteristics and passive design strategies of the building, while quantitative data were collected through on-site measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation during peak daytime heat conditions. Thermal comfort analysis was conducted using the adaptive thermal comfort model based on ASHRAE Standard 55 and supported by Thermal Humidity Index (THI) calculations to quantitatively assess the building’s environmental performance. The results of the study show that both buildings are able to achieve thermal comfort conditions at outside temperatures of up to 32°C, with Memarong Nok in the comfortable category (THI 24.0°C) and Memarong Mak in the moderately comfortable category (THI 24.8°C). However, at more extreme outside temperatures, the thermal performance of the buildings declines. These findings confirm that passive design elements such as natural ventilation, the use of lightweight natural materials, building orientation, roof shape, and overhangs play a significant role in controlling heat and humidity. This study concludes that passive design principles based on local wisdom are still relevant and have the potential to be adapted as a sustainable building design strategy that is responsive to today's tropical climate.

Abstract

Climate change poses pressing design and environmental challenges, addressable through time-tested vernacular architecture. The Sade settlement on Lombok exemplifies enduring green design practices worth examining for modern applications. This study employs a systematic literature-based methodology: reviewing green architecture benchmarks for an overview; analyzing studies on Sade Village's physical forms; identifying links between general green criteria and local implementations; and formulating principles for future general and vernacular architecture. Using descriptive-evaluative methods, it assesses design elements against eco-friendly standards. Key findings reveal Sade's strengths, including compact, contour-parallel building masses with linear circulation; north-south orientation for optimal passive lighting and ventilation; regulated heights with lightweight, hollow local materials for humid tropical and seismic resilience; ample green open spaces to counter urban heat islands; and nature-responsive site utilities. These principles demonstrate adaptive, ecosystem-sustaining design. The research yields actionable recommendations for integrating such green design principles into future architecture, particularly preserving and enhancing them in Sade and similar vernacular contexts to support long-term environmental sustainability.
