Abstract

Higher education in Bangladesh has its roots in the British colonial period, and since the country's liberation in 1971, the government has placed significant emphasis on developing the education sector. This study aims to identify the structure, acts, laws, and commissions governing higher education in Bangladesh, with a particular focus on the Sylhet division. The study also assesses the performance of private universities within this division. Secondary data were gathered from various articles, websites, and relevant documents, while specific information regarding Leading University was obtained from the office of the Controller of Examinations. Descriptive statistics were employed to analyze the data. The findings indicate that the higher education sector in Bangladesh has undergone significant transformation, particularly following the implementation of the Private University Act of 1992. Among the 158 universities nationwide, only 10 are located in the Sylhet division, and among the 114 medical colleges, only 7 are situated in this region. Within Sylhet's four districts, the Sylhet district houses the majority of higher education institutions, while the Moulvibazar district has the fewest. The private universities in the Sylhet division have shown strong performance in terms of infrastructure, physical facilities, and teacher-student ratios, with Leading University identified as the top performer. However, this study primarily focuses on the opportunities available in higher education in the Sylhet division, and does not assess the quality of education. Future research could explore this aspect further.

Abstract

This study critically examines the evolving nature of higher education in South Africa, focusing on the implementation of student-centred learning approaches. Key elements include the challenges posed by massification, the decolonisation of the curriculum, and the integration of technology. The expanding student population necessitates innovative teaching methods to maintain high educational standards. The shift towards student-centred learning fosters active participation, critical thinking, and differentiated instruction, facilitated by technology, which enables inclusive virtual classrooms. A strategic analysis of 15 scholarly articles underscores the transition to interactive, learner-centred methods aimed at enhancing deep learning and student engagement. The discussion highlights the pivotal role of technology in creating effective learning environments, utilizing tools such as virtual reality and open online courses, while acknowledging challenges like high costs and dropout rates. In the South African context, the adaptation of educational strategies to local conditions, including the use of mobile technology and culturally relevant curricula, is explored. The paper advocates for a dynamic, pragmatic, and learner-focused educational paradigm, crucial for addressing the contemporary challenges in higher education.

Abstract

The international community has recognized batik as a cultural heritage originating from Indonesia through UNESCO. Batik represents a nation's culture with distinctive motifs that carry unique and symbolic meanings. The purpose of this research is to analyze the symbolic meanings of the Ciwaringin batik motifs in the context of the Strengthening the Profile of Pancasila Students (P5) Project in primary schools. The research method employed is qualitative descriptive to gain a profound understanding of the symbolic meanings of Ciwaringin batik in the context of the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project (P5) in primary school students. The research objects consist of five Ciwaringin batik motifs: Pecutan, Yusufan, Tebu Sekeret, Gribigan, and Pring Sedapur. The findings indicate that the patented motifs such as Pecutan, Yusufan, Tebu Sekeret, Gribigan, and Pring Sedapur carry valuable lessons, teaching character education that includes faith and piety in the one and only God, noble morality, global diversity, mutual cooperation, independence, creativity, and critical thinking. These principles of character education can be applied in broader life and society.

Abstract

This study examines the incidence of mental health problems among undergraduates at the University of Ilorin. It also explores the impact of demographic variables such as gender, age, religion, residence type, and academic level on the mental health of students. Utilizing a descriptive survey method, 400 respondents were selected through simple random sampling. Participants completed a self-designed questionnaire titled "Prevalence of Mental Health Problems Questionnaire (PMHPQ)." The instrument's validity and reliability were rigorously tested. Data analysis involved the use of percentages, t-tests, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to evaluate the null hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings indicate a slightly high prevalence of mental health issues among the undergraduates, with symptoms including feelings of hopelessness, fear of abandonment, discomfort in close relationships, unexplained physical pain, and stress-related weight changes. However, the study found no significant differences in mental health problems concerning gender, age, or academic level. These results highlight the critical need for school-based mental health programs to address the psychological well-being of undergraduates in Nigeria.

Abstract

A broad and deep understanding of Islam in the contemporary context has become increasingly important for promoting tolerance and intercultural harmony around the world. One of the emerging approaches in Islamic studies is inter/multidisciplinary scholarship, which allows the integration of various disciplines to explore this aspect of the religion holistically. This paper discusses the contribution of inter/multidisciplinary Islamic scholarship in strengthening tolerance and intercultural harmony. This approach helps individuals understand Islam in a broader framework, reduce religious prejudice, and promote constructive intercultural dialog. Through these studies, we can better embrace religious diversity and work towards a more inclusive and just society. In addition, inter/multidisciplinary Islamic scholarship has the potential to advance the understanding of how Islam contributes to global peace and the resolution of contemporary issues. In an increasingly connected world, understanding the religion with a holistic approach is an important step in creating a more tolerant and harmonious society.

Abstract

After the COVID-19 pandemic for approximately 2 years, a lot of learning that is usually face-to-face is finally done online or in hybrid ways. Certain learning phases, like writing hiragana, katakana, and kanji in a face-to-face classroom, are not transferable to online learning. The goal of this study is to mitigate the learning loss that happens when face-to-face instruction in Japanese language classes is substituted by online learning. The method used is descriptive qualitative by presenting various ways of teaching Moji-Goi using learning media and YouTube. According to John Keller (2021), learning should use the ARCS method (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction) so that learning loss can be overcome with various treatments including the ARCS method and various uses of media such as cards, games, songs, role-play, and YouTube. This research also intends to introduce JF (Japan Foundation) Standard learning and share information about Japanese language teaching, especially about Moji-Goi (Vocabulary-letters)

Abstract

This paper investigates the extent of underperformance, grade repetition and drop-out rates in selected underperforming schools in Amathole West District, Eastern Cape. The findings revealed high failure rates in the selected schools throughout the five years included in the investigation. The findings revealed a high failure rate persisted in the selected schools throughout the five years included in the investigation. Key informants in the study, including teachers and principals, attribute some of the high failure rate to the Promotion and Progression Policy. The chief criticism is that the burden of catching these learners up falls on the teachers while learners exert minimum effort. In addition to the promotion policy and poor resourcing, other in-school and out-of-school factors influence academic performance at the selected schools, such as weak and inconsistent leadership manifested in fluctuating pass rates over the years.
