Abstract

The global food crisis is unavoidable when the world’s population is unable to anticipate the phenomena of climate change, increasing environmental pollution, and the shrinking of agricultural land amid an uncontrolled population boom. FAO predicts that food availability will continue to decline, while food demand in developing countries will increase by 60 percent in 2030 and will double by 2050, so that significant action and global community participation are required to face the crisis. Indonesia is categorized as a food-vulnerable country, yet it has the potential to overcome the crisis and even increase food production. Limited support in agricultural resources and food security literacy has resulted in sub?optimal public participation in independent food production. Purpose: (1) to analyze the concept and process of implementing extension journalism in the media; and (2) to formulate strategies for implementing extension journalism in multiplatform media in an effort to enhance community food security literacy. The urgency of this study lies in the notion that the concept of extension journalism can accelerate and enrich public literacy on efforts to build food security at the household and community levels. The method employed is a qualitative approach using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. SLR is used to find and analyze various concepts and models of extension-oriented journalism significantly to reconstruct the current concept of extension journalism. Result: (1) the concept of extension journalism is understood as the dissemination of innovation information through verified conventional mass media (print, terrestrial, and digital); and (2) strategies for implementing extension journalism include regulations and the development of social responsibility awareness among media managers and all journalists involved in content production.

Abstract

Abstract. This study examines the multiplatform transformation of PT Tempo Inti Media Tbk as an Indonesian legacy media organization responding to digital disruption and the decline of print journalism. Background: The research is grounded in Dynamic Capabilities Theory, which explains how organizations sense opportunities, seize strategic directions, and transform internal structures, and Media Ecology Theory, which positions media change as an ecological shift affecting newsroom practices and audience behavior. These theories guide the study's primary objective: to analyze Tempo's adaptive strategies across technological, editorial, and business dimensions. Methods: This qualitative case study employs in-depth interviews with editors and digital managers, documentation of internal reports and platform analytics, and observational analysis of the integrated newsroom workflow. The primary outcomes measured include Tempo's platform integration, content production processes, and the implementation of communication strategies across digital channels. Results and Discussion: The findings show that Tempo undergoes three phases of transformation digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation supported by cross-platform content distribution, data-driven editorial decisions, and the restructuring of the newsroom into an integrated production system. Previous research on legacy media digital transformation aligns with these findings, particularly regarding the role of organizational agility and technological adoption. The theoretical connection reveals that Dynamic Capabilities shape Tempo's strategic decisions, while Media Ecology explains the broader communication shifts influencing platform adaptation. Conclusion: Tempo's transformation demonstrates how legacy media can develop strategic capabilities and communication practices to remain relevant and sustainable within a rapidly evolving digital ecosystem.   Keywords: communications theory; digital journalism; legacy media; media ecology; multiplatform transformation

Abstract

The designation of Hasto Kristiyanto as a suspect by the KPK triggered political communication dynamics in the digital space that demonstrated how audiences interpret media coverage diversely based on their ideological positions. This research aims to identify media message construction through Pan and Kosicki's framing analysis, analyze factors influencing audience decoding processes, and identify dominant, negotiated, and oppositional patterns in audience reception of Hasto Kristiyanto news coverage in Tempo.co and Kompas.com distributed through X and Instagram platforms from February 1 to June 30, 2025. The study employs a qualitative approach using netnographic methods and content analysis based on Stuart Hall's (1980) encoding/decoding theory and Pan and Kosicki's framing analysis, with data collected through digital observation of 2,139 comments, content documentation, and in-depth interviews with 7 key informants. Research findings reveal that Kompas.com employs procedural-neutral framing focusing on legal aspects while Tempo.co applies critical framing emphasizing power conflicts, audience reception is divided into three decoding positions namely dominant (597), negotiated (579), and oppositional (566), with platform X encouraging negotiated decoding through debate culture while Instagram reinforces oppositional decoding through emotional visual content, influenced by factors of political affiliation, media literacy, collective experiences regarding corruption issues, and digital platform characteristics within the context of power relations and society's ideological structures.

Abstract

This study seeks to examine the phenomenon of participatory fan culture and practices of celebrity worship surrounding Indonesian artist Raffi Ahmad by applying Henry Jenkins’ theoretical framework on media convergence and participatory culture. This research is designed as an intrinsic case study, focusing specifically on the Indonesian digital ecosystem to provide an in-depth understanding of a particular cultural phenomenon and to avoid overgeneralization beyond this context. Using a qualitative research design, the study employs digital content analysis combined with virtual ethnography to explore how participatory practices and celebrity worship are constructed and sustained among Raffi Ahmad’s fans across multiple digital media platforms in Indonesia. The results show that fans are not positioned merely as passive audiences, but rather as active participants and content producers, or prosumers. They actively create and circulate fan-made content such as video edits, memes, reaction videos, and promotional materials related to RANS Entertainment. Furthermore, fans develop strong parasocial relationships facilitated by real-time interactions through live streaming features, which reinforce the perception of two-way intimacy between the celebrity and his audience. The research also identifies processes of absorption that, in some cases, evolve into addictive patterns of media use. These are reflected in behaviors such as continuous monitoring of celebrity-related content, fear of missing out (FOMO), and habitual doomscrolling. From a psychological perspective, Raffi Ahmad’s content provides emotional comfort for some fans, while for others it functions as a form of digital escapism from everyday pressures.

Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of modern life, particularly for Generation Z as digital natives who actively engage with platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp. While social media offers opportunities for interaction, information access, and self-expression, its impact on academic achievement remains paradoxical, as it can both support learning and create distractions. This study examines the influence of social support, motivation, and self-regulation on academic achievement, with social media usage patterns as mediating variable. Grounded in Uses and Gratifications Theory and Self-Determination Theory, this research employs a quantitative explanatory approach using PLS-SEM. Data were collected through a questionnaire from 300 undergraduate students at private universities in Jakarta. The findings indicate that social support, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and self-regulation significantly influence academic achievement, with self-regulation as the strongest predictor. Furthermore, the intensity and purpose of social media use significantly mediates these relationships, showing that academic outcomes depend on how students align social media use with learning goals. This study highlights that social media can function as a supportive academic tool when used purposefully. The novelty lies in integrating UGT and SDT with behavior constructs of self-regulation and social support to explain how mediated social media use shapes academic achievement among Generation Z students in Jakarta.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of soft masculinity among Indonesian Generation Z males through the “Fineshyt” trend on TikTok. Based on the theories of hybrid masculinity, gender performativity, and multimodal discourse analysis, this study aims to deconstruct how this digital trend produces and normalizes non-aggressive masculine identities. Using a qualitative approach and multimodal discourse analysis methods, 15 TikTok videos with the hashtag #fineshyt from the period July–October 2025 were purposively selected and analysed. The findings show that soft masculinity in this trend is characterized by reflexive protective gestures, emotional control (nonchalance), and the strategic use of point of view (POV) narratives. Collectively, these elements construct an image of masculinity that is calm, situational, and empathetic-protective. However, the analysis also reveals ambivalence: while offering an alternative to hegemonic macho masculinity, this soft masculinity subtly reproduces gender power hierarchies by consistently positioning men as active protectors and women as the protected. This study concludes that the Fineshyt trend represents a rearticulation—not a rejection—of masculine power into a form that is more acceptable in Gen Z's affective-digital culture. This study extends the discourse on affective-digital culture in Indonesia by demonstrating how soft masculinity operates as an affective and algorithmically mediated strategy that rearticulates masculine power through emotionally resonant and multimodal performances.

Abstract

Recurring floods on the island of Sumatra highlight the complex interaction between deforestation, climate change, and environmental governance; however, this relationship is often inadequately represented in media discourse. This study aims to analyze how national and international media frame deforestation and flooding issues from a sustainable development perspective. This research employs a qualitative case study approach, drawing on Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which conceptualizes discourse as a social practice that reflects power relations and ideology. Data were collected from 30 national and international news articles published in 2025 using the NCapture feature and analyzed with NVivo 12 Plus. The analysis focuses on lexical patterns, actor representation, and the construction of relationships between deforestation, climate change, and responsibility distribution. The findings reveal significant differences in media framing. National media tend to emphasize extreme weather and disaster impacts, while international media consistently link flooding to deforestation and ecosystem degradation. These patterns indicate that media discourse can either naturalize environmental disasters or expose their structural causes. This study contributes theoretically by integrating Critical Discourse Analysis with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 15: Life on Land), offering a novel analytical framework to understand how media discourse shapes environmental accountability and sustainable development narratives in Indonesia.

Abstract

The expansion of digital public services reflects changing communication practices aimed at increasing participation and social justice. Grounded in Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations and attitude–intention communication frameworks, this study examines how attitudes and intentions influence the adoption of the Silacakperak application for reporting violence against women and children. It hypothesizes that attitude positively affects intention and innovation adoption, with intention acting as a mediator. A quantitative explanatory design was applied using a survey of 384 respondents in Tangerang City. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using statistical models to test direct and mediating relationships among attitude, intention, and innovation adoption. The findings show that attitude significantly influences intention and innovation adoption, while intention also has a significant positive effect on adoption and mediates the attitude–adoption relationship. These results are consistent with prior communication studies and empirically support diffusion of innovations theory in the context of digital public service communication. Attitude and intention are central communicative factors in the adoption of digital reporting applications, underscoring the importance of persuasive communication strategies in technology-based public services.

Abstract

The development of Indonesia’s creative economy depends not only on technological innovation but also on the ability to utilize cultural and natural potential as valuable economic assets. This study aims to analyze the role of strategic communication in transforming culture and nature into sustainable creative economic investments. The research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method on creative economy development programs based on culture and ecotourism in selected regions. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that strategic communication plays a vital role in building synergy among the government, creative economy actors, and local communities. Effective communication strategies transform public perceptions of cultural values and natural resources from mere heritage to sustainable economic resources. Moreover, digital media utilization expands promotional reach and strengthens regional branding as a creative destination. The study concludes that the successful transformation of culture and nature into sustainable creative economic investments relies on holistic, participatory, and adaptive communication planning responsive to social and technological changes. Thus, strategic communication functions not merely as a message delivery tool but as a transformative instrument for social change toward a sustainable creative economy.

Abstract

The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed how humans communicate and make sense of technology. One notable example is ChatGPT, an AI-based conversational system that has become embedded in everyday digital life, functioning not only as a tool but also as a communicative partner. This study aims to map public discourse about ChatGPT on X (Twitter) using a semantic network analysis approach. Data were collected from user posts mentioning the keyword “ChatGPT” during August 2025. The dataset was processed and analyzed in Gephi to calculate degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and modularity, and then qualitatively interpreted through Papacharissi’s (2015) Affective Publics framework. The results reveal two dominant clusters: a functional cluster that emphasizes ChatGPT’s role as a productivity and learning assistant, and an emotional cluster that reflects users’ affective attachment to ChatGPT as a conversational companion that provides empathy and emotional validation. The “ChatGPT” node achieved the highest betweenness centrality, signifying its bridging position between rational and affective dimensions of human–machine communication. Drawing on the Affective Publics perspective, the study concludes that digital public spheres are shaped through technologically mediated emotional resonance and collective storytelling, producing new forms of shared meaning and social connectedness within Indonesia’s digital society.
