Abstract

Abstract- Nowadays, spatial experience still plays important role in the making of the good quality of architectural spaces. The experience of the space is a multi-sensory experience, so architecture should emphasize its attention not only to visual experience but also other experience like auditory experience. The study was conducted to determine the dynamics connection of soundscape experience and The Seven Sorrows of Virgin Saint Mary Church, Pandu Street, Bandung. The research method is qualitative and descriptive analysis. The analysis is done through questionnaire distribution, field observation, analysis, and by relating it with the study of theories about church architecture, soundscape, sense of place, intention of architecture, and perception theory. In The Seven Sorrows Of Virgin Saint Mary Church are found quite a lot of source of noise which are considered as sounds that decline the quality of the people spatial experience. The noise sounds that are found there are the sound of airplane, motor vehicle, and many more. Those noises can disturb the praying activity. This indicates that there are some architectural elements that have not been able to work optimally. It can be the material, activity settings, building and site shape or character. Furthermore, relation between activity schedule and noises climax will be analized.Through design that concern in the multi-sensory aspects of experience, especially in auditory experience, the experience of space can be felt thoroughly and the quality of a public space can be increased. Key Words: Soundscape, Architectural Elements, Church, The Seven Sorrows of Virgin Saint Mary Church

Abstract

Abstract- Sacred space is everywhere and has become the part of human’s life since thousand years ago. One manifestation of the sacred space is the Catholic Church. A sacred space in the Catholic Church should be able to accommodate liturgical activities in accordance with the rules and the order of their activities so the celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy can run well. This study will attempt to understand the concept and the manifestation of the sacred space found in Romo Mangunwijaya’s churches in accordance to the concept and the manifestation of the Catholic Church’s sacred space.Research will be carried out based on a preliminary study conducted by studying the universal sacred space theory proposed by Eliade and the theory of the Catholic Church’s sacred space that refers to the principles of the liturgy space. Results of analysis of each object of the study will then be processed further through a comparison table so that it can be concluded the manifestation of a sacred space in Romo Mangunwijaya’s churches. From the results of research on the objects of the study, showed that the manifestation of the sacred space of the Romo Mangunwijaya’s Churches dominantly shown in terms of orientation, ornaments, and atmosphere. In addition, the case study that shows the most dominant manifestation of the sacred space is Theresia Salam Church. The benefits of this research are: for general public, this research can improve the knowledge of the importance of the sacred space within the Catholic Church and how to integrate local values and culture into the sacred space concept established in the Catholic Church's rules. Meanwhile, for the architects and institutions of the Catholic Church, this research can improve the knowledge of the concept of sacred space in the Catholic Church and how to manifest the concept of the sacred space into the architecture of the Catholic Church. Key Words: sacred space, church, Y.B. Abstract

Abstract- Cilincing and Marunda are two kampongs situated in the north of Jakarta, immediately bordering on the Java Sea. The existence of the fishing villages sketches the lives of these communities. They make their living out of catching fish and other produce, so the lives of the fishing community take place between water and land. This situation has led to their settlement differing from others in the urban kampong. The synergy stimulated by the water-based context has inspired the unique architectural features of these villages, in terms of planning the lay-out of the dwelling-places or residential area. This research study is a descriptive-comparative analysis of the exploitation of exterior space based on the configuration pattern of the mass lay-out of the fishing villages observed. The data collection technique consists of gathering the relevant physical data along with those covering related activities. The physical data have been obtained by way of field mapping and observation, while the data concerning activities have been collected through observation and interviews conducted with the respondents, namely the inhabitants of the Cilincing fishing village (RT 012) and of Marunda (RT 03). The data have been divided based on the major outdoor activities of the community involved (sea-faring and residing). Finally, a comparison has been drawn between the research results of these two villages. The findings indicate that the configuration of the mass lay-out in these two fishing villages has created a quality of exterior space exploitation that is different as well. The one that displays a scattered lay-out pattern has a large volume of exterior space at its disposal that is left unexploited by its inhabitants, both for sea-bound activities and residential land-bound ones. The propinquity of the mass has created exterior space that is more intimate in nature. Keywords: Configuration of mass lay-out, exterior space

Abstract

Abstract- The Kasepuhan Cirebon Palace is a living and standing city monument that acts as a city artifact. The existence of the palace itself has been established since the fourteenth century as the kingdom’s capital. A castle cannot stand on its own as a city monument, hence the existence of urban function elements such as; Housing, Circulation, and Fixed Activities as described by Aldo Rossi in The Architecture of the city, 1982. Within the complex of this palace, there are two main areas surrounded by a fortress wall, namely the Keraton complex as the dwelling for Sultan Sepuh (the King), and the Kampung Mandalangen Complex as the dwelling for abdi dalem (servants, subordinates) and royal relatives. The method used in this research is descriptive-quantitative with Continuity, Connectivity, and Depth analysis (Marshall, Stephen, Streets & Patterns. 2003) to discover Street Types in the form of stem, spine and cross-connector within the area. After discovering the Backbone of the complex, (the writer) then descriptively provides the Ragaan (visual/description) in the form of the orientation of the complexes towards one another. In time, many changes have happened to this area. Special mention must be made of the phenomenon of open/close permeability to the Keraton Kasepuhan Cirebon (between complexes and outside of the complex), along with the phenomenon of spatial non-physical aspects (palatial policy and citizens’ behavior) that affects the spatial physical element. Both phenomena have created a shift in the Circulation link structure of both complexes, as well as relations between both complexes. Abstract

Abstract- At a glance, the Church of Saint which Laurensius located in Serpong is like a church built in the past. However, when traced, it turns out this church is a new church that was built in 2007 by applying the Style of Gothic Architecture on the building. The application of elements of gothic architecture is not only visible from the outside of the church, but also on the inside of the church. For that, it will be further investigated about the application of any gothic elements contained in the study object.Gothic architectural elements are divided into several periods based on its development, ranging from Early Gothic, High Gothic, Late Gothic to Gothic Revival or Neo-Gothic. Gothic architectural elements have different characteristics and characters in each period of development. In this research, discussed theories about elements in gothic architecture based on its development. There are 17 elements analyzed in this research. These seventeen elements are summarized into three major sections covering the structural elements, non-structural elements, and spatial arrangements. Analysis of the application of gothic architectural elements to the Church of St. Laurensius begins by describing the elements present in the study object and then compared with the gothic architectural elements of the gothic period described in the second chapter. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be seen that from 17 elements observed, 12 elements of which are adapted from the building elements contained in the period of neo-gothic architecture.  Key Words: Gothic, Period, Element, Architecture, Neo-Gothic

Abstract

Abstract - The cultural from of acculturation that has been taking place in Indonesia since the arrival of foreign traders who colonized Indonesia and influenced its traditional architectural culture with non-local architecture yielded a new hybrid form called the Dutch East Indies style. This forms real, tangible evidence of the presence of non-local cultural acculturation with Indonesian indigenous culture. The Bale Gili building at the Soekasada Ujung Park is one example of this phenomenon, built in the Dutch Colonial Era by a Dutch architect named Van Den Hentz. The impact made by Dutch colonial architecture is immediately apparent, but there are also Balinese ornaments in the entire scope of the Water Palace that must be taken into account. The dominant ornaments, their role and significance in the architectural acculturation process and the extent of this acculturation between local and non-local (Dutch) architecture in the Bale Gili building need to be explored by way of extending the acculturation of this typical Indies type of architecture. The descriptive method has been employed to interpret the concrete presence of the Bale Gili building, followed by the analytical method applied to the object of research, subsequently correlated with theoretical study of the ornamentation in the architecture of the building in addition to its anatomical theory. The findings show that the dominant ornaments in the Bale Gili building are the ones based on religion and local beliefs. A closer examination of the ornaments by way of extending architectural acculturation indicates that these ornaments based on religious beliefs in this particular building reveal a concrete form of acculturation between the Dutch colonial style of architecture and the Balinese traditional style. Abstract

Abstract - The post-Independence era saw the beginning of the development of modern architecture in Indonesia. In this particular era the profession of architect emerged as a requirement that eventually also turned into one of the fields that played a role in the development of Indonesian architecture. As one of the first architects, Mohammad Soesilo joined in participating in drawing up the main principles of architectural design valid for that era, a theorem that can be said to be influential to this day, serving as a set of general guidelines. The lack of data available on the dawn of architectural development has created a certain vagueness concerning these principles. In the post-Independence era, Indonesian architects were still strongly influenced by the principles of design being developed, that is to say those governing modern architecture. The purpose of this research is to deepen our insight into into the various principles of architectural design in the post-Independence era to establish how big the influence has been of the principles governing modern architecture that became the guidelines for designs made by Indonesian architects in those days, in order to be able to determine their impact on the design of architectural works in Indonesia itself. This research has been conducted by examining one of the buildings designed by Mohammad Soesilo, namely Parahyangan Catholic University’s Post-graduate Studies Building. The focus of research revolves around the question whether this building can be classified as one designed with the principles of modern architecture in mind because the design of its physical shape was influenced by the seven variables using the terminology of modern architecture. These seven variables have influenced the attainment of function, expression, and technology in Parahyangan Catholic University’s Post-graduate Studies Building as one that has been well designed. Abstract

Abstract - The overly rapid development of commercial functions has changed the lay-out (massing) of Pasar Baru and its environs, along with the horizontal and vertical expansion of buildings, causing a typo-morphological transformation, leading to problems with the lay-out in terms of scale, façade, orientation, and building height. This research study is followed by a description of this lay-out and its impact on the blocks and corridors of Jalan Otto Iskandar Dinata (Otista) by way of the qualitative-descriptive survey method, complemented by study of the relevant background literature, and a discussion of the typo-morphological transformation of Jalan Otista. The changes have impacted the blocks and corridors. The former came in the shape of the residential pockets being wedged together, a change of circulation in these pockets, disorientation of the block mass, and asymmetry or discrepancy observed in the building scale. The latter took the shape of changes in the building façades that tend to be heterogeneous, assymetry or discrepancy in the building scale, the interrupted arcade and non-defined entrance doors to alleys. The conclusion shows that this area displays a typo-morphology of building façades that is relatively heterogeneous. This area will experience vertical building with a larger building mass of blocks that is relatively larger in volume. In turn, this will cause the residential pockets within the blocks to disappear although some of these are bound to survive. This study may provide useful input for the municipal government in anticipating and overcoming the problems surrounding the spatial lay-out and urban planning of a developing city. Keywords: transformation, mass lay-out, block, corridor

Abstract

Abstract- The introduction the new infrastructures in the city of Bandung is being executed in order to tackle various urban problems, such as the lack of pedestrian-friendly spacse and the lack of public spaces throughout the city. In 2017, the Local Government of Bandung opened Teras Cihampelas, which is a skywalk-type of infrastructure that was built above Cihampelas Street in order to relocate the street vendors that had been occupying the pedestrianway in Jalan Cihampelas and to become a new public space. The new structure, in fact, affects the scale and proportion of the spaces between buildings along the road and reconfigurated the visual qualities of the existing street. Therefore, the visual experiences in the pedestrianway throughout Cihampelas Street had also affected by the changes of those factors. The method used in this research is a qualitative triangulation method which can be done by mapping the typology of the space between buildings based on the existing buildings’ intensity for further analysis which consist of scale and proportion analysis, and walkability analysis that was based on visual evaluation. The analysis of each typology will then be mapped and merged in each pedestrianways to provide the visual experiences of the pedestrian in Cihampelas Street. The visual quality in Cihampelas Street appears to slightly exceed the minimum comfortability standard but still far from the maximum comfort for a pedestrianway. This problem appears because there are lacks of legibility and imageability that the pedestrian can grasp in most parts of the pedestrianway. But aside from those factors, other factors like transparency, complexity, and coherence in Cihampelas Street are highly achieved so that the pedestrianway can still be comfortably walkable by the pedestrians Key Words: scale, proportion, visual quality, walkabillity, visual experience, pedestrian, qualitative triangulation method, Cihampelas Street

Abstract

Abstract- Kalimantan (Borneo) is famous as the island of a Pulau Seribu due to the large number of rivers that run across its cities. One of the longest is the Kahayan river that flows through the city of Palangka Raya. The river as an important aspect in Kalimantan people’s life has made it the starting point for the embryo of a city in the form of river side dwellings that keeps on developing amidst the dynamics of the Kahayan river that undergoes a high degree of change in terms of water level during the dry and rainy seasons. The issue that arises is the addition and loss of space due to the changes of the river water level. The purpose of this research is to describe the adaptation strategies used by the writer in Kampung Pahandut that is unique when compared other kampongs (villages) due to its condition of having dry and flooded streets in the dwelling area. This research is qualitative in nature, employing the narrative descriptive method. The data collection technique uses purposive sampling to collect the physical and activity data. The physical and activity data were gained through a survey of the research object as well as picture taking, field observation, as well as the medium ofinterviews conducted with the Kampung Pahandut villagers. The data was then processed by classifying the numerous changes that had happened in both physical and activity-related terms as well as analyzing and concluding the adaptation strategies. It was found that in Kampung Pahandut there were both physical and activity-related changes as efforts to accommodate its people to enable them to survive the dry and flooding condition due to the changes of the river water level. Within these efforts there was also architectural adaptation based on the study consisting of three adaptation strategies, namely: being adjustable, refittable, and movable. Keywords: architectural adaptation, changes in water level, Kahayan River, Kampung Pahandut
