Abstract

Abstract- A given space requires a specific design for it to function in the best possible way. Many aspects need to be taken into consideration, and the same principle applies to an auditorium. Its space requires proper handling of the right acoustics to optimize the activities to be held there, among others space employed for the purpose of staging theatrical performances and concerts. Ideally speaking, these activities must prioritize the use of natural (purely acoustic) sound without resorting to an electric amplifier. Therefore, an appropriate acoustic design of the space to be used is of the utmost necessity. Each of these spaces has its own criteria to optimize the activities that are held there. To examine the acoustic quality of a given space, there are several prerequisites that must be fulfilled, starting from the form and materials used, the sound’s volume level, sound distribution, reverberation time, acoustic flaws or shortcomings and noise reduction or sound control. Using the explorative method and post-performance evaluation, this research study investigates the capability of the Arts Building called Gedung Kesenian in Jakarta to accommodate two different activities, both from the angle of the specific activity and the prerequisites for the space used. Gedung Kesenian Jakarta has attempted to surmount the problem of echo/reverb that is different for the theatrical and musical performances. However, the too widely diverging values have prompted the need for adding portable elements that are passive in nature in order to maximize the sound reflection, evenness of sound distribution, reverb time as well as dealing with the problem of the echoing sound area, referred to as “shadow sound”.Keywords: acoustic suitability, acoustics of theater space, acoustics of concert space, reverberation time

Abstract

Abstract - Yogyakarta’s Keraton palace forms part of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) that has architectural values of high standing. Apart from this, the hall called Sri Manganti takes specific pride of place in this palace. The purpose of this research project is to reveal these architectural aspects through establishing their cultural significance, meaningful architectural elements and the conservational measures applied to this particular hall. The theories employed for this piece of research include the Capon theory, the Orbasli theory, the Feilden theory, the Forsythe theory, and finally the Javanese Tradition Architectural theory. The methods used consist of the descriptive and the qualitative method along with the architectural approach to the matter of the building’s form and function, and the local conservation of the various cultural meanings. The cultural significance of the Sri Manganti hall lies in the application of the Javanese architectural concept of Joglo Mangkurat (referring to the roof’s steep upper section) along with the hanging structure known as Lambung Gantung, aesthetic appreciation of Javanese culture and tradition and exhibition and performance of Javanese art. The architectural and aesthetic values can be discerned in its architectural components consisting of the fundament, floor, poles/pillars, supporting and upper wooden beams called ander & molo, ceiling, roof, various decorations and the general lay-out. A valuable building like this has apparently suffered from loss of quality in the components of its construction. This decline in quality could have been caused by the impact of the tropical climate, faulty maintenance and certain questionable human measures taken. On the other hand, it turns out that the change of function into an exhibition venue for art has actually brought added value in terms of the building’s usefulness. This building falls under the essential buildings that make up the Keraton palace, so its general condition needs to be properly maintained, both with the measures taken to adapt and conserve it for the future. Keywords: architectural value, aesthetic value, conservation, adaptation, preservation

Abstract

Abstract- Visually impaired is a general term to describe the condition of a person experiencing disability to their sense of sight. Due to the disability, the process of orientation and mobility of the people with visually impairment is inhibited. Therefore they try to increase their sensitivity of other senses like sense of touch, sense of smell, and sense of hearing to obtain information from the surrounding physical environment. PSBN Wyata Guna is a residential for the visually impaired, as the physical environment it must have physical elements that can provide information which affect effectivelly to the orientation and mobility of the visually impaired. The purpose of this study is to find out what physical elements in the environment of PSBN Wyata Guna that affect the orientation and mobility of the visually impaired and how effective the influence of these elements. This study use qualitative descriptive methods by mapping the behavior of fourteen respondents (person-centered mapping) who do orientation and mobility in the physical environment of PSBN Wyata Guna. Physical environments are classified based on elements that define the space, ie horizontal and vertical planes, which is, tactile pavements, materials differences, Ramps, steps, corridor columns, ceramic walls, shrubs, and hand railling. Observations held on Saturday and Sunday in the morning-afternoon when most of visually impaired do their activities outside the dorm. The result of this research shows that  people with visual impairment in the environment of PSBN Wyata Guna use the physical environment to obtain information for their orientation and mobility. This orientation and mobility activity is mostly affected by tactile pavements, ceramic walls, and Ramps. Shrubs and hand railling have less role to the orientation and mobility of the visually impaired. Thus, it can be concluded that the physical environment of PSBN Wyata Guna is influential in the orientation and mobility of the visually impaired. Key Words: orientation and mobility, visually impaired, physical environments, physical elements, PSBN Wyata Guna

Abstract

Abstract - The limited amount of land available on the mainland of the Kuin region has triggered the emergence of permanent stilt houses on the river resulting in new settlements as part of the Kuin region. As a matter of fact, these houses on stilts on the riverbank in the Kuin Kampong do not have a well-defined division marker with the air-based space of the river, so that this particular territory is only based on the perception of the individual owners. This research study aims to shed light on territorial behavior and the perceptual territory model to be found at this location. The data collection method was initially conducted by way of direct observation and conducting interviews with various prominent society figures selected from the local community. After the case study object had been selected, in-depth research was conducted into territorial behavior observed in these case studies. The result indicates that there are two perceptual territory models out of the six cases examined based on their territorial attitude. The first one concerns the perceptual territory model pointing toward the front (mainland) up to the road network, and pointing backwards, to the river. On the other hand, on the immediate left and right side of the buildings, they press close on the space owned by their neighbors. The second one comprises the perceptual territory model pointing toward the mainland (reaching the houses across) pointing backwards to the the river, and to the immediate left or right of the buildings. Abstract

Abstract- Eclectic architecture is a product of globalization in which architectural styles from different places and time intertwine each other. The development of eclectic architecture in Indonesia tends to follow the trend, neglecting the local value. A study towards eclectic architecture is necessary to raise society’s concern towards the identification of foreign and local architectural style. Masjid PUSDAI Bandung is selected as a research object to represent these issues above, in which the architectural style of Spain, Indian, and Javanese mosque intertwined each other. The research’s purpose towards the research object as a representation of eclectic architecture is to define the meaning of eclectic architecture in Masjid PUSDAI as well as to understand the form of eclecticism in Masjid PUSDAI. The eclectic architecture form will be analyzed towards the mixture of Indian, Spain, and Javanese mosque architecture style.Literature study as a theoretical base consist of the main theories such as the theory of eclectic architecture and theory of form and technic, as well as the supporting theories such as the architecture of Spain, Indian, and Javanese mosque. A comparative-qualitative approach is used as research method. This method compares the documentation from building observation with the literature theories for a further analysis.Through this research it can be concluded that the eclectic architecture form of Masjid PUSDAI Bandung is seen through mixture of two to three architecture style among its elements, thus forming a new architecture style. However, the intertwinement of architecture style doesn’t show on several elements. Some of them show an identical form which is used in Indian, Spain, and Javanese mosque. This research is expected to educate readers, architecture students, and experts in academic fileds, about how to execute the eclectic architecture design in public facilities, especially on mosques in Indonesia. Keywords: eclectic, architecture, mosque

Abstract

Abstract- As one of the relics of the Classical Era, temples and shrines have been known as a means of worshipping the gods and goddesses or one’s ancestors, especially in the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism. Observers often regard the ornaments of these temples as mere visual art objects, as eye candy that may beautify their outward appearance. However, when examined more closely, these ornaments carry a certain meaning in each of the temples. The aim of this research study is to explore the deeper significance of these ornaments and their location. This research can be classified as qualitative, using the descriptive-analytical method. Employing the Purposive Sampling method regarding ornamentation, eleven temples have been selected that meet the research requirements. Both Hinduism and Buddhism have been known to make a division into three worlds, namely the lower, middle and upper spheres. This division has also shaped the elements of temples into their respective head, body and legs/feet. Further categorization yields six motifs, all of which can be found in temples in various shapes, consisting of several types of ornament that embellish the three elements mentioned above. Each of the motifs carries a variety of meanings. In this research study, the relationship between the meanings and their exact location (placement) is analyzed, indicating that they are in keeping with the division into three worlds, but then again there are ones that do not follow that pattern, and still others that are not affected at all. Development of the physical shape of the ornaments has occurred in several ornaments, but the majority of the changes in their physical shape has left no impact on the meaning contained within these ornaments. Keywords: temple, ornament, meaning, placement, physical shape

Abstract

Abstract- Sopo is a granary house in traditional Batak Toba architecture. Sopo is important for Batak Toba community because it serves as a place to store rice which is the source of life. Nowadays sopo is harder to find than ruma. Most of the sopo has transformed into Batak Toba house and uses as a residence. Sopo is located in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, which is prone to earthquakes. Sopo Nagari Sihotang was built in the 1920s and has experienced many earthquakes, now the sopo still survive without any structural damage. The resistance of the sopo over the years proves the sopo resilience to earthquakes. From the evidence of resilience to earthquake, its interesting to investigate the tectonics of this sopo. The purpose of the research is to understand the tectonic of Sopo Nagari Sihotang that resilience to earthquake and find local wisdom in facing earthquake disaster. The research used descriptive method with qualitative approach by describing the existing state of Sopo Nagari Sihotang and comparing it with tectonic theory and earthquake resistant structure. The sopo’s data were collected by field observation and literature study. The data are grouped into four parts, namely construction, detail, space, and ornaments that become points for analysis of tectonics. Tectonic analysis is associated with the theory of earthquake resistant structures to find out what makes tectonic of the sopo resilient to earthquakes. The result is the tectonic resilience of the Sopo Nagari Sihotang to earthquakes are found in the tectonics construction in the use of materials; tectonics detail on vertical structures and horizontal structures; and tectonics space at the story height – the activity, the spatial form – the building hape, the spatial form - the structure, and the activity - the structure. The tectonic resilience of Sopo Nagari Sihotang to earthquakes is not found in the tectonics construction and tectonics ornament. The local wisdom which are the main factors make the sopo resilience to earthquake are found on, the tectonics detail of the sopo post-batu ojahan can retain the sopo by relying on the frictional force resulting from self-weight of the sopo; the tectonics detail of the sopo post-ransang can bind every sopo posts; the use of lightweight wood materials thus reducing inertia forces. Key Words: resilience, tectonics, sopo, earthquake, Batak Toba

Abstract

Abstract- Modern building design today has a tendency to focus only on the inner space, while the outer space only as space remaining from processing the space inside. Understanding of space in the context of modern-western architecture is certainly not necessarily in harmony with the understanding of space in the context of traditional Javanese architectureBased on the ongoing activities in traditional Javanese buildings, it shows the composition of spatial arrangement that allows interaction with the environment so that it is sustainable and responsive to nature / climate. The mass of the building can be seen as the visual boundary of the space marker, so it can be processed, among others, by given certain pressures such as the use of ornamentation, etc.According to Professor of Southeast Asian Archaeological National University of Singapore John N. Miksic the power of Majapahit range includes Sumatra and Singapore and even Thailand as evidenced by the influence of culture, building style, temple, sculpture and art. Trowulan itself is the capital and civilization center of Java Majapahit. Nagarakretagama mentions the palatial culture of a noble and elegant, with delicate artistry and literature, as well as a complicated religious ritual system. Majapahit temples good quality geometrically by utilizing the sap of vines and brown sugar as a brick adhesive. This style of building can still be found in Java and Bali architecture. In addition, Trowulan has a reservoir system called "Segaran", which functions as flood control and water source during drought. This research is trying to understand elements of ancient city of Trowulan and searching for the wealth of urban spatial Javanese - hindu this and looking for potential development in the present, The research will be done descriptively argumentative with qualitative approach through study on urban spatial Trowulan to modern area precedent.  Key Words: Urban Planning, Open Space, Majapahit Capital, Trowulan, Javanese- Hindu Civilization, Mandala

Abstract

Abstract- Lighting plays an important role in space formation and supporting activities. The utilization of natural lighting for the sake of saving energy can serve that purpose at noon. In the office, good natural lighting will support effienct use of energy by not using artificial lighting. The particular kind of sunlight that feels comfortable for office use should be the non-direct one which is reflected first. Therefore, the natural lighting design should pay attention to this, from the exterior to the interior elements, especially the reflecting surface providing non-direct sunlight. As one of Jakarta’s satellite cities, Bekasi’s development keeps increasing. New housing areas appear and require marketing offices as working areas and for image branding. The marketing office located in Vida Bekasi in East Bekasi uses no artificial lighting at noon. This research discusses what kind of role reflecting surfaces play in achieving a dark and luminous effect for Vida Bekasi marketing office’s work-related activities, by focusing on office rooms A and B. Room A on the first floor and room B on the second floor are interesting topics for discussion as they share the reflecting surface element even though the effect differs. This research can be classified as evaluative-descriptive, employing both the qualitative and quantitative methods. The research started off with interviews conducted with both the architect and the site architect, in addition to literature study, magazine articles, brochures, and internet sources. The calculations were made with a ruler and lux meter, and simulation was conducted with the Velux Daylight Visualizer 3.The analysis concludes that the reflecting surface configuration ranging from form and color to texture is one of the possible strategies to optimize natural lighting in offices. Keywords : natural lighting, reflecting surface, Vida Bekasi marketing office

Abstract

Abstract- In terms of history, proportion, composition and geometry have been applied as design elements since long ago, way before the era of modern architecture. The existence of these three elements enables numerous variations and produces freedom of expression. Unfortunately, in current design processes, these visual principles are often overlooked. In fact, they play a role as one of the indicators of aesthetics of a building, as well as exerting influence on human perception in capturing and perceiving a given space. The purpose of this research is to study the application of proportion and composition principles to one of the creations of the Indonesian modern architect Frederich Silaban. The BNI 46 Building design by Silaban acts as the research object, displaying a façade which is crammed with modern thoughts, different on each side but remaining harmonious and visually attractive. The theory of proportion, composition, geometry and structuring principles provide the basis for analyzing the existing object. This research uses the descriptive analytical method with the qualitative approach to data collection of the research object. The next step is the vertical and horizontal analysis of the building enclosure in relation to the implementation of geometric proportion and composition principles in the building. This research is expected to be beneficial in terms of enriching the knowledge and study of geometric proportion and proportion in architecture, adding to the consideration of implementing visual principles for professionals, as well as adding to the archive/portfolio concerning Silaban as one of Indonesia’s pioneering modern architects. Keywords: proportion, composition, Geometry, Silaban
