Abstract

When making decisions about disease screening, prevention, and treatment, seeking health information is essential. Access to and methods of obtaining health information are impacted by digital transformation, including in the orthopedics sector. This study aimed to determine the sources of information used by patients at Surabaya Islamic Hospital (RSI) and how patients choose media related to orthopedic services. This study is a quantitative, descriptive, observational study involving 102 respondents and conducted in June 2024. Primary data were collected through a questionnaire covering 25 questions about treatment choices, media exposure, media satisfaction, and social demographics, which will later be analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. In this study, most respondents (279 vs. 228) sought orthopedic information through contemporary media. The most common sources of conventional and contemporary media were Instagram (47,1%) and family (55,9%), respectively. Conventional media accounted for the longest media usage duration (≤ 1 hour per day; 69,7% vs 62,0%). Conventional media were used more frequently (76,8% vs 74,2%) - two to four times a day. Conventional media use was more frequent among respondents (57,9% vs 50,9%). Conventional media were found to be more satisfactory in terms of education, ease of interaction, and information search. In conclusion, Contemporary media offers higher satisfaction levels when seeking orthopedic information, despite conventional media being used more frequently. These findings emphasize the importance of considering both forms of media when marketing.

Abstract

The lateral condyle fracture is the second most prevalent elbow fracture in pediatric populations. Fractures of the distal humerus present challenges regarding diagnosis, treatment, and associated complications. This study aimed to describe the demographic characteristics, treatment modalities, and radiologic outcomes of pediatric lateral condyle humerus fractures managed at Prof. Soeharso Hospital between January 2022 to July 2024. This was a descriptive, retrospective study of pediatric patients diagnosed with lateral condylar humerus fractures during the study period. Patients were classified according to sex, age, treatment method, and outcomes. Data were obtained from hospital medical records and analyzed using Microsoft Excel. Between January 2022 and July 2024, 23 pediatric patients were identified, consisting of 15 boys and 8 girls. The majority of patients (n = 12, 52.2%) were aged 6–10 years. Most patients (n = 21) underwent surgical treatment, while two were treated conservatively. All surgical cases were managed with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF): 20 patients with 2–3 Kirschner wires and one with a screw. Follow-up radiographs at 6–12 months postoperatively showed bone union in 15 patients, malunion in five, and nonunion in one. Among the conservatively treated patients, one developed a malunion and one a nonunion. In conclusion, pediatric patients treated at Prof. Dr. R. Soeharso Orthopaedic Hospital with open reduction and internal fixation achieved satisfactory union rates and remain the preferred technique for managing displaced lateral condyle fractures in children.

Abstract

Diarrhea is the third leading cause of death in children under five, causing nutritional deficits that hinder growth, cognitive, and academic performance. Each episode before the age of 2 years increases the risk of stunting by 5%. Systematic data, such as sociodemographic, clinical characteristics, and laboratory characteristics, are important for prevention. This descriptive observational study used a retrospective design based on medical records of children with acute diarrhea treated at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, from 2021 to 2023. A total of 461 subjects met the criteria; 429 underwent electrolyte imbalance testing, 198 were assessed for urea and creatinine levels, and 68 had their acid-base balance evaluated. A total of 288 subjects (62.5%) were male children; 262 patients (75%) were 0-12 months old; 253 (61%) had good nutritional status; 339 (73.5%) underwent therapy for less than 1 week; and 402 patients (65%) recovered. A total of 40% experienced mild-moderate and severe dehydration with neurologic (16.4%) and respiration comorbidities (16.2%). Electrolyte disturbances included hyponatremia (33.1%), hypokalemia (12.1%), hyperchloremia (50.2%), increased urea (28.3%), abnormal creatinine (35.4%), hypobicarbonate (75%), and acidosis (63.2%). Therefore, early detection and appropriate management are essential to mitigate further complications and improve recovery outcomes.

Abstract

Obesity is characterized by adipocyte accumulation that impairs glucose uptake, leading to insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, and an increased risk of diabetes mellitus. Given the limitations and adverse effects of pharmacological therapies for diabetes, alternative agents are needed. Urtica dioica contains flavonoids with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may improve glucose homeostasis. This experimental study employed a pre-test and post-test control group design using 25 male Sprague Dawley rats divided into five groups: healthy control (K1), obese control (K2), and three obese groups receiving Urtica dioica extract at doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kgBW (D1–D3) for four weeks. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and paired t-test. Administration of Urtica dioica extract at 500 mg/kgBW (D3) significantly reduced blood glucose (79.90 ± 2.51 vs. 177.92 ± 3.30; p<0.05), increased insulin levels (16.20 ± 0.29 vs. 12.82 ± 0.28; p<0.05), decreased HOMA-IR (3.19 ± 0.07 vs. 5.63 ± 0.14; p<0.05), and enhanced HOMA-β (351.20 ± 58.77 vs. 40.21 ± 1.63; p<0.05) compared with untreated obese controls. In conclusion, four-week administration of Urtica dioica extract effectively improved insulin resistance and β-cell function in obese rats, with the most pronounced effect observed at a dose of 500 mg/kgBW.

Abstract

High morbidity rate among mothers and children remains a significant issue requiring special attention. Nanny care is a professional caregiving service provided by trained individuals to care for children in the household. This research adopted a quantitative analytical design utilizing a cross-sectional methodology. The study population comprised all individuals who accessed maternal and child health services at a designated Mother and Child Hospital in the Surabaya region. A total of 50 respondents were selected through probability sampling employing a simple random technique. Data were collected using a modified version of the Family Needs Questionnaire. The sample specifically included mothers receiving antenatal and postnatal care services. Analytical procedures included frequency distributions and correlation analyses to examine the relationship between perceived care needs and the demand for nanny care services, employing the chi-square test with α = 0.05. There was a significant relationship between maternal and child care needs and the availability of support in nanny care services (p = 0.04, α = 0.05). In conclusion, Digital nanny services can be integrated into Maternal and Child Health (MCH) systems by connecting real-time monitoring, health education, and personalized support for mothers and children. This integration enhances early detection of health issues, improves care coordination, and supports data-driven decision-making within MCH programs.

Abstract

Suicide remains a largely hidden public health concern in Indonesia, shaped by pervasive underreporting and religion-based stigma that frequently frames psychological suffering as a manifestation of weak faith. This narrative review critically examines the dual role of religion in suicide prevention, acknowledging its capacity to function both as a protective resource and, under certain interpretive conditions, as a factor that may exacerbate risk through stigma and social exclusion. Rather than aggregating empirical evidence, this review adopts an interpretive and theory-building approach, synthesizing interdisciplinary literature from public health, psychiatry, neurobiology, and Islamic theology to develop a conceptual framework for narrative reconstruction. The analysis highlights that religious teachings can foster hope, meaning, and social belonging, while rigid or judgmental interpretations may intensify shame and hinder help-seeking. Building on this synthesis, the article proposes a normative framework that integrates scientific understandings of psychological pain and neurobiological vulnerability with compassionate theological concepts, such as divine mercy and hope, and with the reinterpretation of ikhtiar and tawakal as supportive of professional mental health care. As a practical illustration, a culturally resonant psychological first aid model—Ask, Listen, Accompany (ALA)—is presented as a community-oriented approach aligned with established global principles, without claiming empirical validation. The framework is intended as a heuristic guide rather than an evidentiary model, and its applicability will vary across Indonesia’s diverse socioreligious contexts. By repositioning religion as complementary to clinical care, this review aims to inform dialogue, guide future empirical research, and support culturally sensitive suicide prevention efforts.

Abstract

Recurrent acute respiratory infections (ARI) in adults continue to pose a significant public health burden, particularly in communities where adherence to preventive behaviors is inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the association between preventive health behaviors and recurrent ARI using a case-based epidemiological approach. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted among 106 adults diagnosed with ARI, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire adapted from PHBS indicators assessing hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, mask use during illness, smoking inside the home, physical distancing when symptomatic, and healthcare-seeking practices. Recurrent ARI was defined as three or more episodes within the previous 12 months, and associations were analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Several preventive behaviors, including inadequate hand hygiene, poor respiratory etiquette, limited mask use, and delayed medical consultation, showed significant relationships with recurrent ARI, with inconsistent behaviors markedly elevating recurrence risk. These findings suggest that strengthening behavior-focused health education in primary care, particularly hygiene promotion, responsible respiratory practices, mask use during illness, and timely care-seeking, may help reduce recurrent ARI among adults.

Abstract

Pulmonary cavities are an important radiological finding in various infectious and non‑infectious diseases. Infection‑related cavities are usually associated with tuberculosis (TB), non‑tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection, chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, and echinococcosis, each with distinct mechanisms of formation and radiologic patterns. In TB and NTM, tissue necrosis and bronchiectasis lead to the formation of cavitary spaces that serve as reservoirs for organisms with a high burden and facilitate transmission. Residual cavities may then undergo secondary colonization by Aspergillus spp, resulting in a spectrum of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis with findings such as aspergilloma and thick‑walled cavities. Echinococcus forms cysts that, when ruptured, can appear as cavitary lesions with the “water lily” sign, adding yet another differential diagnosis for pulmonary cavities. Understanding radiologic patterns, pathogenesis, and microbiological correlations can be used as an important clue to distinguish etiologies and to select appropriate management for patients.

Abstract

Decompression illness (DCI) is a term that encompasses injuries resulting from arterial gas embolism (AGE) and decompression sickness (DCS). It produces symptoms that range from mild musculoskeletal pain to severe neurological involvement. We report the case of a 32-year-old man who developed progressive lower limb weakness, sensory loss below T10, and bowel–bladder dysfunction shortly after a 20-minute compressor-assisted dive. Neurological examination revealed inferior paraplegia with hypoesthesia below the T10 level. MRI showed an intermedullary lesion with spinal cord edema between T8 and T11, consistent with spinal DCI. The patient underwent three sessions of recompression therapy at a secondary hospital without motor improvement and was subsequently referred to a tertiary center. After nine days of hospitalization, partial improvement was observed, though paraplegia persisted. This case highlights the challenges of managing DCI in settings with limited hyperbaric access and emphasizes the importance of early recognition, immediate recompression, and timely referral to improve neurological outcomes and reduce long-term disability in divers.

Abstract

Postoperative pain is a common problem that can slow down patient recovery. Non-pharmacological approaches such as Murottal Al-Qur’an therapy have the potential to help reduce pain intensity. This study aimed to determine the effect of Murottal Al-Qur’an therapy on pain among postoperative patients under general anesthesia. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest control group design was conducted on 76 postoperative patients at the Syekh Yusuf Regional General Hospital, Gowa Regency. Respondents were divided into an intervention group (listening to Murottal for 15 minutes) and a control group (no intervention). Pain intensity was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and the Mann-Whitney test. Results The intervention group showed a significant decrease in pain intensity (p=0.001). The control group also experienced a decrease, but to a lesser extent (p=0.031). Between-group comparisons indicated a significant difference in the post-test results (p=0.010). Conclusion: Murottal Al-Qur’an therapy was associated with a reduction in postoperative pain intensity and may serve as a useful non-pharmacological adjunct therapy.
