Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe 8th-grade students’ misconceptions in solving surface area and volume of beam and cube problems and their causal factors. This is qualitative descriptive research. Based on the research, students’ misconceptions in solving surface area and volume of beam and cube problems are misconceptions on the concept of a beam, misconceptions on the concept of the cube, misconceptions on the concept of prerequisite material, misconceptions on unit comprehension, misconceptions on the understanding of meaning, and misconceptions on sign and number operations. While the causal factors of misconception are students’ assumptions about the lack of importance of concepts so students only memorize formulas, students are not able to associate one concept with other concepts, lack of understanding concepts in prerequisite material, misunderstanding the meaning of words in a problem, students have difficulty understanding pictures., misunderstanding the difference in the size of area and length.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the steps of Group Investigation learning using suling media that can improve the learning outcomes of students. Group Investigation learning has six steps have identifying topics and organizing into groups, planning the investigation, carrying out the investigating, preparing the final report, presenting the final result, and evaluating. The research is a qualitative approach. The data collection techniques used are tests, observations, interviews, and documentation. Analysis of data used: data reduction, data presentation, and withdrawal of conclusions. The validity of data is the perseverance of observer, triangulation, and peer inspection. This research can improve student learning outcomes. This result shows the percentage of student learning outcomes in the pra cycle amounting to 48% that has a rate of 75 and increased during the first cycle with 80%. The result of teacher observation is 89.28%, while the students’ is 78.57%. Based on the results of interviews conducted on four students who were the subject of interviews, one of which didn’t increase learning outcome, but liked suling media when interviewed.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the student's number sense in solving math problems in terms of the verbalizer's cognitive style. This is qualitative research, with research instruments are cognitive style tests, problem-solving tests, and interview guides. The results showed that (1) at the reading and thinking stage, the students' could identify questions and explain mathematical terms and numbers in the questions appropriately, (2) at the exploring and planning stage, the students' could determine the steps to take from solving the problem through an example, (3) at the phase of choosing a strategy, the students' could find the relationship between the numbers in the matter and state the appropriate formula to solve the problem, (4) in the search for answers, the students' could perform mental calculations and estimate calculations in the form of root prediction and rounding of numbers with accuracy, and (5) at the reflecting and expanding stage, the students wrote the final result of the answer in detail and wrote the conclusions on each calculation result obtained, and corrected again the results of his work.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the mathematical connection ability of students in the high, medium, and low categories in solving math problems based on Polya's steps. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods carried out in class VII SMP PGRI 06 Malang in the 2019/2020 academic year. The subjects of this study were 22 students of which three students' categorized into high mathematical connection ability, four students categorized into medium mathematical connection ability, and fifteen students categorized into low mathematical connection ability. The results of this study show that students with the high category of mathematical connection ability were able to connect between concepts by making concept maps and solving problems well. Students with the medium group of mathematical connection ability can connect between concept, but in the episode of implementing the plan and looking back at the results of their work did not do well. Students with the low category of mathematical connection ability cannot connect between concepts, so they cannot understand the problem well and cannot plan problem-solving.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government was requiring to be able to implement a learning system by the applicable health protocol. Based on this, the government must change the learning system from face-to-face meetings to online learning. Technology that is rapidly growing can be advantaged to fully support the online learning process so that the Ministry of Religion Affairs makes an innovation, namely e-learning madrasah media for simplifying the online learning process for all madrasah in Indonesia. This study aims to make readers know the level of effectiveness of online learning using madrasah e-learning to optimize the student understanding of mathematics. This study used a survey method that was conducted online with a quantitative descriptive research type. The results are that online mathematics learning activities using e-learning madrasah are quite efficient, considering that there are still constraints on the ownership of students' equipment and inadequate internet networks, and students are not maximal in absorbing the material provided. However, the advantages we found were the full support provided by the school, teachers, and parents for ongoing learning. Also, learning mathematics using madrasah e-learning is efficient and flexible so that students can carry out learning well.

Abstract

HOTS is the ability to combine and develop newly acquired information and prior knowledge to solve non-routine problems. HOTS refers to the revised Bloom's Taxonomy which consists of analyzing, evaluating, and creating. However, this study was only analyzing (C4) and evaluating (C5). This study aimed to describe the HOTS profile of students in solving geometry problems. This type of research was descriptive qualitative research with the subject consisting of two students with high learning ability, each of whom was selected to represent two different Euclid Geometry classes. Data collection consisted of solving HOTS problems and unstructured interviews. The results showed that the two subjects had not been able to achieve high order thinking ability indicators. Students' higher-order thinking skills still need to be improved. Mathematics learning should designing considering the critical and creative thinking aspects to develop students' HOTS learning should be designed by considering critical and creative thinking aspects to develop students' HOTS.
